Clark Desert Boots Review - Clarks chukka boots are the most popular chukka style boot. They have been around for almost a century and some say they are the most comfortable boots/shoes around. So i cut some in half to see what's inside of them and why they are comfortable shoes.

I've worn Clark's desert boots for 40 years and currently own about ten or so pairs in different colors. You're right about their simplicity and the high quality materials. I belong to the crowd who holds these boots to be extremely comfortable. I never did need that much support in a shoe, just something sturdy to wrap around my feet. I can walk all day long on those crepe soles. I have one pair that is a quarter century old and still holds up to a good day's wear!

If Clark's improved these boots by adding a shank would that be known as the Shoe-shank redemption?

I own the desert boot in suede. They're a good shoe and durable. I've owned them for 10 years and they've held up well. This is a casual shoe (indeed, it's the original casual shoe) and I dont consider them boots.

So I needed a pair of casual shoes for the office. I bought a pair of the cheaper version of these, the "Bushacre 2," which come with a synthetic sole that is a bit firmer and more supportive than the standard crepe. While I cannot say that I have felt the pain in the heel as mentioned, I did find the lack of lacing to keep the shoes in place irritating. easy enough fix. Took advantage of the very thick stand up leather, used my belt punch and viola! third lace hole up top. MY GOD it makes all the difference. Once broken in and formed to your ankle shape, you can lace them a bit tighter and the third lace hole helps to keep your feet locked into the shoes making them so much more comfortable. Good thing the laces are extras long, as they seemed almost to be meant to have a third lace point. I bought the beeswax finish and they are incredibly soft and supple. Do I expect the glued down sole to last forever... absolutely not, but then they can be resoled thanks to the stitched down method. Finally, I purchased them from amazon for $51. So pretty solid deal.

I really like the suede desert boots by Clarks, they are also available in a low cut version, for these I removed the crepe heel raise so now the crepe soles have the same thickness all over the sole and they walk super comfy ! Regarding the high cut version: they do tend to slip a bit as you mentioned, I just solved this by punching out an extra pair of eyelets on the top, works great ! In general with shoes and boots you might consider experimenting by adding an extra pair of insoles in thicker/thinner versions, might make a big difference in walking comfort. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Hi, these were popular with British soldiers serving in the middle east and India, This was the informal civilian uniform “Mufti “ that was authorised when not dressed in issued uniforms. These boots were made by camp cobblers who would draw the outline of your feet on a paper and come back with a pair of boots the following week. The originally boots were commissioned in Cairo cobblers by South African soldiers whose old-military issue boots had failed them out on the desert terrain. We British soldiers who served in Africa, Muscat and Oman, Aden, and the Far East had at least a couple of pairs of these boots in our kit but always suede leather, and found them very comfortable boots.

My Clark's Chelseas definitely have a shank, and they're the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. Weird how they don't put a shank in these, they cost the same. Then again, they are significantly better crafted, with a leather layer in the heel and the arch.

I agreed with every criticism except the uncomfortable part, they don't last long (sole gets worn out) and if they are not sized just right, there is a lot of heel slippage, dangerously slippery when wet and walking on a smooth surface like tile or frozen rain, but under normal conditions they are like walking on a cloud. I get mine to last about a year of daily use wearing them to work, grocery stores, moderate walks through the city, occasional short hikes through texas hill country. After a year the sole is gone.

An interesting thing about crepe is when repairing you do not need glue, you just scour both mating surfaces and then press with low to midium pressure after finishing apply French chalk as to remove the takcy finish. Off cuts can be used for removing glue and marks, also when picking stitching rubbing with a piece of crepe will pull out cut stitches quickly

I believe desert boots were made for officers during the North African campaign. I think the reason why you don't have a shank, and made out of crepe, is because you need a bit of "flex" in order to scale up the side of a sand dune. Very difficult to walk up the side of a sand dune when you wore the old "gunner" boots, as your feet will dig itself into the sand up to the shins.

The history of the boots is really interesting and would explain all you need to know - I’m surprised you didn’t mention it. They were the off duty boots for English soldiers fighting in the desert. I think the reason the discoloration happens isn't so much that the wax or oil is "moved" in or out of the leather, but that the surface area of the leather is increased by stretching and opening the fibers (the oil/wax follows, and also has increased surface area, thus a duller appearance due to more scattered light), and then when you rub it what happens is that the fibers, oil, and wax are burnished and simply smoothed out, causing less scattering of light.

Loving the style and looks of these shoes, I’ve had multiples of for years now as the bottoms don’t generally hold up all that well. Being tried of throwing away and buying the same shoe I called a shoe cobbler to see if there were any options of resoling. To my surprise, there were. I had mine resolved in a creme colored vibram bottom (pic can be googled). Since replacement, this shoe has become a game changer. It is so much more supportive and I can finally we’re them in the rain 😉.

Finally! A video that explains why my heels hurt after a day of working in a pair of these Clarks! I stand most of the day at work (I'm a chiropractor) and find my heels hurting towards the end of a long stretch of standing. It's a soreness that I hadn't experienced with other shoes/boots and was baffled why this happened. I knew that they were a classic style of shoe and bought them for that reason but didn't realise that they had a design flaw that inherently leads to discomfort. I thought about adding a store-bought insole hoping to add some cushioning to the heel but now I realise that it would be futile given that these boots don't have a shank. One thing I discovered is that the crepe sole do not slip on ice/snow in comparison to other shoes. I was with friends at a snow trip here in Victoria, Australia and realised that I was walking upright and comfortably in the carpark with my Clarks while my mates were slip-sliding around in runners! Somehow the rubber composition of these crepe soles are better and grippy-er on ice and snow. I have a couple of pairs of these chukkas and they look good paired with jeans (selvedge or faded) or chinos. Thank you for this video!

Hey mate, You should compare these to the Astorflex Greenflex desert boot. Similar price, Blake stitched welted sole, leather lined, veg tanned leather uppers, natural rubber sole (pretty sure the Clark's are blended with oil which is why they get so slippery in the rain), made in Italy. Much more comfortable and leave the Clark's for dead.

They used to be my favorite Clark's, but I since found the desert trek and wallabee shoes. They're the desert boot killer. Thicker soles, and they just feel more robust. I'd say similar quality as Blundstone, but don't feel as sturdy. But I recommend Wallabees, I wear mine with a thick insole so they don't fall off.

To each their own....Wallabees are ankle destroyers. The point of desert boots is that they are simple go with anything footwear (especially the suede) The thinner sole means you can dress it up, a thicker sole doesn't allow this as it has a more casual look.

2 things - I find my clarks to be the most comfortable shoe/boot I own and am on my third pair of nearly daily wear. I probably get one pair/year which isn't bad. 1) You have to size down. I mistakenly order half a size up and they were unwearable. I returned and got the right size and there's pretty much no break in process and they were perfect. The only thing they lack is longevity, however for a shoe that's 45-70 bucks, I can't complain. 2) I like them over longer lasting boots because of the very comfortable sole and short heel. Boots with tall heels are terrible for your feet and for me anything over 3/4 inch feel like I'm walking on my tip toes. Clarks I believe are 3/4 and with the compressibility of the crepe sole, it feels even less than that.

You're tearing apart a genuine Clark's boots... but i can tell you that In Italy we have better made desert boots from other producer that does have better cushion on the rear of the shoe and they do cost less than the original Clark's desrt boots ..
