Sorry RC, but I think you kind of missed the mark of the song in several places. 1. Most glaringly, the golden calculator part is very obviously about materialism. The line break is (by my reckoning) actively descriptive. Meant to express more meant that she needed those material things more and more for increasingly pointless tasks until she eventually realizes that she needs to actually improve as a person in order to find men that are worth actually being with. 2. The way you engaged with the hook was missing just one element to get the point. it is a reversal of a regionally common saying ancillary to “…shit doesn’t stink” in the form of “…shit smells like roses”. 3. The entire feature verse is meant to fill in the ‘viewer perspective’. Whereas the rest of the song provides a descriptive instance of a specific subject, the guest verse is meant to provide a “relatable” and more general description of these kinds of women. The “pardon me are you balling?” Reads more to me as the woman taking a superior attitude. Essentially trying to place herself above the person trying to interact with her if they can’t cough up the cash. 4. The entire song was meant to be a more childish take on the ideas surrounding the inherently childish nature of the shallow materialistic thinking in contrast to the very mature struggles with persevering through the strain of relationships in ‘Hey Ya’. This informed many of the naive word choices in various places. You got this immediately during the ‘breakdown’ section, so I don’t really get why you didn’t apply it to the rest of the song. Regardless, it comes through most obviously through the music video. Not only through the theming, being literally a school play, but also by the way it was shot. Almost every shot not done to emphasize the “characters” that were never fleshed out being from above, emphasizing the idea that these people are small/young and many of the expressions of their feelings are underdeveloped. I hope you see this and give it a read, maybe even enjoy the engagement. If you do, thanks!

Just a couple points I wanted to note: The chorus is basically saying that she may be pretty (a rose) the more you get to know her (leaning a little closer), you realize how off putting she is. The “golden calculator” either could be seen as her being so materialistic that it she would literally need one made of gold or it could be seen as metaphorical. Like it would take a miracle for her to gain some introspection. The “Pausing” line is him stopping the conversation with the girl, as if it just clicked in his mind the type of person he was talking to. Honestly this review seemed more nitpicky than analytical.

@cman8995
@cman8995 Жыл бұрын
I agree, the roses part obviously isn't supposed to be a metaphor of "she's just like a rose, which not everyone knows but actually smells really really bad!", it's clearly an idiom simply saying "she looks like a rose but her personality is like a poo" (you know just like the word "crocodile tears". Obviously crocodiles don't fake cry to gain sympathy from prey in real life, but the word paints a picture of someone who fakes tears for bad intentions). The lyrics are supposed to be corny (I mean the chorus literally repeats the word "poo poo") to illustrate the concept of the song/album of "19th century romanticism merged with a grungy hip hop culture and its immature lifestyle". While it isn't a smart song on a surface like Hey ya, I think Roses did an excellent job of presenting a weird world that Andre wanted to create, both through its instrumentals and its purposefully ridiculous lyrics.

No no no, "hardly acting naughty" that's a good thing. That's why he goes to talk to her in the first place. You're looking at each line separately but those first 6 or 7 lines are supposed to be a story. Your supposed to take it all in consideration. He goes to a party, sees the girl who unlike everyone else isn't drunk and acting crazy, talks to her, exchanges numbers, finds out she only cares about his money. That's the series of events of the story he's telling.

I know the overall vibe of the channel since I used to watch it when it was coming up into more in known so I know the vibe of the content, but this is just him not liking the song and trying to find nonsense where there is answers but he clearly haven't tought them more than 2 seconds because again.. he doesn't like the song. I get it, sometimes you do that, try more time to find why you hate it than understand something. Then again as a creator/reviewer I don't think you should do that. I propably stopped watching exactly because the content jumps a lot from making sense to not much (no consistency, in my mind). Also it would be fine if something flies by but to put it into this is dumb box when you know the writers capabilities you can but it into box that yeah I don't get why this thing x is made like this, it doesn't make sense to me.

The 'Golden Calculator' critique comes off to me as a bit petty and perhaps... too literal? I was a kid when this came out, and the line always made me think that the calculator just had to be really expensive. Calling it a golden calculator was just a concise way of getting that point across. I don't think every lyric has to be that complicated to be defined as good lyrics. Also, 'Down to Mars' girls, in my opinion, is just a play on 'Men are from Mars, and Women are from Venus'. To be 'Down to Mars', would be, to be 'on a Man's level (of understanding)'.

Man... There's definitely some nostalgia for me on this album... Ok, a lot of nostalgia lol But that aside, I felt like some of your critiques were either disingenuous for the laugh or just reaching. Roses has always been a silly song. It's a joke with some real world application. Heck, OutKast has always presented their music in this aside type of off-beat manner to an extent. The Chorus to me is very clear and makes sense. It's creative and I've never heard anyone question whether or not it made sense lol (brave move their btw, since it's hard to question OutKast in hip-hop culture). But despite how I admire you going against the grain, I think it was unnecessary here, when even you clearly got the concept of the chorus from the lyrics. Lol It wasn't the type of metaphor that you compared it to, so why hold it to that standard? Lol This was really entertaining, but I think this vid falls into that category of "when it becomes popular to hate stuff that people used to love because...2020's" lol

I’m both glad and mad that this album is the last rap album to win Album of the Year. Kendrick better win next year, Grammys! #GrammysSoWhite And, the weird chivalry and misogyny from Andre has always baffled me. However, the part where Andre rambles about Caroline crashing always cracks me up! “Roses” is still a bop, and some roses can smell awful, especially when they decay. I think is does work as a double metaphor of a person or relationship who is beautiful on the outside(roses) but ugly on the inside (feces). If I think even deeper about this (is one of my best/worst traits), I can see how this function has as a metaphor about how society will automatically judge any woman who attractive as good, yet pass by other women who would be smarter, kinder, funnier, etc. who will definitely get a pass on dating apps because they don’t meet an arbitrary beauty standards set by… men!

The point you made about them being rappers and probably drawing from their life experiences with materialistic women is great. The song feels exactly like someone begging to hit, but that puts it into perspective. That’s what most of their spaces/people they were around were like. I love rose’s, in the realm of “all girls r the same” music, this one stands out to me. I’d rather male rappers pin point the girl their talking about, instead of just generalizing their complaints to “b!tches and hoes”. Overall great review, I would have given it a 3.5-4. Keep the great content coming!!!

I'll be honest with you the one thing I don't dig about the song is like the 50 minutes of them just saying the word bitch apropos of nothing. What a weird way to end a song. But yeah this is one of my go to Karaoke jams.

I always thought "She's the reason for the word 'bitch'" was an awesome line. I don't hate The Love Below or anything, but...it sure is a hard album to love. You ride a line writing eccentric lyrics, and it doesn't always pay off for Andre.

Rosses stink is a different metaphor than you think. It means looks are deceiving. She's pretty, but she has a bad personality. You gotta lean closer to feel the bad smell - once you get to know her she's insufferable.

@@uneek35 I'm pretty sure the whole metaphor is that Caroline's not actually a rose. Roses are beautiful inside and out, they look good and smell good. Caroline isn't actually a rose. She only looks nice, but she's not good on the inside, which you can only tell by actually interacting with her. When you lean a little bit closer the roses don't smell like they should.

The hook is a play on the phrase 'your shit doesn't smell like roses' and similar phrases. It is a bit clumsy but it's just a long way of saying the same thing - the roses you think your shit smell like, actually smell a lot like shit. Not that roses smell bad.

Golden calculator-Symbolizing materialism and also something that would never happen because she will never do the introspection. Divide-She needs to figure this out sooner, not later because as she gets older she will no longer be able to attract the same man she could in her prime. Down to Mars-A play on down to earth, humble but something different from the standard girl. Geez, this isn’t that hard to follow. Also, Big Boi’s verse was on point and fit within the story. It’s all about him finding a girl at a party who was down to mars and different from the other girls at the party until he found out otherwise. I have to say this one seemed to go over your head. It’s a perfect red pill song.
