Hey Weston, that outsole appears to be the Vibram 377K "Christy Thick" which does have the yellow medallion style logo in the middle. It's a slightly thicker version of the Cristy as the name implies and it's made of a different "Newflex" compound vs the blown rubber of the classic Cristy.

I find their choice of CoolMax for a toe lining "interesting." I'd actually believe it helps the boot breath better because it has a great reputation for wicking away sweat when used in athletic wear. However, CoolMax athletic wear clothing also has a reputation of absorbing odors that can't be washed out. So to put it in the toe of a boot where it can't be washed & where lots of odors are produced raises lots of concerns for me.

Bought a pair after your first video. Most comfortable boot out of the box that i have ever had. They held up very well. I injured my foot and ended up having to go to a larger size but because they were so inexpensive it didn’t bother me to drop them off at a thrift store and they were gone in a day. If there's on thing I learned since becoming an adult, it's that Made In China products aren't shit because they're made in China, they're shit because the companies that sell them paid for them to be made shit in China. As a child, I was taught to avoid anything made in China. Obviously you can expect China-made products to be worse than products made places that are traditionally good at producing said items. But I do think China gets unfairly written off for reasons that are not entirely their fault.

I came here to say this. I took a chance on them after emailing them with a list of questions. They took the time to reply back not only promptly, but with pictures and a video of every piece of the boot that I inquired about, as well as why they chose to use it over say other more "classic" materials. Needless to say, it was enough to sway me to purchase a pair. I'm currently on my second week with them and so far I have no complaints (other than they smell like glue/leather dye). Comfort is absolutely top tier for me, and they are wider than say Thorogood or Danner, which is great for me. Even Thorogood's "wide" wasn't quite wide enough for my feet. (I was an avid Thorogood user prior)

I highly disagree. I've owned 3 pairs rock rooster boots and every pair the junk cork board broke up into chunks and migrated creating voids, and felt like rocks underfoot. Cork board is junk vs hot cork that is bonded to the shoe. Rock rooster are ok , but do not expect a long life. I personally would take old stock die hard or a rocky boot over a rock rooster as a budget boot. For a premium boot go with a thorogood 1957.

I bought a pair of RockRooster Roberta (VAP615) boots about a year ago. They have the same vibram outsole and funky insole as that mock toe. First thing I did was swap that squishy insole for cork insoles. Then gave them a good dose of water proofing. I wear them almost every day and they're going strong. What I like most is the huge toe box. I'm very happy with them and hope to get another year or so of use.

Thanks for the review, love your work. I brought the golden fox service boot last year for work and I am happy with it. I plan to sew on a new leather welt, cork and convert it to a black vibram wedge sole when the outer sole wears down (teaching myself shoemaking and cobbling). I have lots of boots but didn't want to use a high quality boot to work. The quality of the Golden Fox and Rock Rooster are good enough for relatively light to medium duty work as long as you maintain them. (I brush off the boots every other day and wipe them down every two weeks with a wet rag. Thoroughly clean and condition them every few months)

They’re not as comfortable as when I got them but all I’d need to do is switch out the insole for a new one and they’d be very comfortable but as it stands they’re just fine and have held up amazingly. I like that the wedge sole has a rubber lining so you don’t get that goofy looking wear and tear like you get with something like redwings were you can see how you walk unevenly on the heel and what not.

So I decided to grab a pair of these because they hit a few marks... unlined, wedge sole, quality construction. I am not disappointed. The white sole and orange-y color accentuates the size 15 of it all, but F it, I like them, and the soles get dirty immediately.

In my experience with cool max vs merino wool, cool max wicks away more moisture, but it reeks compared to merino wool and my foot seems to sweat more in cool max than merino wool.

I used to love merino wool, but I had to stop wearing it after I developed an allergy to it a couple of years ago.

Vibram will make bespoke outsoles. Over my almost 50-years in the shoe retail and repair industry I've seen this many times. Sometimes the sole will be a unique model for a maker while other times it will be one of the Vibram in-house designs with a bit of an Easter Egg that silently says it is a special made sole for one footwear manufacturer. At one time we were told the best Vibram soles got the iconic yellow label. I can't say that's actually true, but it was floated around the industry at a time. I think it doesn't do much except advertise Vibram now though. I like what you've exposed here and find it interesting. Since they went to the trouble of the leather Goodyear welt I'm surprised that the internal heel counter is all synthetic. Heel counters are very important as they not only protect and resist heel supination and pronation, they are often the only interior part of the boot to wear out before the upper itself. I believe it would raise the bar on this boot had Rockrooster used a quality sweat-resistant tanned leather as the modest increase in cost would be well spent. In the early days of knitted linings Cambrelle by Faytex Fabrics was pretty good because it usually did last a long time and was made to both breathe and transport sweat. If this is genuine Coolmax it has synthetic long fibers that actually have a groove in each strand. The grove was said to also be an excellent conduit (i.e. a gutter) for sweat to be pulled away from the user's socks. The idea is to mimic Merino wool. However, there's differences as one would expect. Simply put, Merino wool does everything better and will resist wear longer while having a natural resistance to the retention of odors that Coolmax must add an anti-microbial element to modestly achieve, if that extra is even added. Leather linings are nice but often, as they are thin and flexible like fabric, wear through wherever there is constant moving contact such as at the outside edge of the small and big toes as well as sometimes where the users big toe nail touches on top. Still, leather vamp linings are considered the finest construction though they are only found now in fairly expensive boots and shoes. All in all, by what you've brought to our attention here, I'd have to agree that this is a solid boot at a fairly low price. One thing I did notice is that the Rockrooster moc-toe looks like a machine sewn crimped version and not a hand-stitched one such as on the Red Wing Heritage wedge sole and on the various Danner Bull Runs. That is OK, but aesthetically the hand-sewn moc-toes look much better. Love your channel!

Junk products from China being dumped on the US market is bad. If they can make a high-quality product that undercuts prices of American-made products, that’s just capitalism. Most of us cannot afford a $700 Nicks, so this Rock Rooster is surprisingly great quality at a price that we can afford.

Vibram has a color version of the 4014 wedge that they use on more fashion oriented footwear (377K). The white version looks similar to the classic 4014 but it's whiter and has the yellow logo.

Ive heard really good things from people who wear 2 pairs of boots interchangeably. Obviously they are going to last at least twice as long as one pair, but you are also giving them 36 hours of time to air out in between use instead of only 12.

With the economy tanking daily, money is tight. No matter who you are, you have noticed it. I started checking out upper tier used men's clothing. I found a pair of Grant Stone boots that were needing a resole that actually fit my feet. The uppers were in fantastic shape. Bought them, sent them off for resole, got them back, and WOW. Like new boots already broken in. Keep your eyes open and look for savings in places you never considered.

We used to get our boots re-soled when I was stationed at Ft Bragg. The vibrant soles had the same yellow logo. This was in the early 2000s. I always thought the more recent same color logo was a consumer version.

It's hard to imagine a better option for something that you can just throw on and maybe abuse, and just generally not worry about too much. I have expensive boots and I don't love working in them around oil and grease and scraping them all to hell, but I could 100% see myself wearing these for the nasty jobs.

I've seen Vibrams with the yellow logo on all kinds of boots, I don't think it's a mark of a lesser sole. Just that some Vibrams have a yellow logo and some don't. I prefer the non yellow logo.

I think the reason why they can make shoes this cheap, is that labour in general is just cheaper in China, and average citizen's buying power is lower, even tho it had been going up this days. If you look up on Taobao, there are like 875 knockoffs with real leather for like 40 bucks or something, knock off brown leather Air Jordans with a GYW with leather welt for like 60 bucks. But then you can't really have a more expensive boot sold there, cuz that's just around the price what everyone expected, a 120 bucks boot on Taobao that is made in China would be outrageous. There are some other Rockrooster hiking boots selling for like 40 to 50 bucks as well, but they are like, your average hiking boots like Columbia.

I have had these boots for 2 years now. I primarily wear them in the winter so not a lot of usage. But I recently wore them a few months ago while I was working on building my fence. They were great and comfortable to wear while working. But far these are the most comfortable boots I've worn. But I can't afford a $300-$400 pair of boots. I can only compare them to cheaper boots and a pair of wolverines that were so stiff and uncomfortable that I had to send them back.

I'm enjoying these reviews, even though I'm not in the market for almost all of the sneakers / boots / shoes reviewed. [I wear a small, extremely wide women's size.] One thing that would make the reviews even better would be a brief discussion of size and fit. For example, on these low cost moc-toes, I'll bet there are a lot of people with wide feet who want to know which boots run narrow - or vice versa. It wouldn't need to be more than about 10 seconds of talk: "this boot runs wide, our narrow footed tester had too much room even with thick socks".

If I am remembering correctly, the old Vibram outsoles of t he 1980's were bright yellow. I am impressed with the ROCKROOSTER product; however, the sort of flimsy shaft is a slight turn off. And again another great review. I appreciate you man.

When it comes to budget boots I only have 2 priorities. That the outsoles last atleast 6-8 months before they have no tread, and that the leather outlasts the outsole. Once the outsole is toast, it’s on to the next pair.

16:18 Dar dbagh or Chouara Tannery, is the oldest tannery in the world, it takes place in my home twon Fes Morocco, i grew up around this place and my grandpa RIP was the head person responsibile for the quality of all the leather that gets in and out from the tannery and he sadly died from asthma (Which he developed from the leather smell) In Chouara tannery everything is done naturally, they sink the animal skin in Lime to get red of all the hair, they use Pigeon guano to make the leather soft and wearable then use Bran to make it smooth and a few other stuff .. But just like in the old days, it's 100% natural Although that one simple clip brought back some sad memories on me, it's really beautiful to see the Tannery being recognized in a leather related channel !!
