Thanks for visiting. You came just a week before the grand reopening of the newly renovated rose garden. All our labels are back out now, but here are some quick answers to your questions: 3:41 Jerusalem sage (Phlomis tuberosa); 3:59 Pat Austin rose; 4:44 Dortmund rose; 5:43 Peggy Martin rose; 6:27 Laguna rose;12:51 Rosy dipelta (Dipelta floribunda) an unusual shrubby member of the honeysuckle family. This specimen is grown from seed wild-collected from its native China. The papery bracts persist long after the flowers fade and age from pink to bronze in late summer. An interesting and tough shrub that isn't used nearly enough in the landscape.

What an incredible garden tour from start to finish! Thank you for sharing it with us. I am one who is passionate about roses. I started out 16 years ago designing a garden from a plot of 70 x 70 feet bare ground (except for weeds) here in California Zone 8b and had 64 roses but am now down to 39. I was physically disabled from 2019 until the end of 2021 from major injuries and resulting surgeries, so my poor non gardener husband did the best he could on maintenance. But sadly, about 15 had to be removed in the last couple of years because they were beyond saving. I also grow a lot of tall bearded iris and other perennials and am adding more this year now that I am healthy again. I won't be replacing any of the lost roses, because I am not getting any younger and 39 are more than enough to take care of, but I will never lose my love for this beautiful flower.

I have been putting rose clippings on my planters for years. The squirrels in my garden are ruthless so I had to out-squirrel the squirrels. Lol. Love roses and this tour was lovely. Wish I was there to inhale. 💚🇨🇦. My moms name was Rose and my middle name is rose. Guess that’s why I love roses. 🌹

I used to have a very large formal rose garden but , when I moved, the deer at my new home made that impossible. Now I try to keep a few going. I hope to move again one day to a place where my plants don’t become deer food but instead are allowed to live again. 😀

I would guess the orange rose @3:59 is one of David Austin's ( Lady Emma Hamilton perhaps?). Austin specializes in scent paired with old rose form, although the glossy leaves point to more modern parentage. I really enjoy the garden 'furniture' (urns & such) used a focal points & listening to the fountains. My garden is of antique, collected (cemetery & homestead) & found roses. I grow them from collected slips & try to identify when blooming. A fabulous book to read on collecting old roses is In Seach Of Lost Roses by Thomas Christopher! The ferns with water features are spectacular! Could that bush @12:56 be a beauty bush (Kolkwitzia)?

The shrub with papery flowers might be some kind of bougainvillea. It is very popular in southern China as a specimen plant. The shrub form of bougainvillea is often used in city landscape - for example, a low screen between the bike lanes and car lanes. It also has vine and tree forms and Many different colors. People grow the vine form on their balcony into a screen for privacy and sun block. And the tree form is often grown into a lollipop shape. It takes pruning very well so the shrub form can be trained as bonsai. In cities like Hong Kong you can see this plant everywhere.
