Common Projects Achilles Low White Sneaker Review - The Common Projects shoes are allegedly the highest quality sneakers in the world, so I bought a pair to cut in half to review the leather quality, see how it's built, and to see what's inside the Achilles Common Projects.

Man, thank you for this video. I own 2 pairs of those sneakers in black. One achilles low just like in the video, and the other achilles high-tops. I bought the first pair in the early 2010s. I really loved the quality of it. I wore them for 3 years almost every single day. The upper part was in good shape but the soles needed resoling. Long story short I did resole them, didn’t like the result, because it made them even heavier than they used to be, and so I stopped wearing them. In 2018 I saw a good deal on achilles high-tops, so I bought them as well. I did not spot it right from the box, but after a few months of wear, I've noticed that the leather wasn't as rugged and resilient to harsh weather conditions as my first pair used to be. And after a year of day-to-day wear leather even got little cracks. Today I saw your video. After I finished watching it I took both pairs and compared the thickness of the leather on the upper part. I do not have the tools that you have, but even by touch, feel and look I can tell that the older pair is much thicker, sturdier and has more quality to it and the younger pair looks like the one in your video. From that I can conclude that the brand decided to cut some corners after getting some recognition, which is very sad because the initial idea of luxury minimal sneaker and the product itself was great. If you like I can send the older pair to you so you can review it for everyone to see the initial quality of the brand.

I used to work for Superdry. There was a leather jacket that cost like £2 to manufacture, they sold it for £600. David Beckham was seen wearing it, so they decided to ratchet the price up to £2000. Most of their clothes are manufactured in Turkey very cheap and sold for ridiculous profit. The quality is no better or worse than a much cheaper brand.

Although these items say "Made in Italy", the EU rules are such that products only need to finished in, in this case, Italy, to qualify as "Made in Italy". The majority of Dior ladies shoes are made in rural Romania in a factory Dior has there. They are taken to almost completion, then shipped to France for finishing, and marked "Made in France". When challenged, Dior was upfront about the process, said the technical skills in Romania were 2nd to none for cobbling, and that they were operating within the EU rules. I'm not sure the ladies who lunch would pay $2000 for Dior shoes if they saw "Made in Romania" on them.

@@luobomu9747 No, it's not at all the same as Swiss luxury watches, because they're actually made in Switzerland, and actually are luxury watches with extremely high quality engineering and craftsmanship behind them, usually entirely built by hand and require a lot of skill and precision to make them as good as they are. Don't compare a few pieces of of low quality leather and rubber to incredibly complex and accurate mechanical objects with hundreds of tiny moving parts all built and finished to perfection.

To shed light on the shank issue: Many factories use pre-molded texon insole boards with the shank glued between the layers of the midsole and insole boards. It’s pretty standard. The shank helps support the arch of the foot a bit bc the outsole has air pockets in the thicker heel area to increase cushion and also to reduce the weight of the shoe.

I'm guessing 5 or 6 years ago, these would have "only" cost $150. In the intervening period, branded "luxury" good have gone up WAY more than inflation. Example : Burberry raincoats were c. GPB450. Then the new creative director came in, and immediately increased the price to GBP1,100. When asked why, he said that he needed to position his items as luxury, so they had to be in that price bracket. Same product. Just near 200% price increase.

Thanks for the video, very interesting. I have shoes made in the same factory and ones that look very similar and retail for almost as much (slightly less). Diemme Veneto Low. I bought my first pair in white in 2015 and they served me well until 2019 when they finally started to fall apart. I then bought a second pair in brown in 2019 and wear them to this day in warm seasons. Given that I'm a heavy guy (193 cm, 95+ kg) and absolutely shred through shoes, these stand the test of time and I absolutely love them. So I don't know about Common Projects but the factory that makes them can make a good shoe IMO.

salad. Not really. A shank is so that when you foot is bending the sneaker, it directs the arch strike to the heel. This is why it’s a stiff metal or wood piece and not “thicker insole” in regular shoes. Maybe go watch Bedo on KZbin or actually make some shoes and you might understand it better. That’s one thing I wish this guy would do, he comes in with no knowledge and starts criticizing. After you actually make a pair or two of shoes or boots from scratch you understand why things are the way they are.

Koio has more full leather. CP has softer leather. This guy is also incorrect in saying that chrome tan leather is cheap and bad. That's factually incorrect. Any tannery, say Horween, will charge you $0.50 or $1 more for veg tan but that's because veg tan takes longer to process, not because veg tan is higher quality. This guy also doesn't understand the difference between full grain and top grain.... CPs are more sleek, Koio thicker leather but slightly more stiff, and also costs less.

Really interesting for me to watch. I bought CPs back in 2006, when I was still in school. They lasted me 6 years and were a great shoe, back when they were known as a 'budget' fashion shoe. I don't know if the manufacturing side of things changed between 2006 and now, but I would not pay modern prices for them, seeing as I paid 60% of the modern price. I'll stick to a cheaper everyday shoe like Converse, or shoes that validate the price.
@jklasfjkl
@jklasfjkl Жыл бұрын
Indeed. They are not 425$ shoes. They were half the price and due to the hype they kept increasing the price. I can't blame them. If the demand is higher than what you supply, why shouldn't you increase the price?

There's no point in doing this for luxury brands like SLP or Gucci, because their high price tag isn't due to perceived quality, but brand name. It only works for brands like Common Projects who's price tag is justified by their supposedly superior quality.

some years back i took apart an pair of air force 1's. i'd say that they were manufactured in 2002. i was disappointed at how there was so little to them. i liked the leather upper but between the upper and the sole was a plastic wedge and the sole was pretty thin... opened my eyes to how things are made and what they really cost!

I work with leather part time, making bags and journals. Use Horween and sometimes Antelope hides from Europe. There is a big difference in quality, but most products appear to be made with the "genuine leather" garbage material. I recently got a watch from Seiko (watch fanatic with small collection, I don't normally buy watches under 1k because this is what happens) and thought at that price point (425) the strap would be a decent leather but is absolute crap "genuine leather" and feels like plastic. Finding quality takes a lot of research thanks for the content.
@chrismejia2836
@chrismejia2836 4 жыл бұрын
As a watch enthusiast at that price, I wouldn't expect the seiko strap to be great leather a that price point (not that Seiko is bad watch by any means) but fortunately you can buy aftermarket straps that are of higher quality and breath new life in a watch ;)

Hi, I really like your channel! I have something to say... The shank is really used in Italy, because we used to make high heels (you must use a shank to last high heels) so is a sort of tradition to use shank inside the foot bed. I think that it helps the shoe to maintain is form during time. The leather counter, even if it is a recomposed leather, is a good solution, because is more natural and ecological instead of sinthetic counters and it is really durable. The hand lasting is really expensive in comparison with costs of raw materials, but here the lasting is really a 'craftsmanship thing'. I suppose these shoes are selled from the factory around 100$...but the final cost is like 4th times, because there are lot of steps before arriving in the shops. American shoes are less expensive usually because they are in shops in a few number of steps.
