In this video we'll show you how to replace an old standard bulb with a new LED color changing bulb, LEDs are a great way to save money in the long run. Replacing a 500-watt bulb with a 45-watt bulb with similar beam coverage and ability to change colors and lights shows. For most homeowners, it's a no-brainer. The bulb we'll be using is the Color Splash 3G. Not all standard incandescent pool lights have an LED replacement so do your research or give us a call to make sure you get the right part.
Once the light is removed from the pool we will need to access the bulb. Each light is different when opening it. The model we're using is the Pentair Amerilite which has a uni tension clamp to secure the face rim. Remove this locking bolt and set it to the side. The clamp is then able to be removed from the
rim brackets one at a time.
Now onto the rim. Separate it from the lens gasket; this may take some strength or use of a tool to gently pry the two pieces apart. The pressure from the clamp and grime from the pool creates a tight seal over the years.
Roll the gasket over the edge of the lens and fixture. Be sure not to drop the lens while completing this step. Set the lens to the side. Have the new lens gasket ready for install after we put in the new bulb.
Look over your fixture's inner casing for any corrosion or burn marks. This is a sign that a bulb will not fix your issue. If your fixture is compromised the new bulb will fail prematurely. The reason for the new lens gasket is to ensure a tight seal. If installed correctly it should prevent any future leaks.
The light may have been recently used so, cover the bulb with a towel while unscrewing it from the fixture. And install the new bulb. This LED screws in just like the original.
To put the fixture back together we just reverse how we take it apart. The lens should be placed to cover the fixture. Using the new lens gasket Roll it over the edge of the lens and fixture. If your gasket is curved on one side, use the flat side of the gasket on the side with the lens. Re-apply the face-rim and unitension clamp.

In the short space of time (about 3 years), I am onto my 2nd LED Pool Light. The first was radio-controlled, with all of the features of color-change. The first LED Light was impressive when first installed. Then, after just two years, I noticed that the Pool Light was "flickering" and also several 'dark' spots on the Lens, where LED's had failed to light up. I strongly suspected that water had entered the LED Light Unit (even though this Unit was potted with resin). I was wrong about this. Upon inspection, the old LED Pool Light was dry inside. So - why had it failed? During manufacture, the LED's and Electronics are potted in resin. However, the LED Pool Lamp (when turned on) becomes hot inside. The heating and cooling causes some slight distortion of the potted LED's - when set into the thermoplasic resin. If I slightly 'flex' the potted LED Light Unit, the LED's all work!! My conclusion to all of this, is that some change takes place in the potting of the LED modules between manufacture - and end-use. It is this slight distortion of the Potting Resin (due to heat) that causes many failures in this type of Pool Light. Finally, the Potting Resin is very poor at heat dissipation, a primary cause of Potting Resin Distortion leading to premature failure of the LED Light Unit. All of the LED Pool Light Manufacturers need to focus upon the heat dissipation from these types of Pool Lights. Basically, the higher the Wattage of your LED Pool Light, where more internal heat is generated, the worse this situation becomes.

It's a lot more difficult when you are working on your knees in 100+ degree temperatures and you have sweat running into your eyes and the deck is scorching hot and rough. Good video though. Thanks!

Question: How many watt would you recommend for a glass pool to slightly avoid the light from going pass the glass?

I put in a $27.00 led color changing bulb from Menards(for indoor use only) and its working great. sealed the reomote in a food saver bag to keep water out cause you have to be right infront of light for it to work. I leave it on all the time. Plugged it into my killawatt and on color changing mode it only uses around 3 watts. Sweet:)

so I have a Pac Fab Hatteras Pool Light with a 500 watts bulb, can I just replace it for a LED light then? Any specification on a LED light that matches the 500 watts that came with fixture? I would like to have a light with remote or a way to select colors, thanks AQ

The PacFab Hatteras (www.inyopools.com/pool_parts_pac_fab_hatteras_pool_light.aspx) uses a standard R-40 bulb, so most replacement LED bulbs would fit the socket. The main issue would be the shape of the housing. Standard ColorSplash Bulbs (www.inyopools.com/productlisting/lights_jjelectronics.aspx) are "bulbous" on the back, but the Hatteras appear on the narrow side. Review SwimQuip replacement LED pool light bulb (www.inyopools.com/Products/44400015084676.htm) dimensions to determine if it will fit. Regarding wattage, there are no 500-watt equivalent options available. Most color-changing lights brightest color (white) tops out at about 300-400 watts equivalent brightness; the other lights appear dimmer because they do not travel as far in water.

When you take it apart , use magic lube around the gasket, it will seal it tight, they should have it at your local pool store.

I used the lube and I am still getting water in my housing and it’s tripping the breaker. I just bought this house and frustrated that I can’t use the light at night in AZ. I am going to have to call a repair shop now. Ugh...

Is there a remote for this light? How does it change colors, can you keep it on one color?
@Inyopools

If you want an LED bulb that is controlled with a remote, take a look at our Pureline Pure Colors: (www2.inyopools.com/ProductListing/pureline-pure-colors-led-pool-light-fixtures.aspx) The LED in the video is controlled by a light switch. You would flick the switch several times to cycle through the solid colors and lights shows.
