in this video tutorial, I demonstrate how to decorate a two tier cake themed to Thomas the Tank engine using fondant, buttercream and Thomas the tank engine figurines. This is a very detailed cake, although don't let the aesthetics fool you, this cake is much easier to make than it looks! You may just need to set aside 2 to 3 hours decorating time.

Buttercream recipe:
120 grams butter
200 grams icing sugar
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 to 1 tsp milk
(if it isi easier for you, you can even just combine the butter with the sugar until you have reached the desired consistency without including the milk or vanilla as I did. Only because it's a very minimal amount going on the outside and nobody will eat it).
Divide the buttercream into two bowls and colour one using green gel food colour for the grass. Leave the other buttercream as is or even add white food colouring, as this portion will be used to create the clouds.
The cake was decorated using fodant. For the stand alone decorations, like the number 2, I combined gumpase with the fondant as gumpaste is much more stable, dries quicker and is easier to work with. I also added tylose powder to the mix, and this helps the gumpaste / fondant mixture to dry much quicker.
Thank you guys for watching! And I will see you Tuesday :)

Hi Rosie I made my cake and it turned out a treat. I did a jungle theme using your style and techniques. Loved the saving of fondant when doing the cake board. The mistakes I made were minimal and I learnt a lot from them. Wish you could see it you have a very proud student here.

Dear Rosie Can i make the whole cake( completely with all the decorations) a day before and keep it in the fridge or no? I've heard not to put fondant cake in fridge but I don't know how to manage to decorate this cake in the party day.
@Rosiesdessertspot
@Rosiesdessertspot 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +moein izadi, it depends on the filling of the cake. If you are using buttercream or ganache and covering your cake in fondant, then it's safe to stay out of the fridge overnight without problems. If you have perishable fillings like fresh fruit or cream, then the cake needs to go into the fridge. I put my fondant covered cakes in the fridge all the time haha. They sweat, but after an hour or so at room temperature that moisture dissapears. If you have very thin fondant deails on your cake then they might wilt. But this cake with these decorations won't be an issue.

+Christina Valentin hmm I think a Mud would go really well, especially if you are making a tiered cake. Or like a caramel mud.. Really anything that tastes nice with chocolate :) something dense would go well under fondant. No soft sponges basically.

Hi, I would suggest making these on the same day as you need them to be flexible to wrap around the cake. if you let them dry they might sit odly. the rocks on the otherhand will be fine to make a week in advance :)

hi hun, yes you can make this ahead of time depending on the cake flavour you are going for :) mud cakes tend to last the longest. I think you are right, making it yourself and colouring it yourself with gel food colour would be the most cost effective route. Best of luck with it :D

if there are no perishable fillings (i.e, fresh cream or fruits) then you can keep this at room temperature :) Fondant tends to sweat in the fridge, but you can avoid this by placing your cake in a air tight box / container.
