Thank you shimshamdaddy for posting this gem. I have to say, out of my 50 year career in films (many as a dancer) I had the complete, honest to goodness joy of working on "Red Garters". Seeing this clip fills me with the best kind of nostalgia a person can experience. I've always believed this film was so far ahead of its time..style, score, choreography and performances that it had never received the recognition it deserved. The cast was perfect for this unusual take on a film rarity...a Western Musical! Wish Turner would run it sometime so that fans could again see Rosemary Clooney and Jack Carter at their best and enjoy Nick Castle's terrific choreography. This first ballad is so good!!!!!!

My mother said Buddy was known for being a excellent dancer way back before The Beverly Hillbillies

I just can't take Buddy Epsen seriously as dancer. He always seems to be doing comedy shtick when he dances.

It was called "eccentric" dancing, and it was one of many types of dancing a vaudeville audience might be familiar with -- many more than we know today. Crazy-legged guys like Hal LeRoy and Ray Bolger made a point of unique style, because you had to do something to stand out.

Also, Buddy was 6' 4" on set with people that were MUCH shorter. It is said that he deliberately slouched and bent to get in frame with the smaller performers. In this clip, the ladies were, on average, about 5'4", making him about a foot taller than the chorus line.

you must be young. Those of us who are older either remember this type of dancing or were told by their parents. Buddy was so flexible in his joints, AND his spine was also very mobile, unlike Cagney who had "legs" but a very stiff spine.

@@GrowthruGod No I dint. Seen Buddy dance numerous times. He was known as “an eccentric dancer,” way back then at the time. And I saw some of those in the theater - the first time they were shown - back when movies were family entertainment and everybody dressed up for it, and they had ushers, etc.
