Rose Garden Tour May | David Austin Roses | Kordes Roses

An odd year weather wise. Some could say freak. In my garden at least the continental roses holding back just a little bit.
But I have zero doubt they are just biding there time, reserving there energy and now the weather is warming, they are just starting to shine :)

Ah I love your garden tours ! You have so many different roses, It helped me get a better idea of some roses, how they develop etc. I have some DA roses in common with you; Desdemona (bare root from this winter) is impressive, they started to bloom early and they just never stop, and the hues on it are breathtaking. But I do adore my Boscobel that I have since last year !

I always love your tours Jay Jay and your roses are looking a damn sight better than mine as they took a battering from the high winds and torrential rain that we've had over the last two days. I've just been out to take off all the smashed blooms. Thankfully there's still lots of buds to come. I'm so pleased that your netting has kept the rabbits off your lovely roses but there's always one that gets the better of you .He looks like he doesn't give a damn. Your garden looks fab and look at Seanie on his sunlounger making the most of the weather.

Greetings from Ireland, Beautiful roses. We have one peony rose in our garden no thorns great we get along. My mother is eighty seven and she has lots of the thorny fuppers around her flower beds. I call down every weekend to look after her flower beds, I like gardening naked oh sorry I meant I don't wear gloves never have and never will. There have been times when I'm weeding around them I thought Id end up in A&E

Well done to you for helping your mum. I’m sure she appreciates it. Yes it’s very naughty I dont wear gloves either I go bare back. NOT to be recomended as disease or infection can set in and be very serious to our health. But I like to feel the resistance of the stems. The only time I wear gloves is usually gauntlets if I’m tackling brambles etc. but that is very naughty from both of us.

Was this today? Sun and warmth? It's been miserably grey and chilly in the west. Seeing that wonderful display along the roadside I thought you'd posted a video from last summer again! You certainly have had a bad time with the rabbits, but as you say that should be coming to an end now. My Sweet Honeys are taking over the flowerbed again, and I'm sure yours will be soon too. Desdemona is great in the sun, but on a gloomy day she shines out like a beacon of cheerfulness. You've got a lot of buds there, just bursting to burst out! Next month should be spectacular!

Sorry to hear you had rubbish weather nik. Yes that was mine today. We had a lovely day. We have seen rain the past week or so but today it was nice. Yes the rabbits have much food around them now in the hedgerows and fields etc venturing into gardens is risky for them. :) cheers nik

Paul's Himalayan Musk, I had it growing in my hedge and it was an absolute thug. I cut it to the ground hoping it would die but it sent up 20 massive new shoots. Mine also gets black spot, but hopefully no more as I intend to put an end to it, eventually. It's roots probably go down to Australia 😅. Another great video, interesting stuff, thank you.

Hi Jay Jay that was wonderful, so much colour and sunshine, thanks. It's been grey drizzle here all day today I had to put the heating on such a contrast to what I've just watched, gorgeous Seanie sunbathing and lovely Donna saying hi in shorts and I'm bailing my neighbours greenhouse out in wellies this morning haha. So much still to bloom too, you have done so well with your rabbit battles it's a success, that cheeky rabbit you showed he meant business ! Olivia looks fabulous, well they all do really Boscobel stunning and Desdemona so pretty. Jasmina looks amazing this year don't make me add it to my list ;) Thanks for showing GG, she has grown. Sweet Honey will come good it looked to be getting going now, I think that rose is very strong. The black spot is an issue again this year in the UK, it was last year too, so much rain what can you do. I never realize that all my Kordes roses are the latest to start until today 😂yes! It’s true! Half of my garden roses are in blossom now but Kordes friends are still forming buds. Hi there. Yes the mesh laid flat and folded or layered just having it an inch or two above the soil it worked well for me. But remember it’s a deterrent. They don’t like walking on it but if they are that hungry they will do anything including eating anything that’s been sprayed with stuff they dislike. But this mesh worked for me. Off putting enough for them to look elsewhere. Thanks for the kind words.

Ok will be careful, I note you had some burn on the leaves, I have only just started, I will in light of your experience dilute it further. I seem to recall another product that is similar that has a ratio that is less in dilution. I think it was on "mycuterosegarden"

My roses in south England look amazing and I’ve the best tan already . Been gardening daily . I’m gonna prune Sweden as she’s leggy . Dannuhue has 20 roses it looks stunning. It’s only a year in the ground . Desdemona also is stunning, Your roses look great 😊, black spot is inevitable I find .

Oh my word, that Olivia Rose is insane! I think most of your roses look great considering the rabbit banditos & the cold snap. We had a "hot snap" which confused everyone & then rain, rain, rain for weeks, not heavy, just wet (as rain often is, duh!). But now I think all rain is past & it is 60's/70's & my roses are getting going. Angel Face & Distant Drums were first, sorry your Distant Drums didn't bush out, but mine is the same---one or 2 canes w/spectacular flowers that last forever. My 3 Cadfael's that I got in April from David Austin are leafed out & bushy with a few buds, looking happy, yours is probabking about having been moved & I'm sure he will get with the program---not usually an early bloomer. And just today, holy cow, one monster bloom on James Galway!! Can't wait to get him up & climbing. Your Wollerton & Desdemonas are super lovely---I have Wollerton, just got in April. Do you have a rose called Arctic Blue? Mercy me, it likes cold weather, almost bloomed into December & is very tall right now & bloomed early. So wonderful to see your garden & hear your voice---someone needs to name a rose "Lovely Viewer" in your honor. Happy gardening!

I’m thinking what other roses are reacting and I dont think any DA are, possibly Rosemary. But it does appear to be just a few of the continental roses with that recomended mix.

Congratulations to your Boscobel. It’s looking fantastic! Much better than mine. I also have Madame Anisette. This rose is one of the strongest I ve ever seen. You will have much joy with it I think. Jasmina is a lovely climber, but in my garden it doesn’t repeat blooming. It has one great flush and I don’t do dead heading her this year. Thanks for this video, I enjoyed it very much. Hi Ruth and thank you. All credit to the roses. Yes I regret planting my Madame Anisette there I should have potted her to see how she got on. Jasmina I have two flushes but only 2 flushes. Separated by maybe 2 months but last 2 seasons I got 2 good flushes even when she was small. Hopefully you will get 2 this year.

Hi Jay lovely to see you back. Your roses are beautiful. One thing I noticed with experimenting is that cutting back hard has produced a lot more basal breaks and a more healthier plant overall. The ones I haven’t pruned as much have suffered the worst from blackspot. I do feed often which is something I probably haven’t done as much before and have found nice healthy new growth. I don’t use uncle toms but I find every two weeks with a mixture of chempak and liquid seaweed.

Boscobel I’d have to agree Peter. Even today with heat they are holding well for a David Austin. Yeah uncle toms I like it alot but keep an eye on the roses individually. I will probably half the stated dosage on all roses. See how that goes but I know most take the stated dosage.

Hi there. I wish I had octopus cane with masses of flower. :) I think summer romance can do this I’ve seen it before on first flush. It flowers early for a kordes rose, but If conditions haven’t been great it’s a little weak but it flowers anyway. Second flush, when things are warmer will be much better and more flowers I’m sure.

What details insite of your roses Jay. Plenty to learn from watching your videos. My Olivia is pretty established but no where as tall as yours ( must be an Asian version of Olivia) . Kordes seems to be slower to flower compare to other Da’s. Lovey yourl latest garden tour Jay but unfortunately I’m sure most of us want see more!!!

Hi Ken. I did prune my Olivia’s a little taller but they seem to handle it well enough. In strong heat they are gonna sag some regardless but I think I got away with it. If anything I pruned too narrow and I can remember that bloody cut. One snip that’s all it was. But we learn. The kordes will get into gear we know it. They are just warming up. Terrible footage of my summer romance, them flowers well over a week old and battered with wind and rain. Now your footage you gotta show us what they should look like :) cheers mate

Hi David and thank you. The Roald Dahl I would speak to DA or better still one of the big KZbinrs Jason from Fraser valley or gardener Ben. My Roald Dahl I’m leaving it to flower, I’m pretty certain 2nd flush from Roald Dahl will be a good one. As will for instance my summer romance. However come winter I am going to extract Roald from its pot and replace all soil with fresh. I’m glad to hear your garden is doing wel. Always nice when people comment or take photos. That’s lovely to hear. ;)

Yay pottager the sweet honey is performing I was hoping it would. Blackspot, In your lovely garden I wouldn’t overly worry about black spot. Your garden has so much character to carry it. And that’s me being honest. You could deleaf it strip it back bare and new foilage will come through in 2 or 3 weeks. Then keep an eye on it maybe spray it with uncle toms fortnightly or some say neem oil. But honestly in your garden with all those plants, nooks and crannies I wouldn’t worry. :)

But whatever you do don’t stress over it, your garden has the character to carry it. My garden is full of roses and when it’s full of blackspot it shows like a brick going through a window. :)

Your garden is looking fantastic and the roses are too! Did you nearly fall over? 😂😂. I think i confused you about distant drums. I was disappointed that id ordered it, before i had actually received it as i knew some people including you were having problems with it, so i regretted buying it. It has come to me very healthy, but i can just see tiny amounts of mildew on the edges of a few leaves and i thinking over time this may not be a good rose as it was never meant for our climate. Ck jones also advises rose clear in their leaflet which is something im not willing to use, so I guess Time will tell but in all honesty yours looks terrible and id be so tempted to get in touch with ck jones. I should be visiting david austin gardens this weekend or next with my son as its our yearly trip out now hahaha and i will definitely be looking for some of the roses that are in your garden. Youre such a bad influence on my bank balance! Looking forward to the next video as always

Hi Davena yes I knew you weren’t happy but I thought yours had arrived bad. As you see mine is not in good shape. It could well be this rose 🌹isnt suitable for U.K. climate. At the moment the omens aren’t looking good especially for people who don’t spray. We shouldn’t have to. The roses I’ve got from ck in the past have always been, and gone onto be very good. This one the jury is out. It’s not in good shape as you can see. But I do want to persevere with it and without rose clear which I won’t use. I will give it time to establish more as the weather warms and see where we are at. Also let’s see how winter deals with it. If mine fails or more likely to fail I will get in touch with ck. at the moment it’s hanging on for dear life. But I’m gonna give mine the summer at least to see how it gets on. Yes I almost feel over. :)

Jay Jay all yours roses look very healthy and strong start to this season, despite rabbits issue. My DA roses are at same stage as yours along the front lane. This is also true for my Jasmina, Wollerton old Hall and timeless purple rose. I decided not to go for ' distant drums ' as my PCDM is doing very well now in blooms. Heard about uncle Tom but never used on my roses, as they are healthy with other feeds. Look forward to seeing more of your garden videos in near future. 👍

Hi and sorry for delay. That’s not an easy question. This year particularly I pruned heavy in the middle. I got rid to help the rose breath. All my roses got muched and fed. Fortnightly I am using a foiler spray. And (alternate) fortnightly I am using comfrey tea to water. At present I am certain this has helped some. The amount of blackspot so far has been very small indeed with just the odd leaf being plucked. This is inportant. Keep ontop of it. I have a couple of very large roses infested with blackspot, they shed leaves all over the garden. I try and clear this up best I can. Cheers

First flush over, now she is putting up new flower buds on new growth. 5:56 At the time that I decided on Eustacia Vye,I was unaware of the golden glow in the blossom centers. I can not recall ever seing a rose with such a golden glow in the center, quite an undestated elegance. 7:22 Behaving like a hybrid tea, one bud is all that you get, or 3 if the tea has enough floribunda ancestry! 7:45 Yes, I was dong that with mesh until a herd of cats moved in here they terrorized and devoured all of the rodents that were destroying various plants. I do NOT like cats, but I do appreciate their anti rodent proclivities! @@Jay_Jay Always good to hear from you. My first Earth Angel bloom opened today. No rose does cabbage form better than earth Angel by Kordes. When I got my first antique rose plants 30 years ago I was trying to recreate rose scenes from my very youngest years, scenes that had sunk deep into my subconscious of old roses that I saw at old hoses during mid 1960s. I had no premeditated plan, just collecting what accorded with those far distant memories. At that time, I had no idea of the fascination of roses. For me, only old style roses. Modern roses , hybrid teas look too synthetic, old roses, especially cabbage roses evoke genteel memories of the 1890s.

Your roses are looking amazing - better than some of mine I'm afraid. ( bunny damage again) Just to let you know, I have several sweet parfume de provence/ the Anniversary rose roses. This rose, although lovely, will grow thick stems & get very big, very fast. Mine are 4-5 ft. I fear for your boscobel/ desdemona/ & Olivia roses as they will most certainly suffer if you leave this rose planted there. The other alternative would be to cut it right to the ground every Spring. It is a monster 😳🌹🌹🌹

Wow thank you. Whereabouts in the world are you? It’s advertised in this country on several websites saying it grows to 3 ft x 2ft! And it’s the 2ft in particular I was hoping for. I had it potted last year and it didn’t fly. But I can’t afford to have…. Another, rose outgrow that particular spot.

I'm in Lincolnshire. As soon as I saw SPDP nestled amongst your other more 'refined' David Austin roses alarm bells rang & I thought I ought to warn you. I believe spdp is a HT rose, so could be cut right back to 3-4" stems in the spring, otherwise, If it was my garden I would definatly move her as I have never known a rose get so big & thick so fast. As you know, I have over 200 roses & of all my roses this one is the strongest grower. The plus side is she has the most amazing perfume, but the opening buds tend to rot & go brown in wet weather. Oh well, I suppose we can't have it all 😊🌹

Wow Jay jay,Boscobel looks incredible 😍😍😍Now I saw that just on the Eustachia Rose next to the open Flower…what is the critter cutting and eating the Rose Buds in half😮 my poor CPM has almost non left , they got razored in one night…😢😢😢 To get multiple Buds I really have to feed them regularly with a liquid feed once a week, but I think the cold spells in April didn’t help also…Love your Brother Caedfel mine is covered in mildew because of the rain 🙈🙈🙈

I'm truly touched! 😍 Your Westerland rose appears to be thriving, and the flowers are sumptuously beautiful. On the screen, the colour appears to be reddish orange but that may just be the way it appears on the screen. Mine is much more orange/yellow with a touch of pink. Likewise, your Mme Alfred Carriere is so pretty. David Austin always made the point that Mme Alfred, although a very fine rose, has flowers that he described as less "well-formed' than many other roses. The reasons I love it is because it is so healthy, so vigorous and it thrives in the shade. I treat it almost as a rambler and let it scramble, unrestrained, through trees. Perhaps climbing Iceberg might be an alternative choice for growing in your pretty pot up that beautiful brick wall. Iceberg is an extremely prolific flowerer. Finally, the outlook from your house is idyllically beautiful 😍. To look out on those fields with sheep and cattle grazing must be blissful. And the roses that border the lane in the front are just superb. Rampant and unrestrained. Your own little piece of paradise. Btw, I'm in New Zealand and not Australia - and in the southernmost part of the South Island to boot. Brr..

Hi Catt. This year I have fed my roses DA rose feed. I alternate then fortnightly with comfrey tea one week. And uncle toms the following week. Next year I will probably drop the DA rose feed just for something cheaper. But the rest I will keep the same. Your roses will come and will then last longer than mine! Best of luck

Hi Linda, the hedge behind is ivy and Hawthorn. Red, yellow and orange berry varieties. NOT ideal to be in such close proximity of course. Long term I don’t know but it was a space. I have seen established rose hedges growing in same proximity as heavy ivy hedges so there is hope. Regarding the camera, seen and noted. My first videos I cringe when I see them now. Over time they are getting more stable. Perhaps I still have work to do. I will try. Thanks

Hi Jay, Learning at lot through your videos. Delivery is to the point, and you have a lovely collection. Knowing what you know, if you had to pick 6 roses today, what would they be? Conditions - will receive abt 6 hours of afternoon sun, long repeat flowering, flowers should last long, disease resistant, containerised (large pot of 60cm x 60cm), any color, should not be a climber. Your description sounds very much like my garden and I can certainly recommend Austin Roses such as Silas Marner, Desdemona, Boscobel, Pilgrim, Eustica Vye and Imogen. They are all in pots, get 5-6 hours of sun and all flower beautifully. As well as fertilising in spring and summer, I can really recommend foliar feeding once a week, it really does wonders. Thanks for your video Jay Jay - as always as interesting to watch your roses as to listen to you :)

Hi there and thanks. Wow here today a tough question. But Bliss Parfuma 7 days a week in my experience. That’s an easy question with that rose. You don’t mention fragrance so I’d say Roald Dahl and Olivia. If you want fragrant I’d suggest Eustacia but these David Austin’s the flowers don’t last long especially in heat. I’d say just 2-3 days maybe 4 days. But they do repeat very well and that’s worth considering so don’t underestimate that aspect. Summer romance would sit in that pot depending on where you are. Ticks all your boxes you mention, is fragrant but the repeat isn’t as good as the Austin’s. In this video my summer romance flowers look awful I regret showing them. but they saw muchos rain and wind battering them. One more…. Hmmmm several I’d like to say. It’s a young rose in my garden but I’m saying Bonica. Flowers a demon. Of course Bonica. Health wasn’t perfect last year but flowered very well for a tiny rose that it is.

@@shahraxit Elizabeth I do really like. A very personal favourite. I have one potted and it’s no match for the one same age in the ground. If I remember I’ll show both next video. Both get same all day sun. Lady of shallot is lovely I imagine it will grow very big. Mine is potted but in a baseless pot. I think in a year or two it will be big but it’s not the healthiest however in my garden. Penelope lovely could be a winner for you. Mine is very young but flew last summer. Its flowers lasted a decent amount of time also for an Austin. And was mainly in flower throughout summer. Mine are a little slow getting started this year but it’s only May and it’s about to flower now. Yeah very good call but remember it’s only a young rose. I can’t say it’s in the same health bracket as Olivia, Roald Dahl or Eustacia yet but a very good call.
