I have a 20" Rossi in 45 colt that I've owned for over 6 years now. Absolutely love this little rifle and have had zero problems with it. I took it apart and slicked up the action and added a spring kit, removed the finish off of the wood and softened up the blunt edges and gave it a hand rubbed oil finish. One thing nice about the 92 action is that it is strong and will handle some rather stout loads. I have built up some 300 grain hunting loads for it but mostly shoot lighter Trail Boss loads. Since I cast my own bullets shooting is cheap. I know this is an old video so just saying a belated thanks.

I inherited my 92 from my dad, basically unused out of the box. The action was awful; very sticky and hard to cycle. However, after watching a KZbin video or two, I tore it down, cleaned up the action with a jewelers file and some sandpaper, lubed it up, and reassembled it, all within just a couple hours with no special tools. The rifle now functions wonderfully, is smooth as butter and tons of fun!

I bought a .44 mag. Rossi years ago but I sold it. It externally was the same size of as the .357 making the barrel of the .44 much thinner. After just three shots the rifle would start spreading the groups. It wasn't a problem when hunting but at the range it was maddening to wait between each round for the barrel to cool. What makes this lever gun so sweet is its traditional lines. Yup, half cock safety, top ejection, straight comb and kings gate loading port. I first saw this gun in an Interarms catalog in 1984. In my opinion it beats the "angle eject" Winchesters and side eject Marlins. The tang sight is just icing on the cake. An excellent all-round lever gun. Great video, sir.
@Mcseverythingoutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Side ejection is superior to top all day. Ever get a hot casing down your shirt or in your face? There is limited options for optics attachments. 95% of most rifles are side ejection for obvious reasons. The rear tang site is also a commodity. It’s a giant splinter that will get caught on almost everything.
@martyjewell56833 жыл бұрын
@@Mcseverythingoutdoors- all true observations, no doubt about it. Optics are difficult (long eye relief scopes?) to mount which does cut down on effective range. And yes, I've had my fair share of "hot case-atosis". My two top eject rifles are Rossi 62 SAC carbine and Taurus 72 carbine. Bottom eject (Norinco .22ATD) can cause burns too. Used to know a guy that would catch the ejected empties in a cup on his cowboy hat from his model 94.

@@rottdad775 Just saw the new one at the Henry website. Looks very cool and if they offer it in 38/357 I may take the plunge. The picture on the web site looks as if the rifle has a loading gate on the side of the receiver "and" the loading tube looks like it is still functional. That seems odd.
@rottdad7755 жыл бұрын
@@beniciomoldenado2315 yes, I can confirm they kept the tube as well as adding the side gate. The 16 inch carbine models are my favorite deer rifles. I live in a caliber restricted state so a 357 or 44 lever gun is just the ticket as i prefer not to use a 12 or 20ga slug or buy some oddball deer legal cartridge. And the short 16 inch carbine is wonderfully handy in a deer blind or tree stand. Worst case scenario throw some light 38spl in it and crack a few squirrels if no deer show up.

The only one I've had to slick up is the .45, which is a recently manufactured gun and arrived with a horribly rough action and an offensive amount of shavings, grit and gunk inside the mag tube and action. I went ahead and invested in the Steve's Gunz video and some of their upgrade parts, which I strongly recommend for anyone purchasing a newer R92. I also replaced the horrible bolt-top safety with Steve's aperture sight, which saved me from having to have the receiver drilled and tapped for the Williams. The other three guns have Williams receiver aperture sights. All these Rossi and Browning leverguns have companion revolvers and are used for woodswalking, hunting small game through hogs and deer, and fun range days with my wife, sons and grandkids. I'm working on adding a .22 levergun to the group.

It’s really refreshing to see a lever gun review by someone who actually knows their way around a lever gun! I appreciate the honesty you share about not just this particular gun but your friends overall experience along with Taurus/Rossi’s track record. What you said about the brand backs up my own experience. Finally, I really liked the chronograph data you gave and how it compared to revolver velocities seen with the same ammo. Great review! Subbed 👍
@johnchastain43514 жыл бұрын
Thanks for a nice review. The 357 magnum is my favorite cartridge. I have revolvers in 3-inch, 6-inch, and a rifle in 18.5-inch. I do not have a chronograph. However, those that due have shown that on many 357 mag loads barrel drag begins to reduce velocity at around 18 to 20 inches (see Ballistics by the Inch). So I bet the Barnes would go faster out of a barrel in the range of 18 inches or so. If I get a level gun in 357 mag it may be a 16-inch barrel. My 18.5-inch gun is a Ruger 77/357 bolt gun. It is light and plenty powerful and accurate for deer and hogs in the woods. It can shoot a 1-inch group off a rest at 100 yards with the 140g Hornady revolution. It also like the 140g Barnes and is about the same. Most of the other loads in the 158g class are 1.5 to 2 inches at 100.

The fit and finish on it isn't nearly as nice as it is on my Winchester 94, but it's not bad at all for the price point. A complaint for me is the rear sight it comes with. It's obvious Rossi uses the same sight for all their different barrel lengths. It's probably perfect for a 16 inch barrel, but the notch is way too large for a 24 inch.

Rossi 92s are a lot like horses. To most people they all look about the same. But if you get ahold of a good one or a bad one you will know it quick.....If you do get a good one hang on to it. Great job Buffalo!

Been pleased with my Rossi 92 in 357 and the Rossi Overland shotguns. That being said I think the quality control has decreased since my guns were made 20 plus years ago and I also think the Rossi Taurus 92's have an additional decrease in quality control, in other words they are letting too many dogs out the door. That Rossi Taurus Ranch Hand I had had a safety that was very difficult to take off of safe but functioned fine otherwise. I still keep looking at that Winchester 92 357 in the local Gun Shop and it looks like a very nice 92 course it is marked at $1079.00. Thanks for the info on the velocity found it very interesting.
@buffalosoutdoors9 жыл бұрын
+MrHolster I agree with your assessment on the quality or lack thereof on the Rossi/Taurus models. Hopefully they have enough sense to turn that around because these are great little rifles if you get a hold of a good one. It shouldn't be a lottery though. I'll bet that Winchester 92 is a sweetheart. Merry Christmas Pard.

I have a Rossi ‘92 carbine with a big hoop lever. Put a ‘Marbles Bullseye’ sight on the barrel (I moved its original sight to my Winchester ‘96) . My favorite brush gun. (Cool Factor) I do load my own .357 magnums. Found a load that’s perfect to near 100 yards ( I can’t see that far away) .

I bought one of these Saturday and love it however it's very ammo sensitive. No type of soft tip ammo will feed into the barrel, it catches. But I've found that JHP in both 38 and 357 feeds flawless so not a big deal just have to use that ammo. I've read on forums that this problem is hit or miss with these guns.
@jimmorrison3064 жыл бұрын
Gator Unleashed , ours was ammo sensitive in the beginning, as it preferred the Specials. We didn’t keep a round count, but it smoothed out and feeds the Magnums now, too. Also, you will find that most lever actions like this (regardless of brand) tend to be ammo sensitive, especially with these straight walled revolver cartridges. Remember that a lot of the early guns shot a semi bottlenecked case, not a straight walled case.

The current production Winchester/Browning/Miroku guns have a tang safety switch. Not sure if a tang aperture can be installed on these. Those 140gr rounds doing 1722 fps: 922 ft-lb energy. Pretty awesome.

It's now 2022 and I have 2 Rossi 92's. The first one is over 10 years old, it's a Stainless Steel, 20" barrel model in 454 Casull. It's got over 700 rounds through it and it's never missed a beat or a deer. The other is also a stainless steel 20" round barrel model in 357 Mag, It's been around for 4 years and is just murder on beer cans and clay birds out to 100 yards and beyond. The fit, finish and operation on both has been awesome even with 45 Colt or 38 Special. Now if Rossi would come out with one in 327 Magnum ..........

Thanks for a great review using a lot of ammo combinations and running the chronograph. I'm picking up a 20", .357 Rossi m92 this week and hope I get a good one. So far, my Taurus products have proven accurate and dependable. Any issues I've had were addressed promptly. I have one question which you might have mentioned. You said the .38 special rounds shot to point of aim I believe. What was the offset for .357 rounds, on average.
@hilltop-ob9bn8 жыл бұрын
My experience has been the 357s shoot 6 inches to a foot higher than 38s at 50 yards.

I own 3 of them and have no complaints whatsoever fit an finish is more than adequate, the action will smooth up with use and the accuracy is what you would expect from a pistol caliber rifle .if your wanting near perfection go with a Henry.

I like mine too; 18” SS .38 Spl/.357 Mag version. It does like to jam open when cycling sometimes, which requires a full disassembly/reassembly to correct (with no apparent reason found for the jam). Also had to replace the little short tube that creates tension for the extractor once.

+51Dss Thanks, this video was a fun one to make. I don't have access to one in .44 mag at the present time but if I can get my hands on one I'll get it on video for sure. I do have a Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag that I will be getting on video sometime this spring. I didn't know if I should have included the chrono footage or not but thanks to all the feedback I've gotten I think I will do that more often.
@51Dss9 жыл бұрын
+Buffalo Sometimes chrono stuff isn't all that interesting; but when you're shooting pistol caliber rifles it's very interesting to see the difference in MV between the pistol and the rifle. When you were shooting from distance I was thinking the 357mag would be effective for White Tail Deer...and then you mentioned that yourself. So when you get around to doing your vid with the '94 - 44mag it'll be another fun and interesting vid. By the way, I believe the 44mag guns also will run the 44 special. So it would be cool if you can run some of that too.

I got a stainless .357 about a month ago. I can’t guarantee that they are all the same, but mine has perfect fit and finish, and the loading gate is neither stiff nor sharp. The furniture is nondescript, but fine, too. And the price was great, given the current situation/inflation.

I've got two of these, a carbine and 1 with a 20" barrel both in 357mag. The carbine won't feed full length 357mag unless the overall length is 1.5". The rifle continuously double feeds 38 specials, so basically the carbine only feeds 38's and the rifle only feeds 357mag.
