I have to be honest, I'm not entirely sure how some people can hate Rose. She did everything she could in this episode to save the universe in the Doctor's place. More than that, she's always tried to help - she showed the world that even the most ordinary girl with the most mundane life can save the universe...

I don't hate Rose, but she got kind of annoying in Series 2 IMHO, and I do feel she's rather overrated. She definitely doesn't make my top 5 ( 1. Donna, 2. Leela, 3. The Brigadier- yes he counts- 4. Ace and 5. Tie between Romana and Clara, mainly as the different versions of these two make them difficult to judge). Then again neither does the legendary Sarah Jane, so maybe it's just an indication of how many great characters there are in Doctor Who. 😃
@Eldariel157 жыл бұрын
I don't hate Rose, but she is one of my least favourite companions. I liked her in season 1 but in season 2 it honestly felt like a teenage love story to me, it just annoyed me, she seemed so immature there at times (especially in the werewolf episode if I'd have been the queen I'd have banished them too). I know there's lots of people who enoyed it but I just didn't *shrugs* I loved Martha because of her intelligence, and Donna because she takes no shit and Jack because.... too many reasons. But Rose especially with 10 just didn't work for me
@TheSkully3437 жыл бұрын
I think fans were split about what Rose became. In Series 1 she and the Ninth Doctor went around like best buds flying around the universe and having a Fantastic time serving her role as the companion just as anybody would've in the classic series. In Series 2 whatever romantic undertones RTD might have hidden in the Eccleston Era became full blown overtones in Tennant's Era (particularly during Tooth and Claw and The Impossible Planet) leading to long time fans disliking the idea of The Doctor having a love interest (Yet surprised at the fact that he has a Granddaughter in Susan and by extension a Wife and Child) To most people the one common rule established (and humorously quoted by John Nathan Turner back in the 80s is) "No hanky panky in the TARDIS" which is why most people grew up with the conception that The Doctor should have no romantic ties to anybody, especially not a human who he will outlive for eons after she dies. And Rose being the companion that RTD Chose to romanticise The Doctor lead to a massive split between the fans who came in 2005 vs Fans who've been watching since the 60s, 70s and 80s. Discounting whatever meaningless life she lead before she met The Doctor, I tend to disagree with the notion that Rose was as selfish as many claim considering that Rose could've been easily substituted for anybody else on Earth and I think most people would act as she did in those circumstances regardless of connections (A Boyfriend in 'Rickey' Her mother Jackie, wasting her life eating chips, watching telly and going to bed) And lets be honest here if you saw The Doctor turn up, all smiles and leather jackets, offering you a chance to travel through space and time I sincerely doubt you would easily pass that up if you could suddenly be lifted out of your shiftless, boring life. What I think some older fans also had trouble getting to terms with was how RTD's soap opera influence meant that The Doctor wouldn't move on as easily from companions as he did in the Classic Series. To use an apt comparison, Adric. He died in Earthshock and immediately after in Time Flight he went with the mentality of. "Adric's dead? Oh dear... Ah well, must dash!" Whereas Ten brooded (for understandable reasons considering that he was still healing from the Time War) and to have that which comforted him ripped away would clearly leave some mental scars leading to Martha's unfortunate situation of being "The Rebound" But despite Ten's mistreatment of Martha it was because of that which he learned to no longer contrast everyone he came across to Rose and as such became accepting of Donna and eventually did recognise Martha in her own right rather than look at her as "Not Rose" By the time of Series 4 with the constant hints of Rose returning I think this was where their hatred came to boiling point because of how it showcased that Tennant's era was entirely defined by Rose rather than Classic Who's tendency to move on once a Companion either died or said "Fuck this I'm leaving" And once the whole romantic sub-plot was dealt with by leaving her on Pete's world with the Meta-Crisis Doctor I think fans were sick to death of her hogging so much attention. For me Rose is far from the worst companion I've ever seen (That honor goes to Turlough) and while not exactly my favourite (Tegan Jovanka gets that honor) Rose is still pretty cool as far as being THE companion that managed to kick the show back in gear in 2005.

I always interpreted the scene differently, losing Rose may have had a huge impact on the Doctor, but I don't believe he would have gone suicidal because of it, he has lost a lot of companions in the past. I always believed the reason he never made it out in time was because he hated himself, more specifically he hated what he has just done, essentially killing a bunch of innocent children who were not responsible for the racnoss queen's actions, essentially in that one scene he commits genocide against a species and this causes him to have a severe PTSD episode about when he killed the Time Lords and the Daleks. Donna was the one to bring him back to reality just in time to escape.

It not only speaks volumes about how much she truly loved him, but about how determined she was to save the Universe. It WAS epic. And he was so proud he giggled like a schoolboy in love. Adorable.

All for the cost of having to wear a cellphone-sized gadget on her waist for the rest of her life and maybe a little implant in her brain, storing the excess of her intellectual and allowing for wireless communication between the two? Absolutely she would. As for Gallifrey, guess who’s got the flagship piece of Gallifrey technology _and_ all of their knowledge in the size of a telephone box, and much of their technological education in their mind as well, as evidenced by the 13th Doctor’s ability to manufacture sonic devices + a time-spatial teleporter in an earthen garage.

She needed the Doctor and the Doctor needed her. I don’t want none of this Amy and Clara sub theories and ‘part of something bigger’ bullshit. When Clara became a Dalek I gave up on Doctor who. They’ve completely lost sight of what makes Doctor Who so special. Donna and Martha were also great in their own ways. Martha was to show what sets apart Rose from any other random human. It emphasises the Doctors relationship with her and even brought out the negatives of the Doctor and his selfishness. Furthermore, Donna became the friend that helped him who just wanted a laugh. God I miss proper Doctor Who.

While I'm not a big Rose fan, I have to admit, that Rose actually helped to advance Donna's character in this episode. Rose actually somewhat matured for series four though, I just felt it was too little too late to salvage her overall character for me

0:57 Poor Jack, lol. Of all the homeworlds to get stuck on, it's the one with the species that doesn't dance.

I think Turn Left is one of my top most fave Doctor Who episodes, just because of the emotions of everything - because you see a world where things could have gone so wrong if the Doctor hadn't been around, if Donna hadn't been around to stop him. I love Donna Noble, and I love Rose in this moment encouraging Donna.

Much love for ALL of the (modern) Doctors companions. But there IS something about Rose and Donna. This is one of my fave scenes from Season 4. And 4 was AWESOME!!!
