Great tip on how to use those buckhorns. I’m like you, only ever heard people complaining about them without supplying a remedy.

Admittedly I'm 40-45yrs older than the fellow in this video & I can say we learned how to sight with buckhorns back in our BBgun & .22 days. This is something kids should learn, so it's good that it's addressed in the video for the young crowd.

Awesome! Thanks! Just bought one and was trying to figure that out before I took it to the range. You definitely saved me some ammo! 👍

I recently got a used Interarms/ Rossi m92 357 with buckhorns. I stumbled into centering the front post. I have removed the rear sight elevator so the sight rests on the barrel. It shoots great now

Great video. Just took my 92 out for the first time yesterday and noticed with the sight adjusted to the lowest point, I had to hold 10 inches low at 100y

I got rid of the buckhorn on my Rossi 92 and replaced it with a ghost ring/peep sight from Skinner sights. Makes a huge difference.

Thanks for the lesson on the buckhorn sight. I too had no idea how to use a buckhorn sight - before I went out and shot it do I bury the sight into the notch or center it in the sights like on an M16/M4/AR-15. Centering makes sense.

It is a pretty fast acquisition once you get the hang of it. It's not going to be super accurate but when used to take snap shots at moving game it will do the trick.

I was shooting my son's Rossi yesterday, and I was nailing snowballs from about 50 yards away with the buckhorns.. First time using it. I'm an AR guy, and I'm used to centering the post in the rear aperture, so it was natural feeling to me and it was VERY accurate.
@RsFrag3d
@RsFrag3d Жыл бұрын
You shouldn’t have to center the post. Look thru the rear aperture and focus on the front sight. Your eye should automatically center the patridge post

Nice info,sad to say though,i bought a new Rossi and i could not get consistent hits with the factory buckhorn sights,i had to take the rear sight off and bend it so when reinstalled it would sit all the way down,it used to sit high.I gave up in the end and bought a Marbles tang peep sight and its a different gun!!It really gave me confidence in the rifles ability,i will never go back to Buckhorn sights now.

+My Rossi Rifle You raise a good point, I could definitely see the leaf getting tweaked during assembly or shipping. If your sights are sitting away from the barrel it's worth trying to bend them back to flush.

Great advice. What I dont understand is if that is how that sight system is meant to be lined up, what is purpose of the small notch in the bottom of the buckhorn? Is it purely for centering?

Thanks for the tip. My Henry 45LC had the same problem you had with your Rossi. I also didn't feel it should be necessary to move the buckhorn sight all the way to the top just to acquire the zero I was seeking. By aligning the front bead inside the center of the buckhorn's imaginary ghost ring, and keeping the rear elevation ladder in the middle slot, I was able to consistently place my shots almost dead on zero. At least that was the case when there was no shooter error. Thanks again.

+Robert Sikes It definitely is an interesting way to use sights and I understand why they made them like that for taking quick shots at game. What I can't figure out is why Rossi doesn't put a card with the proper sight picture and an explanation of buckhorns in the box.

I actually reached out to Rossi after seeing your video and getting good results using your recommendation to see what they would say. The customer Rep on the phone put me on hold, with the sort of...."is this guy really asking me how to use a sight...." you would expect from a first level customer support guy and came back to the line only to tell: "Sir, you need to put the bead in that bottom notch of the rear sight". So, they make em...but I don't think they shoot em. ;)

With regard to trouble sighting in using the buckhorn: did you try the elevation settings? It looks like your rifle has the stair step slider under the rear peep bar. Grip the horns and lift up gently while sliding the block up or down to the next notch.
@GunAndShotTV
@GunAndShotTV 8 жыл бұрын
Yes the elevation is adjustable but in order to hit anything using the bottom of the horn you would need it adjusted all the way up. The issue isn't the buckhorns but rather knowing how they were meant to be used. they were a primitive ghost ring meant for taking game and not designed for target work. once you accept them for what they are they work great. or you could always just switch to an aftermarket peep sight.

For me, the best way to shoot with buckhorn sights, is to take them off and install a quality peep sight. XS, Skinner WildWest all have quality reputations. Any of them would make a great choice. Peep sights all the way. Buckhorn sights are pretty. More so if their on someone else's rifle.
@GunAndShotTV
@GunAndShotTV 8 жыл бұрын
+Dorene Cristler I think they work great for fast shooting and plinking. But for serious target work I would just grab a different rifle anyways.

+Gun&ShotTV Seriously, I really think buckhorn sights would work best on handguns and tactical shotguns. I think there were aftermarket buckhorn sights sold back in the eighties.

Thanks for the heads up on the buckhorns! Question...on your rifle the finger lever seems to droop down about an inch. Is it supposed to do that? My Win 92 new production, the lever sits tight up against the metal at the bottom of the action. I see some that kind of droop down a bit and some that don't. Thanks!
@GunAndShotTV
@GunAndShotTV 9 жыл бұрын
Jimmy870 There is a spring detent that is supposed to keep the lever locked up but it you need to push the lever all the way up before it catches. In the video I'm pretty sure I was monkeying around with the lever and didn't close it all the way. Ideally the lever should be tight against the tang when closed, but on some rifles there will be a bit of slop. Usually it's a non-issue due to the fact that when firing your hand is there holding the lever shut.

I just got a Rossi 92 like yours with a 20" barrel. I was disappointed that my front sight didn't come with a brass bead on it like I've seen on some other Rossi 92s. Does yours have brass on the sight?
@GunAndShotTV
@GunAndShotTV 7 жыл бұрын
Mine does and I think it's just brazed or glued on. Contact rossi and see if they will send you a new sight or even just the bead to glue on. You could probably also find something brass at the hardware store that would work when glued on or just paint the sight with some florescent nail polish. If you don't want to mess with it most gunsmiths would be well versed in soldering on a brass bead.

I can see the brass dot on mine fine it's just aligning it in the rear that's the issue.

another thing iron sight users do is focus to much on the sights and not enough focus on the target . once you have shot enough quit staring at your sights and focus on the target your accuracy will greatly improve and youll start to love iron sights . im almost 60 and love them !!!

Dude, you broke the screw too? I’m tired of getting “screwed” by Rossi’s shoddy manufacturing! And they really couldn’t figure out how to secure the barrel and magazine without cutting recesses into the barrel?
