We The Dutch have never mobilised in modern war the way others have. When visiting NZ and Australia I was humbled that every single little town has a memorial, often with casualties listing back to the Boer War, The Great War ,WW2 etc. Also visiting places like Omaha beach, Verdun and numerous war cemeteries has risen my feeling of brotherhood with The West. Your boys were sent into the meatgrinder for my freedom. Too all veterans or relatives , thank you.

something amazing about this piece and his reporting: i had a very clear basic idea of the order of events and what was going on on the battlefield. There was no dramatic corny 3d maps or anything, he got all the footage and commentary to provide that information. He did it consciously, asking for run downs, etc. Even in combat he is making sure we know whats going on so we get a whole picture. Amazing journalism.
@teaCupkk
@teaCupkk 5 жыл бұрын
My only disappointment is that the camera was lying in a ditch, behind walls or in a corn field the whole time. How about making a proper nature documentary and getting a drone up into the air, a periscope over the compound wall, action cameras on the end of broomsticks. I want close-ups of roaring Taliban fighters launching RPGs, fearsome Mujahideen laying down suppressive fire, etc..
@G-24x
@G-24x 5 жыл бұрын
@@teaCupkk that's real easy for you to say. Why don't you go and do it then. All you need is a plane ticket and a drone. This man is incredibly brave for doing what he did for the purpose of journalism. He is literally 20 or 30 yards away from enemies trying to kill him and yet he's still reporting and telling us what's going on. I bet you would shit your pants if you go anywhere close.
@teaCupkk
@teaCupkk 5 жыл бұрын
@@G-24x Oh, I never claimed I'm brave or anything. But if I were to be in the nature documentary business like Ross Kemp here, I'd definitely be doing a better job at it. Cracking and whizzing bullets are great, but not a single pixel of an Afghan fighter firing his AK in anger. Not even a photo of a dead Taliban next to a bomb crater. To me that makes this documentary a little bit dry..
@G-24x
@G-24x 5 жыл бұрын
@@teaCupkk You are such an idiot. First of all you have to be brave to do something like this so you can't even say IF you were there you'd do better because your too much of a pussy to even go there as you admitted. Second, he can't get a picture of a soldier firing his weapon because Ross is not allowed near the frontline because he's not allowed to carry a gun. Third, he is under command of whatever Commander he is traveling with and I'm sure they would not allow him to film or get close to any mutilated blown up bodies for a documentary much less I doubt Ross would even want to. Ross went has went to the furthest extreme possible and compiled some of the most exciting journalism I've seen. You are a disrespectful idiot who sits on your computer making claims that your too big of a pussy to back up. Shut up and appreciate how willing this man was to put his self in dangerous situations just to entertain and educate you or do it yourself. Oh yeah I forgot, you won't because your a pussy.

It isn't explained in the video but those British soldiers held out for around 50 days before being escorted out. At the start they had support from 120 Danish soldiers who were equipped with armoured vehicles and heavy weaponry. The Danes had to withdraw taking their equipment with them and they were replaced with a lightly armed group of British soldiers which left the British heavily outnumbered. There was quite intense fighting for fifty days with the Taliban coming right up to the compound the soldiers were in with the British soldiers losing 2 men. Eventually the village elders made a deal with the Taliban and the soldiers to try and stop the fighting where the British soldiers would be escorted out and the Taliban wouldn't take the village (they eventually did).

I don't know how Ross stays so calm through situations like this. Just calm as can be covering his head and then after a shot wizzes by he turns to the camera and giggles and keeps talking. lol. Balls of steel.

6:46 i was in Robert fosters section in basic training. I remember the first day when getting our uniforms that he was always the first guy trying to crack a joke during the awkward silence of not knowing anyone in the platoon. I remember that had this thing about sleeping on his back face up and his knees bent with his feet on the mattress and thinking, what a bizarre way to sleep. remember seeing how proud he was when he stood with his family after the passing out parade. I remember being told that foster had been killed in action... RIP mate, i'll always remember you.

Well done Ross; I know this is much belated but as a former soldier in the Australian Infantry and not a photographer studying journalism you portray the story the way it should be told. Whilst I hope the contemporary world has less conflict, I hope if there is one to document, you do it :)

Normally I would say no, definitely not. At current, they are noncombatants and are not contributing to the fight in a physical manner, so they are protected by law. But as this is the Taliban were on about here and they couldn't care less who they shoot so long as it's a foreigner, I'd at least give them sidearms for self defense.
