this guy is utterly amazing, feels like he has a general plot but then goes way off and is just confused by his own nonsense at times and is still entertained by it. gotta love him

I'm an American, trying to learn UK regional dialects. Is Ross a typical Geordie? I rarely hear Geordie accents, mostly in Billy Elliot The Musical. UK fans of Billy Elliot say they do the Geordie accent perfectly in that show, but to me they sound nothing like Ross Noble. Is Ross a more typical Geordie? Thanks :)
@shaWnCross666
@shaWnCross666 2 жыл бұрын
Ross is Northumberland ( a few miles north or Newcastle) and funnily enough Billy Elliott is set in a village called Easington ( about 2 miles from where I live ) and the accents are so wrong the would have a more sunderland accent and not geordie at all

For geordie look at videos of auf wiedersehen pet. There are some good geordie accents in that
@beenaplumber8379
@beenaplumber8379 2 жыл бұрын
@@shaWnCross666 (Thank you, and sorry for the long response!) It's amazing how much difference a short distance can make in regional accents in Britain! I looked at a little bit of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (thanks for the tip!), and I'll probably be watching at least one series soon, maybe binge-watching all of it when I'm done with QI. That looks like a good way to learn Geordie-speech, and it's a comic drama I haven't heard of before. (I've worked in theater off-and-on for many years, and I always love it when the dialect coaches come around and work with the cast. I do the music, not acting, but I'm fascinated by it.) The accent I hear in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet sounds more to me like the one they used in Billy Elliot the Musical. (The original 2000 film is a little more random, to my ear.) I looked on the map and found Easington and Sunderland, and to me they look so close to Newcastle it's surprising they have different regional accents. I'm from Minnesota, and you have to go to rural Iowa to find a seriously different regional accent, maybe 150 miles from where I live, and that accent is similar to Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas. Wisconsin and the Dakotas have their peculiarities, but we can all pass as being from either of those 4 states (including Minnesota). Between Boston and Philadelphia there are tons of micro-dialects, with New York City having distinct accents for some individual neighborhoods & boroughs, but isn't London like that? And we also have what I think is unique - African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) - a dialect found across the country, with regional flavors, but very consistent across such a widespread and diverse population. I think one choice they made in Billy Elliot was that the story was not set in Easington originally, but in a made-up coal town near Newcastle called Everington where they speak Geordie. In the film, Easington became their filming location, but they maintained the fiction that it was elsewhere. In the stage play (which I really love) they just set it in Easington and I guess they kept the Geordie speech because it fit the story.

@@beenaplumber8379 interestingly I have a great friend who moved from minnesota to sunderland at 13 (were 36 now) his accent is all kinds of messed up. The regional accents in the UK are so varied in some city's even down to different zip codes have different nuances and colloquialisms. I'm a theatre enthusiast myself ( amateur) and I also love language

@@rosscoghlan Exactly. He's been through so much since the beginning of his career-- always sleepwalking and nightmares BEFORE nearly losing his family in the bushfire and ACTUALLY losing everything they owned except the clothes on their backs, plus friends and neighbors who died, all way before the pandemic. I think he's got more right than a lot of us to put on a little stress weight. His color is good and his energy is high (I've seen him push through shows while actively ill). I think he looks better here than when he was thin and exhausted. Hope he's around for many years to come.
