The nyckelharpa is a bowed instrument, originally built and played in Sweden. Dating back to the seventeenth century, but it is still very common in traditional Swedish folk music

Unbelievable! At first sight, I believe there is an incredible tension on the strings and over the body of this marvel. The lower bridge is soooo strong. Fascinating.

@felicegreece OK. If one has the talent and ability to learn string fingering (which after 77 years, I do not), then perhaps this woukd seem silly to you, especially if you can play a stringed instrument. However, comma, this application would make it easier for a keyboard artist to scratch out a melody on a fiddle. I can play the Hell out of 'most any keyboard from a 7 manual organ (Think Atlantic City - I've played it) through pianos, accordions and melodicas. But something that needs bowing, blowing or stumming? Nope.

@@philippefritsch1892 Because music is His creation. We use this material (music) without acknowledging the author of it? When properly used, it will inevitably testify of God because the beauty that is built within it will manifest of the glorious Creator of it. Chaconne in D minor is arguably one of the most complex and hard to play of Bach's violin partitas - on the violin for which it is originally written, it is hard and virtuosic enough - and yet you, sir, play it on the nyckleharp with such great nuance and ability! It is a flawless interpretation from a musician of great ability!

The ingenious nickelharpa, to me is like an instrument made for by or for pianist/keyboardist who didn't want to spend the years it takes to develop the perfect intonation necessary to sound good on the violin. What a great instrument. Always wanted one.
@RichardWagner-hi4znАй бұрын
I doubt this instrument allows you to play well after a few months only. And it has the same disadvantages as the arpeggione.
@PaulHofreiter25 күн бұрын
It would definitely present challenges that have a difficulty equal to intonation practice, to play it well and at this level at least. Even though it might not seem this way, gut strings with key mechanisms like this require a lot of sensitivity and nuance to play.
I had never seen a nyckelharpa & clicked out of curiosity, but after that performance I ended up subscribing - bravo!

I had never heard this instrument, one that gives orchestral heft to the pith of a solo violin. This is one of the most impressive performaces that I have ever heard of the Chaconne, a moement that usually puts a violin to its limit. Add to this it seems effortless. Should I be called to the orchesta of angels (I'm 68 and I know the nath and biology all too well for my comfort) then this is the instrument that I want to play.

What a cool instrument! It seems to have the same principle as the Hurdy Gurdy, with the exception that the player is bowing the strings himself instead of turning a crank... This is a great example of the kind of popular music that must’ve been circulating around in the Early Baroque; in the cafes, the salons. You know, where the Regular Folks would hang. Even though this piece obviously wasn’t written for “Bowed Nickelharpa”, it works So Well it’s easy to imagine that’s what it was originally scored for. For some reason it makes me wonder what sort of stuff JSB would come up with when he was just Fooling Around. Excellent Rendition ! 👍🏼

I was a little surprised, although pleased, when I discovered this video since I had independently come up with a design for an instrument which is very similar to the nyckelharpa in concept, although not so much in design. Still, it's likely that my design would have evolved into something very similar, given the practicalities of the concept. It's actually a bit of a relief to know that this instrument exists and I don't need to work so hard to develop my idea since it wouldn't add as much as I originally thought it might to the musical landscape. For reference, my design was more like a crossover between the nyckelharpa and a hurdi-gurdi, but with independent wheels for each string and with the wheels moved against each string - or vice-versa - by the pressing of a key for that string. This would have allowed the strings on my instrument to be plucked as well as vibrated, giving two independent sounds for the same instrument. It would also have had more strings, possibly with some dedicated to the "plucked" sound and some dedicated to the "vibrated" sound. Lastly, the keys would have been double-action with one action being momentary and the other being locked in place, so that some strings could be "droned" like on a hurdi-gurdi.
