My brother has been in HMP Belmarsh twice now, he is currently in there now. He speaks to us once a week for 10 minutes he always tells us there’s new staff constantly in and out everyday!! He says some of the staff he has witnessed swearing at them, hitting inmates and it’s horrific. The feel when you walk in there to visit your relatives is such a dull and sad place to be. It’s horrific and no way should it only be a 9 week training placement!!! More like about 4-5 years!!!

Never been personally but a lot of my friends have been somewhat regulars in the UK prison system so Ive heard many stories and staff retention is a massive problem. Its a very them and us attitude and staff are the enemy and are often the target of hate and violence. Sure though staff have without a doubt commited their own lets say sins within prison. Frankly swearing in prison is pretty normal and although not a respectful and definetly not a professional way for a member of staff to behave. Right now I think we need to staff with the big problems so spice, violence, staff retention, staffs role in contraband which I find it hard to believe plenty are not bringing in phones/drugs. I do think this training is likely better than what most get given this is being shown to TV only makes sense they would go the extra mile for PR which is only understandable

I come from a middle class background but a good portion of my mates from the town over were repeat visitors and I am the first to call them out on bs and excuses but nor am I blind to just how difficult it is for them to get back into the "normal" world. It is literally criminal to release so many with no housing, poor support and statisics tell us that much of our prison population suffers from mental health. I believe in punishment for crimes Im known to be someone who will tell even friends exactly what I think good or bad but I realise that whereas we claim its about rehabilitation in reality it really isnt. A good example is one friend been back 20+ times just finished doing a 7 and for the first time ever he actually got some ok support its still lacking but it took 20 prison visits, a 7 year sentence & 100s of arrests for us to put some proper reform steps into action

It’s like going into teaching or social work and not having a liking for children, or being a criminal defence lawyer and not wanting to defend someone who has committed the heinous crimes, simply because it doesn’t agree with your moral code. I'm aghast at the one woman's attitude towards attire. A dress or skirt in a men's prison?, Seriously, she's not the type for this and would be a danger to herself and her fellow guards, I'm sure it proved out.This is where the interview process would have weeded out someone not suited. Pennywise, pound foolish. When we have criminals who are extremely violent and determined to use any opportunity to cause harm or escape, we must use every tool in the box mentally and physically to keep us all safe, including the prisoners.

I understand the effort to try to add different kinds of people to the prison staff, but it sounds condescending towards the recruits that they took a lot of the process of hiring away, as if a minority couldn’t pass it. I doubt that. And the lack of an interview is disturbing to me. I’ve never gone through a hiring process without an interview, even when I was a kid working at KFC, and here they are putting these recruits in a difficult job where they have to interact with the worst of the worst and put their lives on the line without knowing important things about them. My ex brother in law came from Mexico when he was 19 and he was hired at a prison in Arizona. He went through psychological testing, intellectual testing, physical testing, in depth interviews because he would be dealing with dangerous people and they wanted to make sure he could hold up in every way and do his job. Also, they didn’t want to hire weak minded people who might be manipulated by prisoners. My ex-brother in law, a minority, passed with flying colors and was hired and did an excellent job all the years he was there. I think skirting the process could allow in people who might not be suited for the job even if they are nice people. Those nice people could end up in danger and put other officers and inmates at risk. I believe that some prisoners will exploit weakness wherever they can find it. Race doesn’t matter a bit in getting the most qualified candidates, it’s ability that matters and I think they can find ability across the racial spectrum. Maybe they could have done more targeted recruiting without getting rid of certain qualifications. I guess time will tell how this works out.

How narrow minded is your comment, I've served time and theres some very kind and decent people who just made mistakes or bad choices, maybe didn't have the right guidance. You really need to broaden your mind. For example my crime did society a favour, the judge, screws and inmates agreed but rules are rules and two wrongs don't make a right so i happily served my time with my head held high.

I was on remand in Thameside, which is next door to Belmarsh. Thameside is a private prison, Serco I believe, or it was in January 2015 when I was in there for 2 weeks. I was acquitted by the way. Thameside was very easy but everything seemed to be OK in there. I never had any problems. I think the fact that you've got your own phone, computer, shower and toilet in your cell makes it run a lot better. Not sure about Belmarsh. A friend was in there and said it was tough sometimes. I certainly didn't know that prisoners arrived at prison from court on a Sunday either. I wouldn't like to be kept in the sweat box for hours. I spent a month in Brixton prison in December 2009, for breach of probation. That was not too bad, but Thameside was much better, in terms of the state of the living conditions and stuff to do.

The first day I entered belmarsh just the differency in scenery made it seem like a dungeon. Old falling apart interior compared to thamesides sleek and new design. Glad to say those days are long behind me.

If you make thing hard with the screws they will do the same to you, so it would be counter productive to do said actions.

Here in Michigan, USA government officials usually aren't sworn in on a holy book but if one is legally necessary it is the Christian Bible or nothing, I bet almost no one in my home county has ever heard of the Bhagavad Gita. I had to take an oath of office while I was a consultant for my home county, no holy book was even offered. I didn't know that I had to take an oath of office until the Sheriff was showing me around then took me to see the county clerk (who I already knew -- this is a low population county where everyone knows almost everyone else) so I didn't bring my copy of the Christian Bible.

I am trying to figure out why they lie about the number of different ethnic guard's, when like the US, they can't find enough people to even be a guard. I saw one where reggie yates went into a jail to be a correction officer for a week, and they were all having to work over time, and were still short on guard's. I saw one with uk guard's who worked long hour's as well. The guard's did say they worry about their family being attacked by a gang member inside putting a hit out on them. Most of the community felt like if you became a prison guard, that you were hating on your own people. Most of the problem from the guard's i know, is that this next generation of younger offenders are more dangerous, and ready to assault guard's or inmates because they have grown up on the street's without parent's, or their parent's are locked up, so offenders start the criminal path earlier, and drink and do drug's much earlier in life. There are many pillars of our communities that have had poor parents or abusive childhoods. The trouble is that the world is too politically correct and woke. I had a tough childhood but my parents did love and try with me. I just didn't give a toss and thought I knew best. I thought the world owed me a living. I had to learn the hard way. I did 3 months in Belmarsh in 2016 and a new starter had her face slashed. By the time i finished my sentence in a low security cat c prison 5 months ago they are hiring teenagers, young boys and girls some with bad attitudes who end up getting batterd and never come back. They have a university program where students come and serve as screws on the wings as part of there degrees. The old hands get pushed out by the youngsters who form clicks. This is quite old as theres still smoking.

They are in the UK they are in the UK by choice therefore they should abide by UK laws, if they transgress they should expect to serve UK time, if you go to Saudi Arabia and fall foul of the law you will have to serve time according to their laws, so why do we not follow the same rules, oh yeah, we are too tolerant.

Pentonville is rough then bellmarsh , tottenham and woodgreen running the prison in pentonville
