Truly is nice when owners give these kind of cars heaps of love, even when it just a simple quirky work ute like this one. Doesn't have to be anything special but in the eyes of their owner it can be their absolute pride and joy. Great review!

Survival in top condition of such a common work vehicle is most rare in the wild these days. The throw away society has some kind hearted care takers of so very few lucky mechanical work horses that served faithfully & survived several theft & recovery trials to run out of rego & sit rusting unwashed Aventis to be discarded to the crusher so the grass is easy to mow again & be shipped out to the P.R.C to be reborn as dishwashers & small dog wire fence enclosures available at kmart for $34.99. T1000 killing robots & dog food tins theirs your old falcon pal. Beef stew with pasta. Supply & demand will cause the few still alive to be worth much more than when new. At this point others realise the lost potential they abandoned at pickapart & scramble to buy another old buck'et to relive the painful memories of owning such rare vehicles now & today in hope to make more than they invested & get a 10x fold Ford sticker on the rear window.

Good to see an older model on the channel 👍 Great review 🍻 Although the XG was significantly different from the XF, it wasn’t just the front end changed. The XF had the 4.1L pushrod motor (250 crossflow) with a carb. Many of the utes were optioned as auto, which was 3 speed. XG has the 4L / 243cu fuel injected SOHC motor and received the newer 4 speed automatic. It would be great to see an XH review, they received the E series steering and front suspension. Thanks for making this video.

I think the EFI 4.1 was an option across all the passenger cars, but not sure about the ute and panel van. The 4.1 had the edge on low down lugging power I think. It had been improved so much by the end of it's development life.

Not in Ute form though, all the XF utes were carby, none with the EFI version 4.1 which were reserved only for Falcon sedan, wagon and the LWB range.

Those utes were Built Ford Tough. They were basic they were practical they were very popular. They were not built for speed but they were built to work. Even the police used them as division vans in the late 80s and early 90s. I remember many tradesman owning them they were truly great cars.

1:05 those 4.0 inline 6's were also in EB series 2 and ED's 4:22 that instrument cluster was the same as EA (s-pack and Fairmont), EB (s-pack, XR6 and XR8 and Fairmont) and ED (XR6, XR8, Futura and Fairmont). 7:29 the horn on the stick on the side is a carry over from the XF's. That steering wheel also appeared in the EB series 2 and ED's that didn't have cruise control and in those the horn was in the middle of the steering wheel. 8:53 that little plate was where the boot release was for the XF's sedan's, and I think the rear wiper switch for XF wagons (that dashboard assembly is largely an XF carry-over). You're right though - they were often used for all kinds of things such as the switch for after-market LPG conversions. Those XG's really were a bit of a mish-mash of the old XF it's based on, along with the updated running gear and bits and pieces inside of the current Falcon's of the time. Even the grille was made to look EB-ish. Even the wheels on that XG are the same as (correct me if I'm wrong) EB s-pack/XR6/XR8 and ED XR6/XR8

This is the earliest engine you've tested which the Barra descended from. Shows how much better they got. You need to get your hands on an 88 EA with the single point injected 3.9 hooked to the old Borg Warner three speed auto !! Build quality was "amazing". Try a series 2 EF or EL Fairmont Ghia. They came with the Tickford six. You might be taken aback at their acceleration from rest for an N/A Falcon six.

Lovely timewarp car. A credit to the owner for preserving a piece of Aussie automotive history. I knew they weren't rockets - but 13 seconds to 100? Changing to 3rd just short of the mark hurt it for sure. But it's great you respected the old dear's redline. Would love to see you get into an XD or XE highway patrol.

They do have a improvised cup holder, wedge the cup between the center console and the seat where the seat belt clip is works wonders, and that blank plate on the dash in the sedan houses the boot release

That plate you're talking about at 8:45, is actually used in some factory models. If you optioned dual-fuel the switch to change between petrol and LPG is mounted there in the centre of the plate. The same goes in the Outback variant you discussed earlier. The centre of that plate is where they mounted the switch to change between the primary and secondary tanks. Though that plate is a good place to mount your own switches. I have a factory dual-fuel XH and when you're driving the car it can be difficult to tell what fuel you're running on, so I mounted a light there which piggybacked off the LPG switch wiring to illuminate when the car is running on LPG.

Panel van at 3:18 was traded and refreshed by John Fautley Motors at Car City Ringwood. Previous owner was from Bendigo area. So good that my brother bought it and then sold it to a bloke in Gippsland. Fantastic example.

Love looking at this as I have the identical ute but a 1993 ford xg s pack. it’s also in the same colour and a floor shift manual been fixing it up for the last 3 years bought it for intention of putting it back on the road as you don’t see very many s pack manuals rust free.

The blank plate underneath the key is left over from XF sedans and wagons. My sedan from factory has the fuel cap release which drops the rear number plate and the electronic boot release and I’ve added the comms port for my Haltech there. I’ve got an XF Ute in Perth WA and I’ve put the button there for turning off my driving lights

Love these! The old 4.0 SOHC is a great engine, especially paired with a 5 speed manual. I daily drive a column auto EB II GLi wagon, it still keeps up nicely and is decently powerful, considering it's age.

Awesome! The cluster is straight from the EB/ED Falcon S (XR6/8), however, the ute had White font, while the Sedans were Yellow font. My old man had one of these XG's back in the day, it was awesome. (I'm now restoring a EB2 S XR6. You need to get an EB on the channel! )

Actually the instruments cluster dates back to the EA 026 of 1988. Ford was very good at using design that would work for other generation vehicles, hell if you can find the XF Fairmont Ghia dash it will work in this alsoz for a bit of extra lux

You certainly don’t see too many around today that’s for sure, I bought one of the last XF Falcon Utes with the old alloy head crossflow and as much as I am a Ford man after owning heaps of falcons years prior from my first an XK ( when I was a young bloke and lived in Perth actually) and lots of models after including an XW GT and an XY GS with the 250 2-V I have to say that XF ute I bought back in the 80’s was a Lemon, I had nothing but trouble with just about everything with it unfortunately but I paid so much for it that I had to persevere with the car for a few years until I changed to the General in 1991 and bought the first commodore ute a VG S Pack with the 5 litre injected Holden V8 and auto, I then gave it the Bilstein treatment & king springs and I have to say it was a fabulous Ute back in the day, with a briquette bag filled with beach sand over the rear axles in the Ute back the car handled and cornered amazingly it stuck to the road like shit to a blanket! It was a good car and I love and still love the 304 injected Holden V8’s they hold a special place and I have returned to the Ford fold again a few years ago now with my beloved FG XR6 with the fabulous Barra again a great car as you know, that was a real good bit of nostalgia you did there with the XG they were different times and to think that the design went back to the late 70’s with the XD and on a bit longer with the XH 👍👍

The XF shape lived on in these , definitely getting harder to find. I remember as a kid looking at an abandoned XF Fairmont Ghia in Burgundy paint. Nice cars in the mid to late 80s. The nostalgia in those things

I got a XG ute and a XG panelvan. I'm gonna do both up and sell the ute. The panelvan is very tidy so I'm going to paint it metallic black and convert it to a 351 Windsor.

Owners of these falcons, remove the HVAC fan resistors once a year check the ceramic is still on them and no leaves and plastic have built up on the coil and drain, Can be a fire hazard. ( I was a Auto electrician back then)

My old man was driving my uncles ute when something like that started it on fire. The local towie was following him at the time & he emptied 2 large extinguishers on it fighting the falcon inferno. Was Only a couple of years old at the time... but the ute was written off. Deemed Falcon Toasted 🤣

But on the upside...the XG my uncle got to replace the ute with the flaming good heater. Was a Green XR-6 much like the review ute. Same colour. I was surprised spotting the front & i realised it wasn't the same ute not xr6 you reviewed. .. anyway My grandfather ended up with It years later. From uncle & he has kept it turtle waxed & looking spotless immaculate for its age. He's retired now but it was he's work ute. Not many around.. especially in this sorta clean & original condition. He's gleams with Shiny duco & looking straight as. Tidy & close to mint inside & out. Its not anything to dream about imo. The Commodore ute equivalent at the time.. was so much nicer in every aspect (just M.O) This old ute body style was pushed with barely any advancement overall. Especially in safety...handling wasn't anything flash. Manual got more poke than the sluggish auto snail 🐌 version. They top out at 140ish & take a long time to maybe get their lol. Power steering belt flys off first little 1/2 throttle doughnut attempt in a wet grassy paddock with bald tyres on the rear. 😆they arnt exactly power houses. Clunky front ends with bugger all lock to lock turning circle ..brakes are average at best. Buckets but probably better than a Ranger. At least the Coon Saloon has lumber support adjustment on drivers seat. Thirsty petrol chuggers if not well serviced & maintained. I remember the panel van XG petrol was only getting 250-280k's per tank if drove it like granny. Boss had Just purchased it. Did full service plugs leads cap Aircleaner oil & went over everything else with a fine tooth con. Was getting double & some easy Afterwards...can't recall exactly but 600 or 700k's per tank. & driven much harder/in traffic. ive been passenger in one of these utes in a fatal crash..sadly my work mate & cuz was killed instantly in the collision. We were travelling at 50 to 55km/h went under an on coming semi trailer around a left hand down hill corner. Wet road & a tandem trailer loaded with A/cs.. we were going to put in. Barely touched the brakes to slow a touch downhill & the utes front brakes just locked up. Brand new tyres on & oil /tree sap on the road .first rain after some hot weather. The entire front end was gone. Front Wheels smashed completely off. I was trapped for a minute after regaining conciousness. My Nokia 3315 phone was smashed apart in everyway possible. Obviously we Hit hard. My personal ground hog day😪 everyday something reminds me of that horrible day. Not sure how I wasn't killed. My knees & elbow cripple me with painful arthritis. I was 17 when it happened now 35. But gotta respect & appreciate a clean .... still driven daily surviver. Its a credit to grandfather how clean his old XG xr6 looks. Be a good ute for Someone who appreciates the shape of that decade & some 😉

@@jamesfrench7299 yes mate, Hydratrak lsd diff, dual fuel tanks, 126liter, Hd raised suspension, firestone allterain tyres, Donaldson air cleaner, underbody bash plate and plenty of underbody mudflaps that protect underbody from rock damage, I have a hot chilli red auto and a white manual all 3 seaters.

Great review Ross reviews, good to see something different. It’s amazing to think that Ford carried this Falcon Ute / panel van since 1979 with only cosmetic upgrades (namely the front end & interior) up until the mid 90’s. You would see these everywhere in suburban Sydney, as it was popular with the tradies ( Plumbers & Electrician preferred the Panel van) , not to mention the Police up until the early 1990’s when the Holden rodeo took over as the preferred choice for paddy wagons.

The thing was 148kw in a ute was powerful in the mid 90s, when you think the Japanese offerings with there non turbo diesel were probably putting out 60 or 70kw!

Main difference was the XF had the crossflow 4.1 6 , carby motor that was rigged for EFI in the later years before going to this ohc 4litre fuel injection in the XG and XH

@@smithy2probably had a good reason to park it at the time? Both door handles broken perhaps? Rust? AU must of had forte good reasons to send it to be killed & gone for ever.

@@DoctorWEBB it got defected for an exhaust leak so i couldnt drive it for a bit, it wouldnt have passed inspection, then both doors had rusted hinges, engine was whipped, but handles were pretty new not damaged 😁👍🏼

Just great to c a great American in Australia. Tell more to move here. Back in the late 80's we would put the front and rear end of the XF on a XD and we called them the XD update. Looking back I laugh as the XD differently looks better but hey. Only let down for those car's was how easy they were to steal. I mean a simple nail file would do it.

This ute body style was used from the XF to the EL generations which was 14 years old by the end of EL production! Also, you should review a car called Nissan "The Ute"... It's pretty much a badge engineered Falcon and I'm not kidding on the name! BTW, it will be really hard to find since they never sold many!

I thought they were called the Nissan Matilda. I saw one when newly introduced at the motor show in Sydney and they hardly made an effort to disguise what it was. It even said Ford Motor Company of Australia on the compliance plate.

Yeah long neck Beers go along with helping stretch for that Longreach across... to open the opposite door because the handles broken. 🤣 The radios were also smart. Codes stopped crooks from playing cassettes & changing your presets. Key looked like a weird flat blade it was so advanced. Dip sticks couldn't start the falcon & Dick Johnson was the turtle inside your hard Shell. You always had Dick on your mind , shirt & hat. Old wrinkled dick #18 Shell your soul. Xr6s all the way through were different seats, same HP with the ba on, heck, they only had manual rear windows on ba-f xr6s too. And different suspension tune of course. And given the xg dates back to the xd falcon of 1978, it's not that uncommon.
