My first night was in Durham prison, in 1964. I got there about 11pm and was put in a cell with some blankets and a jug of water, All the night noises, gates clanging, people yelling out the windows, then as it settled down, people screaming and calling out with, I assumed, nightmares. Some years later, on my third or fourth visit, I saw Ian Brady, on his own, in a separate exercise yard. I was in Wormwood Scrubs when George Blake, the spy, escaped. They changed all the officers after that. Prison wasn't a great place but there are worse. To some it is better than being outside in a bitter UK winter. Keep to yourself, don't borrow or lend, if someone starts don't hesitate, get stuck in as hard as you can. Yes, you may get done but next time they'll hesitate and pick on someone else.

Belmarsh even broke Nicholas van Hoogstraten. He ended up training as a samaritan while inside and said he had real sympathy for anyone sent there. Even when he was released on appeal he looked broken and wouldn't talk to the media for a while. If you know what that man is like, you'll know how utterly out of character that is.
