Nothing but love Ross....I think this is one of the situations where manual focus would’ve really helped. Just trying to help, my friend. Over than that, another great video!

if i have trouble with focus, I'll hang a paper or towel etc just on the other side of what I'm filming e.g. coat hanger with a pillow case draped over the long straight part and then hang from a higher branch to it creates a backdrop....then your cell phone camera (or other autofocus) will focus on what you are doing. Great Video, would be awesome to really see the detail. Perhaps you can re-do this video sometime.

Thanks Ross. I'm going to have to graft onto my in ground BT next year. Probably going to do a cocktail tree for fun.

Easiest but is it the most successful? Do you know how many you have done and the take rate? I had to do a few (due to the large size of the scions) and the chips healed but no bud break so I'm wondering if it will actually lead to any growth. Meanwhile my cleft, rind bark and saddle grafts have taken off and are full of figs.

It's not AS successful, but it's close and I really like how the graft heals.

What time of year is it best to graft with this method, or rather what seasonal "state" does the tree have to be in? And maybe what temperature.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that if you're cutting the cambium on the bottom chip, that the top 2 won't be up-taking nutrients because the cambium was cut below it? Wouldn't it make sense to stagger them a bit rather than have them vertically aligned? My guess is most of you bottom buds have success rather than the top ones.
@mfehmi
@mfehmi 5 жыл бұрын
SilveradoCanMan He’s not cutting the whole cambium layer , so all the buds should have a chance. Also, the sap isn’t always flowing from bottom to top, it all depends on the moon phase. If we’re at full moon, the sap will be very high in the branches and leaves and in the next moon phase the sap will go down. In other words, any of those 3 buds could be successful.

That's great Ross. I have some grafting I've been wanting to do soon. I would like to try the bud grafting. I finally got my spring fig video up this morning. My tree that had a bunch of brebas lost most of them. There's only three left unless there's some still hiding that I didn't see. Do you think it's because we got too much moisture? They turned black and shriveled up.

Hey Ross do you do this bud graft technique while the tree is dormant? Or can you do it any time of the year? You just knock the leaves off of your bud and then graft?
@codychickadee5095
@codychickadee5095 Жыл бұрын
I'm from the north so I can't speak for figs, but for plums and pears apples etc. You want your rootstock awake and your scion wood dormant. You can graft now using this year's growth, the bud at the base of the petiole (dormant bud will waken next year) onto viable rootstock and that bud will shoot up in spring.

@@ZonaFigs my pleasure. I have gotten the grafting bug and am pretty excited about all of the possibilities. Happy to share. There are lots of great videos on youtube if you keep digging. There is a fella I can't recall exactly but his channel is named something like "Jsacadura" he has a ton of great and informative videos.

@codychickadee5095 yep, I've seen some of his videos. It's great stuff. I have grafted 4 apples, 3 mulberries, 4 satsumas, and 2 mangoes, and only I 1 apple graft has taken and grew, so I was going to try the bud graft on a fig.

@@ZonaFigs awesome, I really like the chip bud method! The only criticism I have for this video here is doing multiple buds at a time allows things to dry out. I think it's best to do one at a time and limit the amount of oxidation on the cambium. It happens as fast as a cut apple I swear.

The tree must be growing. Best time is shortly after the tree wakes up and sap flow is medium in strength.

Hey Ross I have a kinda weird question for you. I picked up a Brown Turkey Fig today and when I went to go plant it in a new container (from the 5 gallon container it was in) as the rootball was coming out of the container the soil suddenly broke in half and fell apart. There wasn't a ton of roots throughout the soil so I assume the plant was relatively young and maybe the roots weren't fully developed. Anyway I went ahead and planted the top half, even though I lost some roots to the bottom half. Will the plant recover or should I think about returning it?
