I live in GA and Atlanta has grown so much, I pretty much stay away from there, unless I have to be there. It’s beautiful, but crazy busy. I live about 1.5 hours from ATL, I honestly feel like it’s not even Georgia 😂. It’s lost it’s Southern Charm I suppose. Lots of cool stuff to do and see but I prefer nature to the city. My mom is from CA. I think that Southern CA and Northern CA are so different from each other. I prefer Northern California. It’s so beautiful and the people seem more chill. I have never been to NY or OH. North Carolina is beautiful. I lived there for about 1.5 years. Each place is definitely very different. Anyway, it was fun watching this.

So, ppl don't get confused upstate New Yorkers don't have that (New Yawkah) NYC metropolitan accent. Buffalo, NY's regional accent belongs to the Rust belt Northern city vowels shift family of accents. (Chicago, Buffalo, Rochester, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Detroit, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids etc). It's the same how Erie, Scranton, and Pittsburgh talk nothing like we do in Philly only South Jersey does. Lol

To be clear, most Californians don't come off as Surfers or Valley Girls. That's primarily NW Los Angeles, The San Fernando Valley (Burbank and Universal Studios in Hollywood), Ventura County, and Malibu. Here are some good examples of what most Californians sound like: Politicians Xavier Becerra (Head of Health and Human Services for Biden) and Kamala Harris (US Vice President) NFL players Sam Darnold, Jared Goff, and Brandin Cooks. Various rappers like E40, Mac Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Nef The Pharaoh, Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, The Game, etc Country Singer Merle Haggard Rock bands like Rancid, Blink 182, Green Day, Linkin Park, Metallica, AFI, Korn, and The Offspring. Note: California's a big state so each person/group I put here comes from different areas and ethnic backgrounds known for their very specific accents. The differences are subtle but you can catch them if you pay attention.

NY: The way they say coffee in the beginning of the word sounds like Dutch, koffie. Also the Dutch are known to be blunt/frank/harsh just pointing this out because they don't make the historic connection with New Amsterdam aka New York beginning as a Dutch colony.

There's a book by Colin Woodard called The 11 American Nations that talks about the cultural suprastates that retain elements of the culture that initially colonized it. The NY/NJ/Connecticut area is called New Amsterdam and still retains some Dutchness to their culture.

@@Ivan-fm4eh Thank you for the info/book referral. 11 Nations? Originally colonized, 11? There were the French, Spanish, British, Dutch, Portuguese... or are we going longer than "originally" with German and Sweden? Or are we going further back with Leif Erikson & Greenland, New Foundland, etc. I thought NYC was New Amsterdam and the area was New Netherlands, Nieuw Nederland. New Yorkers are honest we don't do fake politeness and talk behind people's backs. It can come across as aggressive or rude sometimes to people not from here. Also, hardly anyone speaks in that accent they were doing, the girl from New York is right.
@word42069
@word42069 Жыл бұрын
Most of the people who talked like that (typical NYC accent you hear in black & white films and gangster films) moved out of NYC in the 60s, 70s, & 80s when the city was in disarray and people who could afford to moved out. Most of them settled in the suburbs of the “tri-state area” (NJ, NY, & CT). Hence why places like New Jersey and Long Island have a lot of Italian American and Irish American diaspora. For example my Mom’s side of the family was an old NYC family with strong roots in SoHo & Brooklyn. In the 1960s the city seized their entire block via “eminent domain” and they moved to LI then NJ. People refer to it as “white flight” but a lot of it was also forced relocation. That combined with ever increasing costs of living and a vast insurgence of people moving in and gentrifying neighborhoods since the late 90s is why NYC doesn’t have a lot of “old school New Yorkers” anymore and sounds and feels more and more just like a global city.

I knew a bunch of people from Ohio in Florida. The old ones retire on the Gulf coast like Tampa, Sarasota, etc. The young ones go where the jobs are. And they party hard! There's really three different Floridas: South Florida. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, The keys. Crowded, over-populated. Central Florida. Disney World, Lego Land, Busch Gardens, and other tourist traps. Then the rest, what I call "Red State" like North Florida and rural parts of Central Florida. Where time feels like it stands still. Funny, that I knew a couple of people from ATL that moved, and they bought houses in "East Cobb" to rent or flip, while they "living the life" down in South Florida.

My observation of stereotypes. Ohio- Lots of jokes about Ohio especially Cleveland being a miserable place. New York - people have a reputation for being blunt, unfriendly, step on your body if you were bleeding in the street, obnoxious and bark worse than their bite. I have literally heard them announce “I’m from New Yawk” as if they think anyone cares. Georgia- Depends on ATL or state as a whole. ATL faux famous people, BBLs, crazy traffic The rest of Georgia- rednecks Florida- Panhandle is Lower Alabama. South - Cuba part 2 Plus alligators, tourists, retirees, weird political drama and crazy people. California- mixed bag. Hollywood fake and plastic. The Chicanos Other minorities The rural farming people The health nut, tree hugging hippies The very liberal people North Carolina- rarely discussed as a topic of conversation other than college sports.

Oregon for stereotypes. You will see like hippies and stuff ig especially in Portland but there’s not that much lumberjack type things-ish. You could say that we don’t really have an accent either, or just general American. One thing Oregonians like to do is tease people from California ,especially SoCal’. We stereotype the valley girl accent and make fun of the ego. A lot of people that live in Oregon are from California though and the jokes are taken very lightly anyway.

As a Californian, I admit I do sometimes talk like a valley girl (I lived in a valley too) but that’s usually only when I talk faster. Moving to North Carolina last year, it’s super weird hearing people with country accents as it’s not very common in the West Coast. I still haven’t gotten used to it and most people can tell I’m from California just by looking at me somehow. Also, it’s weird because my two guy friends are major red necks but they’re not that rough type, they just like fishing and dirt biking. I’m used to city boys. They’re fun though. Most people from back home would probably make fun of them tbh.

"California stereotypes" are generally only about SOUTHERN California and aren't relevant to most of us here in the northern half. I think this video should be followed up with a comparison of Northern vs. Southern CA. I'm sure that would make a very interesting and entertaining. They are completely different regions that developed independently from each other, and there have been some attempts in the past to split them up into two separate states. Trust me, we are not the same, and it's hard to relate. When I've gone down to LA (which I've only done a few times when I absolutely had to for whatever reason), it honestly feels like I'm in a whole different world . . . and I can't wait to leave.

American accents tend to level off by the time they reach California except for the surf scene and valley talk.Ian has no accent at all. Georgia and N Carolina tend to have similar vowel sounds and NY, well Newyawkahs are a world to themselves!

Buffalo NY doesn't have a New Yawkah accent. Their accent is related to Inland Northern group of accents. Only NYC North Jersey have that accent upstate NY doesn't.

America is not that different from European places and cultures, it's only bigger... The diversity Americans have, are similar to European countries, not just Europe as a whole; even if that is also true. In the Netherlands we have 12 provinces, I would equate this with what in the US is states if we look at culture and identity concepts. No matter what direction you go, every 15 minutes there will be a different dialect, differences in the dialect. We also have the typical North vs South and West vs East divisions more or less. Similar to USA but on a much smaller scale. We say Italian as a language - but there technically are like 4 different types of Italian with slight differences, and then there are also dialects. Or Spain with in this example case, Catalonia. (Also in a way similar to the Netherlands and Friesland dynamics) Canada is more like Belgium with 2 languages and French being quite dominant looking at a basic level. The diversities we have in our countries in Europe is probably more diverse at times than in States of the US. Our history is longer and more complex if we compare US to EU. Looking at it from further back than US, indigenous history & pre-history there are a lot of similarities. We are one race - the human race. We have different ethnicities, and slight differences or larger differences in cultures but always with a shared overlap and human history.

Wow, this is completely wrong The US can not be compared to any European Country. The US by itself is larger than all of Europe combined. Also, our population is made up of immigrants from every country that exists in the world. We don't have a majority ethnic group or official language here. You can take just one of our 50 states for example California for comparison. California by itself is larger than any country in Europe and has more diversity than any country in Europe. The economy of California alone is on par with Germany's economy. There is no comparison to be made between Europe and the US.

@@emmanuelwood8702 Okay, I'm game; name the diversity California has. How many ethnicities does California have? USA is broken and always has been... point being? How are people to assimilate to "American culture" & American identity? Americans are so ignorant and dense. The American dream is all illusions build on lies. We have diversity, we have immigrants in Europe. So if we still had an Empire here, we could be compared? You are talking about native American tribes as singular ethnicities? In the Netherlands every 15 minutes by car in any given direction will give you a different "tribal" culture, with a slightly different local language. You define the conditions, and I will find the comparisons from across the pond. *Also just to correct you:* In termen van landmassa zijn de Verenigde Staten en Europa vergelijkbaar in grootte - de Verenigde Staten is 9.833.000 vierkante kilometer, terwijl Europa 10.180.000 vierkante kilometer is - *In terms of landmass the United States and Europe are comparable in size - the US is 9,833,000 square kilometers, and Europe is 10,180,000 square kilometers.* Europe is larger.

I see your point but the US diversity isn’t purely geographical. We have a history of slavery then an era forced legal segregation that didn’t end that long ago. You will find families that have lived in the same city for 6-8 generations and who are culturally different and might know very little about one another.
@schiffelers3944

@@anndeecosita3586 I am from the Netherlands/Europe we have a history of slavery [white slavery] what did you think the Roman Empire did, or the Moorish Empire, right before we did the Trans Atlantic slave trade? Tit-for-tat. Our forms of segregation is based on colonial territories. And assimilation and discriminations for those that moved to the Netherlands, that is still not gone and over. It is lesser extreme than in the US, but that basically goes with everything. Here you will also find families that have lived in the same city, location and who are culturally different and might know very little about one another. What do you thing the history of wars in Europe has done, and the history of religious powers? But we are not a Empire Island state... like the USA is. That is a thing the USA is different in. But this is part of our Histories also in Europe. Empires galore that rose and fell.

Per the shocking study, nearly half of all Americans - 49% - reported having fewer than three close friends. This marks a nearly twofold increase from 1990, when less than one-third (27%) of Americans had three or fewer close friends. Per the findings, a whopping “36% of young men” reach out to their parents first when dealing with a personal problem, compared to just 17% in 1990. Our increasingly digitized society could also be to blame for the friendlessness plague, as studies have shown that social media use can cause feelings of isolation. 63% of singles between 18-29 are interested in a dating relationship but can't find one.

california is the biggest state of all the ones discussed, yet the stereotypes including accent and weather, dont even cover 1/8th of the state -- e.g. u will get snow covered mountains further north and the constantly cold-ish San Fran where the stereotype is the tech bro looking for stocks vesting. and this doesnt even cover the non-coastal cali.

Surprised they speak alot of Spanish in California, and the Californian replies "its so diverse". True statements but both seem to ignore the state was once part of Mexico and Spain.. like the people didn't move cause the state was made apart of the Union. I swear my own countrymen don't know about states' history.

Yes, but the vast majority (like 99.999999%) of Spanish speakers in California are *recent* immigrants from Mexico and Central America, and their children, not the descendants from centuries past. After a few generations, immigrant families switch to English.
