I have one of these, and it's hands down the best performer of all the David Austins in my garden. Mine grows about chest high, and is covered with flowers most of the season. I confess there are others I like better because of the flower form or color, but for someone who only has room for one or two roses, or is new to roses and a little nervous about having success, this is the closest to a sure thing that I've seen.

Hi David. I planted Olivia as a bareroot last summer here in my Connecticut zone 6b garden. This spring she has sent up 2 basal shoots thats at least 7 feet tall so she's not compact for me at all. Absolutely gorgeous rose though.

Wow, that's a surprise. I suppose she put all her energy into those two shoots! Just note, that if the plant was ours we would be trimming them to help them break from the bottom and become better shaped and bushy. That's what you will see, when you visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ In the nursery, we are continually trimming and manicuring our plants, so that when you plant them out they will have multiple shoots that all start growing simultaneously and providing an almost instant effect. As you will see, these places are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region (including CT), and that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, so be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons because there will be a steady stream of fresh shipments coming in weekly.

Love this rose. I added one to my garden last year and 2 more this year to make a low hedge. They were all from bare root. It seems happy in a part sun location in zone 5b/6. It is surrounded by rose marvel salvia and summer beauty allium, brunnera, Biokovo geranium and Helen von stein lambs ear.

I have three of these and the aphids have taken over. I’ve tried everything to control them, but I haven’t had any luck. It’s a shame because the flowers this variety produces are so beautiful. :(
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Ай бұрын
The trick is to try to catch the aphids early on before they get a chance to multiply. They love the young, juicy shoots on roses. So. it might be worth making a note to inspect your plants regularly next spring starting after bud break. Then as soon as you see the first sign of them, try to take care of the "pioneers" before they get multiplying. Its a lot easier (and better for the plants) to catch them early on. If you live in our our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, talk to the experts at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ and they will be able to guide you with their recommendations. Also, have you subscribed to our channel yet? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. I AGREE about the family member names. Breeders save those for their prize creations. *That is a gorgeous rose. The foliage looks so healthy too.* I will see if I can find it at the local nursery that carries your plants. I have been disappointed in the David Austin roses when it comes to fragrance. I have 4 different rambler & climbing roses that I ordered directly from their catalog. They claim they are the most fragrant ALL of their roses. But here in my 5b garden they have very faint fragrance -- even in full sun. (I have a super sensitive sense of smell too.) So I am wondering if it is a geographical issue? We can't grow fragrant tea roses here with our brutal winters. Thanks for another great informative video!
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Ай бұрын
Thanks Mary, nice to hear from you. The beauty of buying your roses at a garden center is that you can sniff them for yourself, and that's partly why when we ship them to our various centers, they will be or just coming up to the flowering stage. So, if its fragrance you are after, that is the time to decide whether you can detect (or even like) the various types of scent. Rose breeders say, they can't breed for fragrance - it "just happens" and of course everyone's sense of smell is different too, and it varies with the time of year, time of day etc. So, there's nothing like being able to take your time and smell them all for yourself. Happy sniffing!

Hi Mr David, how do u make ur roses look so healthy and bloom so beautiful. Each time after ur introduction of any David Austin roses I purchase them immediately…😅. But my roses are always with sawflies and rosé slugs and black spots…😢 ( tired of battling with diseases and bad bugs . I also try with different approach: no spray and with chemical spray…) . Could u please give me any important advice to keep them healthy. I’m in zone 7a NJ . Thanks. Always enjoyed watching and learning from you.

Thanks for reaching out. We are in Southern New Jersey (Zone 7) too, so our conditions are probably similar to yours. We really don't do a whole lot to them, except to water them well after planting, this reduces transplanting stress and we mulch them too to retain soil moisture and help keep the roots cooler etc. Then each spring we prune them, and give them a little dressing of a well-balanced slow release fertilizer. There's a video here on this channel where David shows you how to do this. Just be aware that the plants you see in the videos are 3-4 years old, they are well established and growing strongly, and it often takes a few years for this to happen. Also, it might be good to get some advice and guidance from the experts at the partnering garden centers where you are purchasing your plants - they will be able to guide you with extra tips and products that will help you get your plants going too. And of course, keep watching our videos - there's a steady stream of them planned. Finally, have you subscribed to our channel yet? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed.
