15:10 for details. Not a meme, they used to use a GAV chip, and then switched to a GAY chip for the same function. I don't have access to data sheets for these chips. If anyone in my comment section DOES, who can tell me the difference between the GAV and GAY chip, and give any insight as to why the latter is causing a no power issue, I'd highly appreciate it. As I always say, we are not engineers, just janitors. Any insight appreciated

You can download the Rev 1.00 datasheet from Renesas website. It's from 2013 and there is no mention of the GAY in there, though, only GAV (-10...100C temp range) and GAZ (-40...100C) for that particular package. It's a bit weird they never updated the datasheet, maybe the GAY chips are fake? :P Or, it could be that the failures are caused by something else in the design...

Assuming (yeah I know) that Apple is like most most manufacturers there is not a single part inside that does not absolutely have to be there. It's all about cost reduction vs reliability. The closer you get to that edge the lower the cost and the more money Apple makes. Not one dime for enhanced reliability. I fix heavy duty trucks for a living. R2R is my main interest in this channel. That and Louis's occasionally epic rants. I digress. I tell my people all the time. If there is paper in the box along with the part READ IT!! Paper costs money. The OE is not going to spend a single fucking penny more than they have to. That paper is there for a reason as is that rubber doohickey you mentioned at the start. Look into buck converters, Apple once again cheapped out and charges extra for parts. In my opinion the buck converter failed due to the IC not being propperly protected for back EMF as part of the 1V 6A regulation. The back light IC also failing would have me look into the power cleaning capacitors that should have been beside the buck converters since they can ' dirty ' the 5V line as well as their respective output.

@djhart253 жыл бұрын
To be fair. It's really not THAT important. Comparing it to something that would make a plane crash is kind of silly. Yes, it is there for a reason, and you should keep it as is if you can.. But it's also a moronic design, and if it were truly essential, wouldn't be a flimsy piece of rubber just barely glued to the heat sink. As someone who has opened/diagnosed hundreds of macbooks, I've never seen one fail for the sole reason that the rubber wasn't there.

Hi Paul, two things... simple one first. make sure your NOT using water soluble flux if you NOT going to clean your bd. water soluble flux WILL corrode traces and pins over two to three years and as it does so will ceate resistance tracks between pins, and this will affect FETS. a rosin based will not 2. after repairing a bd, do a thermal picture of the bd on power up to see what the thermal profile is on the very warm buck converter chips and the display chip.....just to see what a normal working bd shows. do both converters blow in all ten cases. of just one sometimes. if both it could be worth watching their power INPUT pins for spikes on power up. if just one, i'd suspect weaker parts or a bad production run. often engineers will allow these chips to overdrive the FETS for better efficiency, and if the FET gates are protected this will often cause the driving chip to blow it's outputs when the gate protection diodes kick in.... the solution is a couple of 10 to 20 ohm resistors in the cate connection to the FETS. jim

Sure they should go with the times. but it should still be standard. so if they go from USB micro to USB C then all future phones from that point has to be with USB-C and if new technology comes out 7 years later then this new technology should be standard from that point on all phones. so we avoid the charging of the connection form for each new phone coming out. so people can use their old charging cable.

Just a random lead to go after a bit - is there a chance that the chips aren't the cause - but instead the failures are caused by MLCC capacitors that fail open or closed, and maybe many of them slightly heal by the reflow heat and flux? The higher the chip, and the longer along the PCB in the direction of greatest bending - such as the mid point between mounting posts, or outer edges of the PCB polygon..

It could be an inaccurate power rating similar thing used to happen on my VW you would hear a hum in the speaker system due to the wrong amount of power being used in the vehicle. I would lean towards a fault in the design of one or both chips on the board.

Might the CSD MOSFETS (csd58873q3d) be the problem here? I see they have only a little allowed gate voltage and offer matched Zener/TVS Diodes on their gate. It the gate-drive voltage of the GAY chip is higher then it might always short its output stage through the Zener/TVS on the mosfets gate. That might induce some inductive spikes/ringing that kills the chip. Or back emv/negative voltage on the 5v rail that destroys chips on the 5v rail. Get a working macbook and check for the 5V rail with a high-bandwith oscilloscope. Do some load changes on the CPU (some slow and especially some fast ones). If you see negative voltages/high dips on the 5v rail then it might have something to do with back emf/shorting on the GAY chips output/driver stage for the mosfets gates. Also it could be that the input voltage for the gay/gav chips was changed and now has problems with the mosfets gates or other switching-noise side-effects. Also it could just be other mosfets that dont match with the renesas chips (then the gay vs. gav might just have nothing to do with this issue).

Much of the equipment I work on (commercial audio), is getting smaller and smaller to the point, in some cases, the components are too small to work with. Fortunately, most of the stuff I work on is still manageable. I do need a couple new soldering irons. I've been using older Hakkos and the new FX series looks really interesting as do some of the Metcal units that are in use in our engineering department. Have you any view on those? In your repairs, which solder are you using and which flux is that you're applying in this video? How hot is that hot air set for? Hopefully you'll have time to answer. Keep up the outstanding work and the excellent videos!

My air station is always full temperature (it's 450c on this station) and 5 points down from full flow, you need to learn to adjust the board temperature by distance with your air nozzle not by the buttons. There are times you adjust air flow or temp but 99% of the time you leave it where it is. Take a look in the video description for more supplies and tips!

Sorry but i need to get this out. Just put some Capton Tape on the surrounding Components its cheap and it protects components like capacitors from getting damaged by heating up. (There are some Components that can only with stand a single soldering. Like some Tantal Capacitors) And it protects them from wobbly hands ;).

That does nothing. Literally nothing. If you were to try, and of course I would never suggest that you try this due to safety concerns, but if you put kapton tape around your finger and then heated it up, you would realize that you immediately burned the hell out of your finger, regardless of the kapton tape. The tapesl does nothing

As far as I know, Louis just set it to the max. I do the same and never had any problems.

Not sure where the UK/MicroUSB thing came from- almost everything is USB-C now. As an engineer, I do wish there could be some sort of forward-looking design standard with backward-compatibility in mind though!

They have moved the complexity from hardware to software. You used to have one standard per one connector, now you have one connector to rule them all, with all the standards.

Which is nice - you can implement any device with any device purely in software. Interoperability between your modern USB drive and your good old PS2 or Wii? Sure!

Lol, so many innuendos here. "get rid of the rubber", "blow hard", "gay chips", "this thing comes in", " I popped around for a while", "it's got hot", "right here", "if you put it wrong and let it sit in heat", "slap her"... I blame the title, it put the tone.

About The rubber on the beginning. If Apple could save that rubber money, they would. So.. must have its purpose totally agree with you.
