Your gloves look like my husband’s welding gloves. No matter what precautions I take when pruning my roses I always look like I’ve been fighting with a cat afterwards. 😂🤣

Great beginner rose pruning/fertilizing lesson. One other pointer is cleaning your pruners between bushes. I carry around a spray bottle with sanitizer and a towel. Any more, if I pick up my pruners, I pick up my spray bottle. Fraser Valley Rose youtube channel is another great resource for roses. I learned how to prune my standard rose from him. I have one climber and last fall I got a Proven Winners rose to train to climb on a trellis in a pot. So I'm a newbie too. Thanks for the close ups and sacrificing your arms for the cause!!

You did a great job explaining how to prune roses and the difference between pruning for cut flowers versus for a garden show. I tend to prune for a garden show. I love the idea of cut flowers but I can't seem to cut the roses off the plant when it is in full bloom. I enjoy walking around my garden and enjoying the display. I find that roses are more forgiving than we give them credit for. I buy roses that are known to be hardy they bloom even if I prune incorrectly or forget to fertilize at the proper time.

Thanks for this video! Do you know how to go getting rid of ant infestation in containers. I have a container garden and in one I have rose that has an ant hill. I’ve tried diatomaceous earth but had no luck with it. Any ideas of how to get rid of them would be helpful. Thanks!

You can water your pot with a mix of water and dish soap or you can sprinkle a mix of baking soda and powdered sugar on the soil.

i live in zone 7b ; NYC i have two in pots, they give beautiful flowers, but they are a hassle and by hassle i mean they are bred to give beautiful flowers but are extremely lanky and weird growing canes as opposed to a heirloom rose shrub - and honestly I'd prefer a fragrant rose over a double knockout now that i've had both in my garden @@shesamadgardener

Also I share this just to take the word finicky away from roses. When I moved to my prior house it had over 90 (yes 90) roses! I removed a lot but the ones left (about 30) I didn’t give tons of extra care. And let me tell you I really think of roses as almost as vigorous as weeds now bc many of those jolly roses I couldn’t get rid of! they kept growing back from deep roots. lol.
