Nice hit piece, you shit on a company with decades of proven boots in the lineman industry. I don't know what you bought but I own 11 pairs, been buying them since the early 90s. The flaws in this pair of boots is unacceptable at this price. I will say that my experience with Wesco's standard Job Master boots has been much better. I have purchased two of the standard Job Masters from Wesco dealers on line in the past 6 months. Both pairs sold for well under the five hundred dollar mark. The workmanship is equal to the Nick's Moc Toe boots that I recently received after about a eight month wait. There are no issues with the quality control on the Wesco boots I received. I do not know what material they used on the counters. Why would the custom built boots have the obvious flaws? I have no idea.

I love this channel and the effort Weston puts into cutting the boots in half and being informative. It is important to see what is inside our boots, and Weston does us a great service by doing all this. However, I also find it rather odd how forgiving he can be when it comes to unacceptable flaws and cost-cutting measures. Using a celastic counter at this price is entirely unacceptable, regardless of the automated process involved in the boot’s construction. All this automation should drive the price down, not up. If Redwing can use a reconstituted leather counter at half the price, then so can Wesco. The thinner leather, cheaper materials, and sloppier craftsmanship mean that these cannot compare to White’s or Nick’s. Wesco positions and prices itself to compete with premium work boots and should be treated as such. I think Weston went way too easy on them this time.

The steel shank kept my foot from being pulverized. In '07 I ordered a custom pair but they could not get the fit right after sending them back 3 times. Just watched a video of a worker at Wesco that exposing their manufacturing faults are “uncalled for” and “untrue”. If these boots came from Wesco, manufactured in such a disappointing fashion, I don’t see how anyone from Wesco can defend their faulty product. He continued to say that Wes’ experience with customer service was false and would never have been handled that way. And that just because their top of the line boots are made with better materials, that you should ignore the proof in the video like it doesn’t exist. The Blacked Peakock I think the channel was. With comments turned off.

I have 2 Wesco highliners and 1 Boss boot and for me they are the most comfortable, most durable and well made boots among all my other boots and I have a lot. Sorry to hear about the nail and the cardboard heel stack but I don't think this is representative of their product line as a whole. Hope Wesco sees this and investigates who's responsible.
@absolutefreedom9437 Жыл бұрын
Look closer at your boots. If you have a heel stack with natural or brown edges, you'll notice a different color material in the middle, that is the compressed cardboard stuff. Sucks I know.

I’ve worn out three sets of highliners over the years. Every one has fit me like a glove. Super comfortable for climbing. They are highliners for power poles. If they where for telephone poles they would be called low liners or something else. High liners are what us lineman call lineman that always work on transmission poles aka high line.
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney Жыл бұрын
Their serious heavy-duty work boots are as good as anyone's, or at least they were. I have a pair of early '90s Wesco lineman boots, my cousin (happens to wear exactly my size) wore them for years and gave them to me since he no longer climbs poles. I use them for motorcycle boots. They still feel incredibly solid, I'll probably never wear them out and they've never been rebuilt. Not the most comfortable boot I've ever worn, but they're full-on lineman boots, of course they're not. I think most linemen and firefighters still wear Wescos, they can't be this shoddy very often.

It's kind of sad to see all of those QC issues, especially for $725 (I don't care that it's a "limited edition") for that price, they better be immaculate. My Nick's Overlander boots put these to absolute shame and they were not as expensive. Is the horse leather really worth overlooking all the issues including the nail possibly sticking someone in the foot? I know if I was wearing my boots for 12+ hours a day, a nail sticking my heel would get old pretty quick and those boots would be getting sent back to Wesco immediately.

Wow. I started wearing Wescos 20 years ago after finding a very old pair of steel toe Jobmasters at a second hand store in London, UK. British work boots tend to be very delicate in comparison with PNW boots, so I was immediately impressed and have worn Wescos ever since, getting them repaired and resoled along the way because I don't like waste. It's disappointing and almost embarrassing to discover they're so poorly made in comparison with boots from similar US manufacturers.

I have a little Wesco story for you. In 2012 I was living in SF in a warehouse in SOMA, near the leather daddy district. I had quit my job and was about to ride my motorcycle all the way south to Ushuaia. I needed a pair of boots, so I went to Stompers ("The best damn boot store in the world"), and at this pop and pop boot shop I got talked into getting a pair of Wescos. I ended up with a custom pair of Jobmasters, which came up to just below my knees. When I told the owner of the store about my plans, he offered to sponsor me if I would write blog posts about my trip, which I did. My boots worked really well going all the way south, and they were sexy enough to trick my (now) wife into falling in love with me. Also this is why my resume now says "Intercontinental Adventure Motorcyclist / Boot Model". So yeah I've got a little soft spot in my heart for the Wescos.

For 7fidy $$$ it should have come with complementary medical shots for that nail. Also, you've pointed it out yourself, the stitching looks like it was done on a Wednesday, to put it kindly. At the beginning of the video you pitched your own leather wallets; are those also the same level of askew, "Meh, good enough. Ship IT!" ? A boot with a nail pre-aimed at your foot, is like a car steering wheel with the column sharpened and the A/b disconnected. "Imma gonna climb up this tree/pole/areal/antenna, better watch my fooo... Ouch, fk... i'm dead." Edit: Thinking about it, me and other commenters are probably pointing the above (more or less) because You ARE the "Cut in half, and call it BS or 👍" Guy. The heel counter is a thermoplastic material that is formed to the shape of a heel cup, and ultimately holds that shape more consistently over time.
@rudimussrodeln Жыл бұрын
possible but thermoplastic is more of a 200$ boot feature
@neomoritate Жыл бұрын
@@rudimussrodeln Wesco, who has been making boots for over 100 years, uses thermoplastic heel counters because they maintain their shape better over time than leather. Unlike most other parts of a boot' the heel counter does not "break in", it is shaped to the last, and meant to stay in that shape for the life of the boot. Heavy leather heel counters rarely fail, but they do fail more frequently than thermoplastic. The thermoplastic counter is also significantly more expensive that leather heel counters. There are plenty of flaws to pick out on this boot, the heel counter is not one, and it is another in a long line of examples of the host not having a working knowledge of footwear manufacturing.
@rudimussrodeln Жыл бұрын
@@neomoritate thermoplastic is cheap material its used in meermin 200$ boots. In their 600$ boots meermin uses leather. I have 0 ideas how you would think thermoplastic is more expensive.
@JimKiralfy Жыл бұрын
@@rudimussrodeln Meermin don't use thermoplastic; they use Celastic. Same with most cheap brands. Celastic is a resin impregnated fabric that can be dipped in acetone and molded into shape, which then hardens as it dries. It's cheap and requires no specialist equipment to work with. When you see lightweight stage props, they're usually made out of Celastic and painted by the props department. Stytherm, which is what Wesco uses (not Celastic as incorrectly stated in the video), needs specialist equipment to work with. Once cut into shape, the Stytherm counter has to be heated on a special machine. Once softened by heat, the counter is then formed to the correct shape inside the boot. Once formed, the Stytherm has to be rapidly cooled in a different part of the process, resulting in a permanently formed counter that won't lose its shape. Material costs are usually only a small part of a boot's manufacturing costs; most of the cost is time and labour. Stytherm is slower to work with than leather, and requires specialist equipment and skills. Plus, most bootmakers will usually always have loads of leather in stock, whereas Stytherm will need to be ordered separately in a range of thicknesses. It's used despite the extra manufacturing complexity because it doesn't lose its shape when wet like leather can. I'm not aware of any cheap brands who use Stytherm (plenty use Celastic, but that's a very different material), and I'm not sure why you'd think the extra time, labour and energy required to utilise Stytherm would make it 'cheaper'?
@rudimussrodeln Жыл бұрын
