Lovely poetic melody - just wonder how it's possible to tune the instrument ...!

The sympathetic strings are tuned to the notes of the composition. Similar to a Sitar, Sarode, Sarangi etc... The main playing strings can be tuned a number of different ways, 4ths, 5ths, as far as I know his low and high strings are both tuned to D on this instrument. As a beginner, you would tune the sympathetic strings with a tuner, then to a drone note as you progress, then finally by ear, hearing the notes of the song in your head. This Nak Tarhu looks like it has a lot of strings, 17 if I am counting correctly, but most Sarangi have between 30-40 strings. It sounds difficult, but in reality, you only need to fine tune the instrument once it is at pitch and then tune a few strings to match the composition. A good example of this process can be seen at the beginning of most Indian classical music concerts, but I notice Ali Akbar Khan does it in a way that is easy to follow.
