This is how to replace a standard Pentair Pool Light Bulb. I used an LED light bulb to save electricity and offer different color options. You do not need to drain your pool to change your light bulb. Make sure you disconnect all electrical elements and please shut off your power (Breaker) If you are unsure of what you are doing, please contact an electrician or your local pool service company.

Thank you for the video. Love the step by step. I did my bulb, but I didn't do color changing but got the same brand you recommended, just plain white. It works great. For my hot tub, it uses the tiny halogen Pentair 120v 100. My local light company, Xpress Lighting of Texas, in Spring, hooked me up with a 5000k LED E11. Wow. Stunning. Both bulbs, less than $100. I mentioned this in our neighbor NextDoor, and a pool company guy tried to rip my head off. Said LED's are dangerous. Could explode. He said we need to rewire the entire fixture and install a proper LED assembly. I just shut up and didn't feed the troll. As I understood it the LED's burn at least half cooler than the previous bulbs. But whatever. Anyway, thanks for your tips. You saved us tons of money.

I saw that when you tighten metal ring around fixture, you tightened it very tight. I never really realized how tight it should be. I’ll be changing out a led later this month because water got into fixture. I figure I need to tighten ring as much as I saw you tighten it. Thanks !

Glad I watched this, I thought I had to take a swim. Getting rid of an expensive multi color changing LED that i bought for the cobalt blue but that color kicked the bucket in about a year so I have a blue LED replacement because I do not like red, orange green etc. Hoping the new one is bright cobalt blue as advertised.

The blue is nice. I actually really like the red though. The Red doesn't attract the bugs. if I leave the bright white light on june bugs dive bomb the pool. lol

2 items of some importance: 1st you need a clean rag to clean the edge of the lens b4 gasket replacement and the metal housing b4 lens w/gasket placement. Many times older assemblies have broken down seals so all surfaces need a thorough cleaning b4 assm.. Also, if assembly has water in it, BREAKER OFF 1st, important to dry, especially socket and leave exposed to sun for several hours prior to assembly. Typically, breaker will not trip with water in unit until water contacts socket area. You should add a note about cleaning and water issues. Some of your viewers will develop leaks in time. This video does not cover the other common light assembly with tabs instead of ring, much more care needed.

It’s a little tougher when the pool builder glues to old power line in the duct. That said, once complete, the old cord makes a dandy extension cord. Two new ends and when, green reuse. LOL

There should be a breaker for the pool lights. Usually in the panel that also runs the pool pump. That’s what I used. Finding the model number is a good question. Without removing the light, I would probably easier the diameter and then check pictures online and compare. The model number may be on the light somewhere. I’m not sure.

Good video. Is there a seal at the back of the light housing where the wire goes in & conduit is connected? i am getting some water in my conduit. Could it possibly be the lens gasket? Thanks a lot.

If you are getting water inside your light housing, I would start with replacing the gasket on the lens. Then you can hold it underwater and see if any air bubbles are escaping. This pool has a vinyl liner. I’ve never had a pebble Tec pool. They look really nice! I can’t speak for the longevity of the product though.

I got my light fixture out without having to drain my pool down, thanks to using an impact screw driver, hand driven of course. However, I can't get a light bulb to light up when I turn the switch on. I used a voltage meter to see if I was getting current at the bulb holder, and all I could get for a reading is 12 volts. Unfortunately I have already thrown away the old bulb, but it looked like a regular spot light bulb. I don't want to spend a lot of money buying a 12 volt bulb if it isn't really a 12 volt fixture. Any suggestions?

I have only ever dealt with the 120. But I think they do come in 12v options. The 12v LED bulbs seem to be about the same price as the 120s. There is usually a sticker on the fixture or the cord. However they can come off in the water so that may not be around anymore. If there isn’t anything written on the fixture and you are reading 12v when you turn the switch on, I would probably get the 12v bulb and try it. I’m sorry. I know that probably wasn’t very helpful.

If the light fixture was installed properly than it should ground itself out and trip the breaker off if it gets water in it. So it shouldn’t harm anyone.

If you have silicone grease, it’s a good idea. I’ve done it without and it didn’t have a problem. But adding some in there is not a bad idea.

There can be several causes. That will happen if the light gets water in it. So I would check that. It could also happen if there is an issue with the wire. But that is probably less common.

Unfortunately, if the light wasn’t installed properly and the cord doesn’t reach out of the water, then you will have to drain the pool down far enough to be able to open it up above the water level.

If the led lights are exposed like the one in the video, use latex gloves to handle the light. Oil from your fingers can cause premature failure of the LED LIGHTS.

If you are referring to the brightness of the light. These LEDs are pretty bright. But they are also dimmable. Here is a review I did of this bulb. That’s a good question. If it’s a Pentair light like in the video, then it’s likely the same. Typically spas can be drained and refilled easily though. So they may not have left enough cord and just expected it to be drained. My spa had small LED lights that are not like this one in the video. I’ve never had to replace one. So I don’t know how to do those.

The lens gasket should keep water out of where the light bulb is. And there isn’t a reason to silicone them to the wall. There is suppose to be water behind it. You may have a different style of light however.

All of them that I have ever had use the single screw to hold them in. So I’m not sure. If that isn’t there I would try twisting the whole thing counter clockwise. But I honestly don’t know for sure.

It is probably a good idea to have something holding the bottom in place. The screw does most of the work, but if somebody accidentally kicks the light or something, it could break the screw too. If you think you can get it stuck back on there, I would try.

It’s probably ok. Let it dry out really good. Then put it back together. You can use some vaseline or plumbing silicone grease to help get a seal.

@@RoscoReviews I did end up using plumbers grease this time but I think what helped most was u explaining lining up the writing on the bulb and ring….made it easier to put clamp ring on….i dunked it and it’s water tight, my light is lower than yours so i have a 25lb weight to tie off to my belt and goggles….so now for the hard part that last screw

The proper thing to do would probably be to re tap the hole (probably to the next size up) then use a slightly larger screw. But that would probably be tricky without draining the pool. You could perhaps wrap something around the screw (like Teflon tape) to make it just slightly fatter then try to screw it in again.

Yeah. Unfortunately I think most of them are made in China. I got 3 seasons out of my last one. So I didn’t think that was too bad. It’s a standard base bulb. So I would think you could use any exterior LED flood light. You can probably find some of those made by GE or something. But they probably won’t be the color changing ones.

If it’s the same style light as in the video, but there isn’t enough cord to pull it out of the water, then I may not have been installed properly. If that is the case, then unfortunately, the only way to change the bulb will be to drain the pool down to where it’s below the light. Replace the bulb and fill the pool back up.

I can't get the screw to unscrew. I think it has rusted, like maybe pool guy didn't use ss screw. Any suggestions. Will I have to break the ring around the light?

If you cant get the screw out, I would probably drill the head off the screw before I would break the ring. The only problem is, you would have to drain the pool far enough to get to the screw. The ring is held on all the way around from the back. If you try to break the ring you may end up breaking the glass. I think I would drain the pool down to where I could drill the head of the screw. Then remove the light, then use vice grips or something to get ahold of what’s left of the screw to try to get it out. If it breaks off you might have to drill the rest of it out too.

I got 3 years out of my first one. So I didn’t think that was too bad. But, I’m sure it matters how much you turn it on and off. I think turning them on and off a lot burns the boards out in the led lights.
