I know guys who served in Afghanistan who told me that ANA guys would remove the safety pins from their RPGs... One guy tripped and the tip smacked into a curb and he got vaporized, the general consensus of western soldiers is that Afghans don't understand safety or just don't care.

The answers to the questions Ross asks the Afghan fighters is always moving and intelligent even though they arent well educated school wise they are bright and well spoken and so grateful of new knowledge they get to learn. I know if i was a soldier and i fought beside the Afghan's i wouldve befriended many of them.

They must be pretty fucked because apparently there is 300,000 ANA fighters and the Taliban had only around 1/10 of that. Even assuming the Taliban had 100,000 troops, 3-1 is a pretty decent advantage, especially when they’re both from the same country and know the land and one team has a lot of good, expensive new toys to use.

I remember Kunduz all to well airport has a jet on a stand looking like it taking off. Was also a little bit of a troubling area. I never trusted them and few months later the unit that replaced us did a mission and am ANA soldier shot upward to hit the helicopter in the engineers and transmission.

That depends what unit of the ANA you are talking about. The standard conscripts are very bad, yes. But many of the kandaks are very well trained, motivated and equipped. And the Afghan Commando Units are also very good fighters and have been ruining the Taliban for the last couple of years.

I am genuinely proud of ISAF for doing their best to build a sustainable infrastructure of law and order, but I am more impressed by the recruitment numbers and the eagerness of the Afghan nationals to build their own country back up. I don't think that it will be a quick process (and I assume that's the consensus opinion), closer to a 50 year mission (or at least a few generations of soldiers). The main issue is politics over here, cutting and withdrawing troops who are providing crucial training and support. I am rather anti-interventionist, however I think when there's good work happening, why stop it?
