Hi green sage and sorry for not replying sooner. Yes the staining was odd. It only done it on that one flush but overall that collection of roses went on to give me several further flushes without issue. A great collection of roses they are.

My vote goes to Spicy Parfuma - I love that apricot colour and such attractive foliage is a major plus as extends the season so much. I'm definitely going to be adding it to my collection in the Autumn. I also agree that Summer Romance is a fantastic rose - I only planted mine as a bare root this Spring so am really excited to see what she's like in another couple of years.

Wow! You‘ve got Chippendale (Duchess of Cornwall), one of my champion rose, very pleased with that all these years. I‘ve got Spicy Parfuma ( Herzogin Luise),bought it this year last May, growing nicely too! Brother Cadfael looks fantastic and I definitely will buy Sweet Parfuma (yellow colour). My Summer Romance didn’t have any flowers at all, it is still too young. Rose Amadeus is really performing well in your garden. So many beautiful roses, difficult to decide for number 1 rose. Hi there and thank you. I do occasionally plant to the side because I think it looks nice with an off centre. (Depending on the pot and rose). And more convenient when watering, mulching, feeding pruning. Just having that little bit of space to get your hands in. I’ve not had any issues so far.

You have so many roses in containers! I wonder how much water you need to water them, on a daily basis, I suppose. I use only rainwater and I water my plants with a watering can. I have recently had to reduce the number of plants in containers because of the frequent dry periods. I simply cannot collect enough rainwater to keep that many alive for several weeks without any rain at all.

Hi English, I have to say I don’t water my containered roses any more frequently than my planted ones. I’m not saying that is the right thing to do but it’s what’s occurring for me here with my roses. In terms of quantity of water the younger roses of course get more than my older ones. Especially potted. But in all honesty I go round once a week for all my roses and give them a total drenching. I use a hose personally but make sure they get a good drenching. If during a hot period that might increase to twice a week and very height of summer 3 times a week. Many of the potted roses are baseless even the ones against the house. I’ve got dinner plate size holes in the bottom so the roots are free to go down into the soil and worms can come up. I’m at the point now I can tell if a rose is thirsty so I occasionally go attend to that one but I don’t think it’s happened yet this year for me. Young potted roses will take more water. If overtime the potted roses on my driveway remain potted (I know many of them won’t) I will look into cutting the bottom off the pots and sinking them into the driveway or reclaiming more soil from brick. But at the moment I’m still deciding what’s gonna go where :)

@@Jay_Jay If I could leave my potted roses outside in the winter, I would definitely follow your example and put them in baseless pots. The soil in my pots becomes dry very quickly, today the temperature is 36 degrees! Because I live in zone 6b (I remember some winters when the temperature went down to minus 30 degrees Celsius, last year it was only minus 18, with very little snow unfortunately), I have to put the potted roses in the garage. To be precise, a pair of muscular arms has to do it for me. To sum up, the fewer roses I have in containers, the better. Cheers!

Yes it is sweet. Earth angel I’m not sure if that’s me doing something wrong but it appears perfectly healthy. Yes I think the Russians are big into roses. Some huge channels over there with big figures and fantastic gardens. But perhaps they do like the less subtle Rose on occasion. :)

Nice to hear your early impressions. Elizabeth is doing fantastic for me at the moment and still blooming her socks off although I'm not getting much scent so far but hopefully that will come. My first rose to be shovel pruned last week after eight years was Alibaba. Was a really hard decision as she blooms beautifully all summer until early December but the minute the foliage comes through it's covered in black spot. Not something I want on the arch at the front of the house. Chandos Beauty is a winner for fragrance every year for me. Glad to hear your are pleased with your Leonardo de Vinci....are you finding the blooms are lasting a really long time? Mine seem to hang on for ages.

Hi Netty. Yes Elizabeth I’m really pleased with. I’ve said already her fragrance can be moody but I promise you sooner or later you will get that strong fragrance. I’ve seen it twice now people have got back to me and agreed. But I think this year low overnight temps at this time of year are killing the fragrance on many of the roses. Well done for lasting 8 years!! I’m lucky to last one year:) too ruthless I know. Yes Leonardo flowers last a long time. Must be two weeks And in wet weather. Thanks Netty

Speaking of favourites. Last year I was smitten by the colour of Boscobel, so I got another. This year my first one was in its 2nd year and as of about 6 weeks ago I began to expect a few more blooms, a flush seemed out of the question ! So far I've had a handful of blooms and it looks like 'that's all she wrote' ! What's your experience with re-blooming with this rose ? It had min BS, no mildew, still got plenty of leaves just a meagre show of blooms after one decent flush. It's in full sun for half the day and gets plenty of morning sun and shelter.

Hi roontunes. I’m surprised to hear you say this. For me boscobel has been singing a fine tune this year. Plenty of blooms from 3 separate flushes and each flush has been as good as the first. As of today I’m seeing buds coming through for the next flush. The issue I’m seeing is the blooms are not really lasting in the blazing heat we have had this year. I did have a boscobel that I moved early this year to afternoon sun only and that one did not perform even half as well as the ones that had all morning sun. I’ve since donated that poorly performing boscobel to my mums house where it gets full morning sun and it’s burst into life.

Yep we had great weather here too, no tintawn lawns though, a few record 25c days but should have been a better show. Olivia in the same bed did wonderfully. Hi I use the red sacks of Westland I think they are Rose potting compost and John innes number 3 50/50 mix. Earth angel is racing up the table smelling fab this morning. I knew it had fragrance I’ve seen too many videos and read too many comments to think otherwise :) I hope your roses come on well. Hi Jay Jay, I'm quite a new subscriber to your channel and very much enjoying your video content. I also subscribe to another channel that gives general garden advice and I thought that you might appreciate my passing on an interesting piece of info as the lady interviewed Sarah Raven who has apparently been testing out growing salvias amongst roses ( something with peeked my interest as I grow alot of salvias and am just building my rose collection. Apparently Sarah has found this to be very favourable in respect of being a deterrent to fungal diseases such as black spot! 😁

Funny thing I’ve recently grown some Russian sage and salvias close to my Roald Dahl rose. (A few other wild flowers also.) I mention it in a previous video I believe when I talk of a floral graffiti. I wanted to let that area go a little wild but I’ve had to cut back that area because I suspect the rose couldn’t breathe. It got choked down and kinda got overwhelmed and black spot set in. Which for Roald Dahl is unheard of as far as I’m aware. But I will try and find the video, is it one of Sarah Ravens videos?

Oh and btw I’m growing some dwarf salvias out the front lane Infront of my row of roses there, I don’t know if you’ve seen them. I planted them because it was said to me that rabbits stay away from them. And our lane at night can be a little watership down like. So I planted several of them but they have taken off like wildfire. Looks fantastic but I will need to trim them back a little. Wether or not they keep the rabbits away I can’t be certain but I’ve had zero issues with rabbits so far.

Hi pb. Have you noticed this before in previous years also? The first flush of roses always tends to have the bigger actual flower, but subsequent flushes for me they are similar in size. For how long have your roses been potted? If it’s any length of time perhaps consider renewing the soil in winter time. I think at da they keep there roses potted for ten years before swapping them around but they have 2,3 or 4 roses planted per pot. Feeding or over feeding with an element might be an issue but have you noticed this in previous years and for how long have they been potted is my first question.

@@Jay_Jay Hi Jay - Well, actually, Uhm, I buy new roses every year....I've never over-wintered any rose before - this will be the first year that I will be doing this ....But in watching your videos, I was concerned to see how really small some of the blooms are, so I'm looking for the larger flowered DA's. The previous DA's I've grown in pots were a disappointment for me - the flowers were to small (Queen of Sweden, Heritage, Princess Alexandra of Kent). So, all of the (10) roses I am planting this Spring will in fact be kept and over-wintered for next year. My climate is very different from yours, as yours is a Maritime climate, so your winters are milder. I'm going to have to really wrap my pots very well to get them thru the winter here in Zone 7/New Jersey.

@@patrickbowen5398 wow. What did you do with the ..old roses? I’ve no doubt yours will be fine with a shelter to go in to keep the wind off. I’ve seen roses in harsh climates of Eastern Europe planted in the ground with a thick thick layer of mulch and a wrapping material around to keep the worst of the elements off and they seem to succeed very well come spring time. I know queen of Sweden hasn’t got large flowers, I’d put her flowers at the small to medium category at most.

@@Jay_Jay I discard the roses every year and buy new ones. All of my roses are grown in pots - so they will all have to be wrapped with bubble wrap and get burlap sacks put over them. I've just decided the expense of buying 10 new rose bushes every year is now no longer possible due to the rising cost of roses. This year the only two DA's I bought were Olivia Rose Austin and Golden Celebration - the other 8 roses are all Grandiflora, Hybrid Tea, and Floribunda's.

It's hard to judge climbers if theyre in pots. Their root systems are intended to be massive to support the water need alone for so many blooms.

All of my climbing roses now if potted are in baseless pots and I’m pretty sure this was the case when I made this video. So if you do see a potted climbing rose the bottom of the pot has been cut out so the roots can go down into the soil :)

Hi Anna. I’m not at home right now but you’re right the pots are very expensive. The more recent pots I have acquired are all much cheaper and smaller. Many of the pots I have are baseless pots meaning the bottom has been cut off so the roots can go down into the Earth. Some of the pots at the front of the driveway are cheap plastic pots costing about 12 pounds. The idea is I’m hoping to create a new bed in the next year or two and transfer those roses into a new bed. That said my aunt has many of these pots on her driveway also that have done ok for many years and she doesn’t prune roots or change the soil etc! They are not as big as they should be but they do ok. Last winter I checked the root balls on all my potted roses and they seemed all good except 2 that had gone mad and needed relocating. I’m sorry I can’t give you a garden centre that sells them cheap, I occasionally see sales on at some garden centres and grab them if I can but it’s still painful.

@@annaa9241 there are many advantages of baseless pots. Bunny Guineas done a great video on them. Basically the Rose won’t outgrow the pot. The roots will be free to go down into the soil as it ages. Worms will be free to come up into the pot and weave there magic inside the pot. Drainage won’t be a worry. And as it ages it won’t need as much water as a potted Rose. The rose will be elevated and even 12” may assist with companion planting around the base of the rose. An extra elevation may put a new rose in direct sunlight, if it was buried in the ground it may start off in shade. For the first year or three it will still be easily transportable if it’s decided the location is not great for that rose. You haven’t got to dig a hole. Handy if it’s at the base of a tree. If I don’t get my bed I will sink some of my pots straight into the driveway. But I suggest you watch bunny’s video she explains it far better than I. I think she points out old Chimpney stacks but it doesn’t help with price I’m afraid and all the benefits mentioned above doesn’t take away the huge cost of pots. Especially large ones. But you can get away with a smaller pot if you cut the bottom off. Space in a garden bed is of course better direct into the ground but sometimes a pot can help. I have another because a pesky outlet pipe is blocking a small patch of Earth. Not suitable for planting a rose but squeezing a pot in the gap elevated the rose above the pipe so there are advantages especially if your tight in space. Hope this helps. If you still want sizes I will get them for you but they are all different sizes. From huge to small.

What’s your opinion on Roald Dahl compared to the Lark Ascending? To me Emily Brontë ticks a lot of what is required for a shrub rose 😊 I am also considering ramblers for covering a wall… Ghislaine de Feligonde, the lasy of the lake or paul’s himalayan musk? Too many choices… 🤔

Hi there. Lark ascending I’ve nearly killed a few times but I’m sure it will survive a nuclear winter. Healthy and lovely. Good for the bees. Upright growth habit. Flowers always seem perfect. Mines is seeing its 3rd summer and I’m very happy with it. Zero fragrance. Flowers for me last 3 days to maybe 5 days at a push. Bit of rain and it won’t like it. Roald Dahl for me is similar, you won’t have to worry about health. Many flowers. For me repeats a little quicker than lark ascending. 2nd flush last year was very good. Flowers last a little longer on Roald but not by much. But don’t underestimate the beauty of larks flowers. Slightly better for me. But I only had RD a year. Both lovely you won’t go wrong. Either one is exceptionally good.

You do need a whole season to judge, don't you? And then the weather this year may favour a rose that you didn't enjoy last year - so maybe 2 or 3 seasons? And as you say age comes into it. As does where you plant a rose. I think I've mentioned before that I was so disappointed with a young DA rose I had in a pot that I was thinking about throwing it out, but now a few years later in a sunny spot in a bed it's a magnificent shrub. I could also mention the confusing factor of being sold roses which are the same name but slightly different shades - I have a pair of Dublin Bays that are not the same red, and an Alpine Sunset which has far more yellow in it than another. Asking us for our favourites of what you filmed - well, on that day, with the roses at that stage of growth - Emily Bronte, Spicy Parfuma and a feeling that Chippendale may be a contender in future years. In my garden Eustacia Vye would easily make the grade at the moment. I also have a 1st year Lady Of Shalott in a large pot which is about to burst into flower - I have earmarked a spot for her in my garden if I am suitably impressed.

Absolutely right nik. Yes planting in a pot first every time for me. Only once you know everything is good then find the suitable place in the ground. Yes it takes time especially in my garden with so many new roses. It would be no easier a decision if I had a mature rose garden I’m sure. So many roses I didn’t even film or mention. Can’t believe I forgot Gertrude! On the day yes I agree with you. All magnificent roses. Spicy I think is only coming up to a year old but at least I’ve seen her grow and develop so perhaps the emotional connection is there. Or maybe my decision is difficult enough it’s easier to rule out the other two. :) yea different seasons can benefit one rose over another. Like wine we can have vintage years for roses perhaps but I’m not sure we can tell just yet. And then of course throw in the same variety planted a few feet away but doing twice as well as one that’s much older! It all gets very difficult :)

All roses appear healthy and beautiful. One of rose among Boscobel, Earth angel and Bliss Parfuma will be winner, if we consider only bloom form. Poet’s Wife, Emily Bronte and Olivia have signature DA colour and stunning looks. Kordes roses have beautiful foliage but foliage of GJ, Olivia and Emily Bronte are equally beautiful. You have many climbers. I personally feel apart from rose of the year, it would be great if you let us know your best roses in respect of bloom form, vigour, fragrance. Haha I will let you know my friend. So far I can say the foliage of GJ isn’t great. Perfect for the month of may beginning of June but for me the foliage takes abit of a knock after that, but that’s ok for me. She makes up for it. I can also say as of now my favourite photo this year of a rose flower was bliss Parfuma. And she’s only given me 3! Beautiful. Ive said already I won’t be including Jasmina this year but I’m told she climbs very well. And if she does wow. So maybe take a look at her. For me..powerful fragrance and very nice flowers. Eden I love. Fantastic flowers but all too young for me but some ace ones to look at on yt. I love Amadeus but I need to see my others before I can decide.

@@Jay_Jay I agree with your observations. Bliss Parfuma and Eden recently added to my collection. I have to see how they fair in coming days. Jasmina is very robust large flowered climber and has fragrance too. Mine has completed one year and grown very well so far.

Royal Parfuma?!! I bought that as it is classed as a great cut flower. Well, it has finally flowered, and the cut flowers didn't last even 18 hours before dropping every petal indoors. Rubbish. This sort of thing really annoys me as I just don't have room for flowers that shatter, unless I choose them for their looks, such as Eustacia Vye. My list of flowers that aren't cutting it this year is quite large, but my over sheltered garden doesn't help. One clear outstanding rose though, for sheer amount of continual blooms and utter pain free management, has been Julia Child/Absolutely Fabulous. I will buy more of these next year as they are a cheerful delight.

Hi parfaitamour sorry to hear about your roses but I know where your coming from. What I can say is my royal Parfuma has given me a few flowers so far this year and whilst I haven’t cut them I thought I got decent(ish) duration out of them on the bush. Over a week and still good if I recall. Ab Fab I saw at the garden centre last week and had a great fragrance one of the few roses to shine in that department. Looked fantastic But I walked away with Audrey Wilcox a rose I’d never heard of.

@@Jay_Jay Ah yes, I visited when we went to Mote Park. I 'accidently' acquired Ascot & Joie de Vie, and Saphir, which is a very unusual colour. Ascot has to be painted, not sure about the other two yet. They had a lot less choice than last year, they've sold out more varieties quicker there. I saw AW too!

I have all the Timeless roses and none of them have staining like this. They look amazing even after rain or hot sun. I think what you have might be caused by something else, like a nutrient deficiency.

Interesting Claire and I think some gravity in what you say. I think many roses can occasionally stain or discolour a little like this in wet weather but this is a major colour pigmentation. None of my other roses have suffered this and it only appears to have touched timeless pink and charisma with pink being the one to suffer most. I have treated them the exact same way as my other roses I will see how the rest of the user treats them. But they are pushing out the flowers no problem. Thanks for letting me know.
