Oh my god I thought I knew how it worked but it was so much simpler than I thought it was... It makes so much sense now! Also, though I, too, sometimes get polyrhythm and polymeter mixed up, I'm almost certain that this is an example of polymeter, not polyrhythm. Awesome video, though!

I'm not a drummer but I have been trying to figure this line out for access so I'm so happy someone finally tackled it! I have a question though: why did you choose 3/4 for the time sig? Wouldn't it be easier to count and feel if you were to think of it as 6/8? I'm finding it difficult to keep with the rhythm by thinking in quarter rather than eighth notes, especially at the speed they play.

Hi man is a great explanation with funny clever visuals, and I like every par of it, you have a new sub 🤘🏼 A little comment about the "3 against 5 thing" I think it falls into polymeter more than polyrhythm (correct me if I'm wrong) of course if there's a polymeter, then there will be a polyrhythm implied it's a little tricky but I think it is a Polymeter. I'm a composer and I've been using both polyrhythm and polymeter in my compositions and arrangements also I challenge myself to "unlock" all polyrhythms from 2:3 to 7:11 👌🏼 Again is a great work, I'll be watching it 🤘🏼🤘🏼
@YogevGabay4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot man! The polymeter vs polyrhythm issue is one I will address soon. I was brought up in Israel, and we never used the term polymeter, for anything. And then, when I stumbled upon it for the first time it made no sense to me hahahaha but I will make a video about it, I'm curious what people have to say!
4 жыл бұрын
@@YogevGabay I know what you mean, I'm from México and I didn't know about this term during my time in school, and now that you say it I haven't heard it from any musician I've come across, I knew it was an actual term in a KZbin video and I wasn't looking for it 😂 (maybe is a Berkeley thing, I don't know).
@samwise25883 жыл бұрын
I'd like to hear some explanation of the Bridge section of the title-track 'Lateralus.' Maybe it's just the phrasing/part writing, but that drum groove hits different. I know for sure the cymbal flourishes leading into the section are polyrhythmic, but that's about it.

Yogev, I now see this was your first video breakdown of one of my favorite songs from Tool. And maybe the coolest section of it. If not, could you explain the section which starts here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5_PmYmMrKeZm9k and lasts some 9 seconds. Actually the song completely magnetizes my attention. So it helps me pay attention but I also noticed how you broke down the song in theory in a practical understandable manner. so, I'm having a hard time with this one, because I cannot NOT read the notation at the end. and although the snare and kick clearly play the same beat on bars 2 and 3, the notation puts the kick right after the snare. is it a mistake, or am I not getting something?
@YogevGabay4 жыл бұрын
No no, you're right. Bars 2 and 3 have a kick drum in unison with the snare, and that kick you see after is the beginning of the next cycle. Makes sense?
