This is lovely. My family moved to Birmingham when I was 9, but even before that we’d regularly visit my nan who lived in the Black Country, so I was very familiar with a lot of the filming locations. I used to go to Merry Hill with my friends a lot, so the Supermarket episode makes me feel nostalgic. Fun fact: The Elmore Mall from The Amazing World of Gumball is a CGI recreation of Merry Hill. I now live in London, but I had to go back to Brum for a hospital appointment last week, and I took a walk along the canal and passed the Old Turn Junction. Thank you for the nostalgia trip. This show was very special to me, and it holds up well. It was funny and wholesome, and John Cunliffe had such a kind, calming demeanour. I was very sad when he died.

John culiffe was my friends uncle. Such a nice bloke. He used to own a music shop. My mum bought a ukulele from him which i still own to this day.

Yes, yes, yes! As a huge Ragdoll Productions fan, I absolutely love this! Real locations from my home county was always one of the highlights in a R+J episode! One cool bit of trivia: in the Rosie and Jim Poetry tape narrated by John Cunliffe, he mentions the construction going on around Brindley Place in the Lock episode. Ofcourse those of us local to Birmingham will know how much it has developed into the attractive, upmarket place it turned into from the mere barron foundations seen in the episode..! Thank you for your work on this. I hope there will be more Rosie and Jim videos like this one in the future :)

I didn't realise it was filmed 100 yards from my house in Wordsley at the glass cone. The main factory was demolished about 1999, just leaving the cone and a few buildings by the canal.
@JacksThrowbackAttack
@JacksThrowbackAttack 15 күн бұрын
I did wonder where the glass making would've been as I had a look around all the little craft shops dotted about and the displays of glass making equipment and couldn't see it. Makes sense now you've explained that bit was demolished.

I loved the Ragdoll shop, being a Brummie myself, when we visited Stratford we always had to visit the shop. One of my favourite parts was the Rosie and Jim boat that you could sit in and watch episodes, me and my sister could have stayed there all day! This was really interesting, i might visit someone of the locations myself.
@JacksThrowbackAttack

Yes I visited the shop a few times when I was a kid, it's a shame there's not many photos or footage of it online. I have a vague recollection of what was dotted about.
@alexwells6876
@alexwells6876 10 күн бұрын
@@JacksThrowbackAttack Yeah, i think that promotional video for the shop is one of the only bits of footage online. I know there was also the Tots TV section which had 3 telephones i think? You could "call" each character. But like you, it's very vague.
@JacksThrowbackAttack
@JacksThrowbackAttack 10 күн бұрын
@@alexwells6876 There is some footage in the BBC Teletubbies Documentary from 1998 which is on KZbin. Yeah the three telephones, each one played the theme music from a different show (one for Tots TV, one for Rosie and Jim and one for Brum) and there were coloured postboxes you could put drawings in. I seem to remember there was a little outside bit with a painting of Donkey in his shed on the wall. There was also a mini Teletubby land as well. The very last time I visited they had a section dedicated to Boobah as that was the new big show at the time.

@JacksThrowbackAttack
@JacksThrowbackAttack 14 күн бұрын
It would've been composed by Andrew McCrorie-Shand who did the theme music, he composed pretty much all the music throughout Rosie and Jim as well as a lot of Ragdoll's programmes. Sadly no public release.

The engine house down on Netheron canal had a steam engine in it, it is on display in America as far as I know, the area is where my Nan and Grandad used to live at and I remember walking along the canal when I was a kid.

I did look in to that one, the simple reason I didn't include it is because it's no longer a shop, it's been converted to private housing.

Thank you :) I really enjoyed your video. I grew up on the British Inland Waterways, living in canal boats from the early 70’s but we never ‘did’ Birmingham. Anyone know what happened to the Ragdoll? Anybody seen her? It’s unlikely her name will have changed as that’s one of the strongest sailor superstitions (I can’t remember the reasoning) to never change the name of a boat. She looks about 55 feet, lovely girl :)

The Ragdoll Boat still exists, it was found a few years ago in dry dock and has since been returned to the water. It appears to be in private ownership now. It has been modified and repainted so it's hard to spot. It's still green and red but all of the identifying Ragdoll signage has been removed sadly. There's a few videos on youtube and some pictures online of how it looks recently.

In the Series 2 episode ''Hats''' which canal near Birmingham does John lose his hat in? I would love to find that filming location. Also love the video, I hope you do a second one of Rosie and Jim filming locations. Because one of my favourite episodes from Series 1 which is ''Steam''' where John accidently runs the Ragdoll aground on some mud. A scene with a steam engine on the Seven Valley Railway is shown, but the river doesn't run alongside that part of the line only going under the bridge which the Ragdoll isn't seen doing so. Which means a bit of trick filming which is worth mentioning. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIq8qI2QeJ6hpbM Ps here's the link to the ''Steam''' episode.
