Just had open heart surgery with Dr Stelzer. He is most wonderful. I had severe regurgitation and a highly damaged aortic valve. Was not able to have the Ross Procedure since my other valve was leaking In addition he removed an aortic aneurysm. What I ended up having was a BioBental with a Bovine Pericardial Valve put in to replace my aortic valve. 95 days since the surgery at Mt Sinai which was on July 20, 2022 and I feel amazing I am 67 years old. Dr Stelzer is the best!

Can you run now? Most patients can return to an active lifestyle after a Ross Procedure. But, you may want to discuss this with your medical team.

I had the Ross Procedure done in Oklahoma City. Mechanical valves require coumadin for life....how does warfarin allow for quality life? I am now 68 and it's worked well for me, had the procedure done in my early 50's. My first open heart was at the age of 10 in Columbus Ohio, they repaired the Aortic Valve, my second was at Walter Reed in D.C. they gave me a pig valve. Ross Procedure Advantages While the Ross Procedure is a very complex procedure, the benefits of this type of valve replacement appear to weigh heavily on the plus side. There is less need for mandatory use of life-long anticoagulants. The autograft can grow with children. The autograft is live tissue that can communicate with other cells in the body. There is longer (20+ years) documented freedom from cardiac-related death or reintervention versus mechanical valve replacement. Studies also show a reduced incidence of stroke and post-operative bleeding. Patients reported a better quality of life years after aortic valve replacement utilizing the Ross Procedure.

What is the possibilty of using the donor valve in the aortic position instead of the pulmonary valve?
@HeartValveSurgery
@HeartValveSurgery 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, Yes, that is known as a homograft valve replacement. We are not sure how much that is done these days. Most stand-alone tissue valve replacements are either made from cows or pigs. That said, here is a story you might appreciate about a homograft - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/heart-surgery-blog/2008/08/05/video-aortic-valve-replacement-with-homograft-by-dr-kevin-accola/. Hope that helps!!!

Also, what repercussions does the procedure cause to the pulmonary valve? Is there a chance of rejection in the replaced pulmonary valve?

I’m 31 years and undergoing open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve for the first time in my life. I’m nervous about which approach to pick. I think Ross procedure would be great because of its durability and I want to have children but also now you risk the potential of two leaking valve . The tissue valve is great too but can only last 10 years . What do you guys think? My cardiologist actually said he wouldn’t recommend Ross because of it’s risk but my surgeon recommended it for me

Hi did you ever get the Ross procedure done? If so how are you doing? I have an enlarged aortic valve due to having a bicuspid valve. I am very scared to under go surgery. I am 43 and just found out I had it last year, I got very sick last year due to influenza b, pneumonia, streptococcus and septic shock...doctors saying is a miracle I am still on this earth, and now I am all stressed out again about this. Hope you are well.

“Its use has declined considerably in the United States because of the technical complexity of the procedure and the incidence of late postoperative aortic root dilation and autograft failure with AR. There is also a low incidence of pulmonary homograft stenosis” Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine(20th)
