I've been working on my own vehicles for 35 years and after watching the first few minutes of this video I didn't have much confidence in your abilities to complete this project. I stuck it out and watched the whole video and I have to admit I actually learned a few things. Keep up the good work, thanks for posting it!

Glad it helped! I wish I had been more professional about filming and explaining this project, but this is something in which I wasn't sure if I was going to film, and then I decided to film halfway through the project. Oh well, maybe I'll be doing this again after the next 150,000 miles =)

Excellent video and job! So informative to actually see a Mechanic "work the problem" and overcome installation difficulties! OUTSTANDING! NOT like the HIGHLY edited "TV Car Shows" that only show how to do the job, when EVERYTHING GOES PERFECTLY, every part slips right into place( which almost NEVER happens)!! I believe those Car Shows, simplify everything, to sell the SPONSERS PARTS AND ACCESSORIES.

your video inspires others to take on this challenging task when the spider gears fall out . the s spring must be tapped out through the hole with a hammer, then the planetary gears easily spin into place. the vice grips are only needed to lock compression long enough to wrap the spring with two large zip ties which will easily hold tension. after the s spring is partially tapped in place , snip and remove the zip ties , then tap the spring to the correct position with a hammer. this is safer and easy way to reset the spring with no pliers in the way

Thanks for video man. Rebuilding mine right now left planetary gear was completely stripped away with Metal shards every where clutch packs were all chewed up and missing the little ears or wings what ever they are called freaking cleaning was a pain in the efin ass 😂. got quotes of $2,800 to replace entire differential??!! I guess many mechanics don’t like to rebuild? Idk the shady ass shop i went to told me to rebuild would be double the price then to just replace with used reman diff that’s what brought me here.

Solid video bro. Only question is how did you remove the c clips from the axle? Were the easy to push off with just the finger? It seemed that way
@OldSoulMillennial9 ай бұрын
C clips are easy to remove. Once you have the planetary gears removed, the shaft, and the s spring, push the axle on the hub, the axle will slide an inch or two towards the center of the truck. Then you can pull off the c clips (usually by hand).

Yes, the small bolt that holds the main carrier shaft in place does have thread locker on it. I purchased a new carrier shaft, and included in the kit was a new small bolt with thread locker preinstalled on the threads. If you reuse the pin you should use some type of thread locker

I picked up a OEM 8.8 trac lok carrier and I'm in the process of rebuilding it. Picked up a new clutch pack set and got the packs to .640" and upto .655" and I cannot spin the spider gears back into place no matter what I do. Not sure what the deal is, no shims or steels left in the carrier. The old clutch packs measured .550" and of course the spider gears fell right out and spun back in no issues. Driving me nuts because all the videos I see of people installing them with .650" clutch packs they just spin right in. Not mine, the thrust washer on the spider gears contact the carrier and won't turn into their spots.
@MyaC_TRAHR7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this, had to rebuild the inside of my own 8.8 trac lock yesterday, broken spiders, your vise grip tip was perfect for getting that freaking spring back in, it reallllllly helps to have a second pair of hands to turn the axles for walking the spiders into the carrier.

Double check and make sure you didn't leave an old cutch pack friction disk or steel in the carrier. My first go, I left a steel from the old clutch pack. Took me 2 days to figure it out. Make sure the spider gears are directly across from one another. This will take a couple try

I wish my spider gears where as bad as yours, removed the cover to replace an axle and it looks like someone gave my spider gears a shit ton of meth, but no indication (noise or binding). Why would they go bad? Car has 160k and a weeping pinion seal that i add fluid too once in awhile. Only noise i hear is a bad wheel bearing (from bent axle flange).
@putomorelia5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the rookie question, this Axle that you're showing on your video is a limited slip differential right? So that means both of the tires have the same amount of equal force when spinning (say one tire is on water and the other is in dry floor ) i'm asking this question because I have the same axle on my jeep wrangler 1993, it has the same set up as your differential that you're showing here, but for some reason I feel like mine is not A limited slip differential, even though it's the same as yours including the S spring,
@RyTrapp05 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's a limited slip, that's what the stack of plates behind the spiders gears is for And, YES, because these are clutch-type limited slips - they rely on friction between the clutch plates/steels(the aforementioned 'stack of plates behind the spider gears') - it's extremely common for them to no longer limit slip(lol) due to being worn out after 75,000-100,000 miles. Which is why there's a bunch of rebuild guides like this all over the web for them You don't have a problem, it's all good, the clutches are just wore out and need replaced. Being a clutch-type, they are most definitely maintenance/wear items, so this isn't uncommon by any means. Now, since you have an 8.8-swapped Jeep, presumably with larger tires(33s? 35s?), I would suggest considering the upgraded carbon fiber clutch pack kit, which is literally what it sounds like. Also, you can look around the web(especially off road & drag racing sites) and find guides for alternative clutch pack stacks(different arrangements of the clutches & steels) that will tighten it up and make it more effective, especially with larger off road tires(and drag tires for that matter). Now, there's no 'free lunch' of course - if you use these guides to tighten up your clutch packs, that will increase the friction between the clutches/steels, causing them to wear quite a bit faster than the stock arrangement, necessitating a rebuild sooner. Like 20,000 miles or so, depending on how the vehicle is driven, so still pretty reasonable given the performance gain.
@glennmanchester15685 жыл бұрын
I would have been throwing wrenches that's a hard enough task with the rear end on a stand not still in the vehicle and you persevered thru it props my boy props for sure you are the shit lol I've done a few gm 12 bolts years ago but it's been a good long tIME WE JUST pulled one out of a f150 that was run low on oil and the spiders were much worse than those the clutch packs do not look very good either due to heat so I would need a complete kit the ring and pinion surprisingly are in. Good shape still and before I unbolted the carrier I checked the back Ash expecting 20 thou or better it was close only 14 thou so I know it's just out of spec but I really don't want to change the shims and it did not ,make any bad whine or anything before this self destructing so where do I get the whole kit to rebuild the whole carrier .and I'm going to wing it and see where it takes me besides possibly to the looney bin or the hospital lol thanks

To me, sounds like a possible worn out carrier pin, worn spider gears, bad thrust washers, could be any of those or something else. Only way to find out is to take the diff apart.

do all these differencials have a spring and clutch like that ? i didnt see one on my 150 van
@OldSoulMillennial6 жыл бұрын
Not al differentials have clutch packs. This is one style of a "limited slip" Differential. Limited slip means if one tire starts to spin, the clutch packs will grab, causing the other tire to start to spin as well. If you do not have clutch packs, it is possible you have a differential with no "limited slip". Generally there is a tag bolted onto the cover of the differential with the specific model of your diff. That would be the best to use for locating information on your trucks diff.
