one interesting fact about this engine that not many people know is that the 5.4 'Triton' engine in America is not the same as our 'Boss' V8 here in Australia, we actually used the blocks from the Mustang Cobra & GT500, then designed our own heads/cams/manifolds to suit!

I’ve got an FPV FG Super Pursuit 315kW (422+HP has Di Filipo custom exhaust from heads to exhaust tip) even with brand new tyres it has caught me out a few times in the wet even with Traction Control and it has only been my rally driving experience from the 70-80s that has saved the day!!! The more power you have the more you need to take care when the road is wet as things happen very fast with power and a little bit of speed!!! This is mainly after fresh rain, once its rained for a few days and the oil has washed away its not too bad. These cars are DEFINITELY NOT FOR P platers nor those who don’t have a lot of all weather driving experience With performance vehicles. I’ve got between 4.5 and 5 million miles on and off road since 1971.

The E Series Falcons were notorious for being very different animals in the wet. The first week I had mine I took a bend at what I thought was "normal speed" and ended up doing a 180 into a fence. After that I was put on notice. I tried a few different things, lowering the suspension getting better tyres, but the car still had a tendency to aquaplane in the wet with very little encouragement. Interestingly a bag of cement in the boot helped tremendously with road holding for the rear wheels. XR8 Falcon utes had leaf springs in the rear which didn't help compared to the IRS of the sedans, but again a bag of cement or two would help the rear stay planted.

Hey Ross, I have the FG XR6T Ute, manual. I've found the turbo to be a bit more crazy in the wet than the V8. If you release clutch too quick at around 2000 it will be nothing but wheelspin, even with the traction control on. But like you proved in the video, drive with a good head on your shoulders and it shouldn't be a problem. I noticed your old tyres were Achilles, which were also on mine when bought it. So old, they had turned purple and no grip in the wet. I've used Nittos, Firestones and Goodyears since then, all have been worlds better than old rotten Achilles tyres!
@RossReviewsau4 жыл бұрын
yes i would agree the XR6T is a bit crazier when the boost hits :) yes that's what i was thinking that my old tires must have been very old lol since i bought it with them... i'll have to chuck them on again and burn em down soon lol would be irresponsible to sell them to anyone in that dangerous state ;p

My BF XR6 Turbo with a few minor mods and a ZF use to step out when planting it at 50-60km/h on dry tar and in the wet with traction control off it was quite scary, even dangerous in the wrong hands, etc it would still fight the stability/traction control and step out as well, it was loads of fun, but I still prefer my XR8s for daily driving, the sound and the bonnet bulge are 🤤🤤 and they are powerful enough when paired with the ZF

You should try a ba turbo ute running higher boost even with good tyres you take off from a standing start as quick as you can in the wet or dry without wheelspin and all is ok then all this boost comes on and the rear wheels turn into Usain Bolt. You have to be extremely cautious to make sure you keep the throttle light when overtaking at highway speeds in the wet as with no traction control and leaf springs in the rear 540nm+ of torque will easily light the back wheels up at hway speed.

If you have any exhaust mods you are best to have a performance air filter. My 04 has the 5 speed, K&N Pod inside SS Widemouth cold air intake, Pacemaker Headers, Genie turbo mufflers and i can hook up until 3rd in the wet, the power delivery of the 5.4 is kinda slow to come on but once its in it's power range it's a screamer. Still chillin in Albany waiting for you to come do a road trip ride. I can organise at least 5 or 6 more xr8's and 6t's.

Getting the cheapest tyres available is not a good idea, especially with a RWD V8 or turbo. Check out some tyre comparison reviews, stopping distances in the dry can be 6-10m more on the cheap tyres. That's the difference between injuring/killing a pedestrian & a near miss. At least get good quality, name brand tyres for the front, that's where the majority of braking force happens! Great channel, love the Ute sounds great!

Does skid in carpark. Police: ........🤷♂️ Zacbaldy parks up with the boys Police: ooooof😲
260Kw I'd a big step up over 162Kw in my bog standard 1992 Fairlane V8. Try 61Kw and 122nm of torque in my 1.6 litre automatic Laser!!
@RossReviewsau4 жыл бұрын
it's still a good amount of power its just the way it puts it down i guess could be better.. few bolt ons should fix that
@jamesfrench72994 жыл бұрын
Tall gearing would give it a nice burst of linear acceleration off the mark. That's an asset in this vehicle. Why do you want to break traction so easily?
@RossReviewsau4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesfrench7299 haah i like to be on my toes in my cars i guess lol its a rush when your fighting for traction in a car :)

Ross Reviews worn tyres are an easy skein solution for you!
@jamesfrench72994 жыл бұрын
Remember people pay to much attention to on paper peak figures and don't consider delivery. Example my 89 Laser peak power it's at 5000 rpm but the kicker is peak torque at only 2500 Rom, hence why you only need to tap the accelerator to move off satisfactorily. Your car "suffers" from tall gearing rather than lack of power. A shorter diff ratio will give it a jumpier feel.

not as bad as ya might think.. i seem to get around 500km to a tank. n i dont drive it slow lol expensive to fill tho as it requires 98 fuel

@@RossReviewsau interesting since I have a fg G6 Na which does 14L per 100km which is quite a bit and I wanna get an xr8 when I get my fulls but dunno how the fuel consumption is. Also didn't know you had to use 98. Can't you use 95?
@RossReviewsau4 жыл бұрын
@@sihongjiang9809 ya i would bet they are not much different on fuel.. i use 98 as the owner before only used it.. i think you could get away with 95 but i wouldn't recommend 91.. i used it once in a emergency and car didnt idle right till i got new fuel
@mrbrad46373 жыл бұрын
@@sihongjiang9809 you can use 95, but I always use 98 in my XR8s.. If it's the 290 motor you should really use 98 due to the compression ratio for memory.. I wouldn't ever use 91 though, it even says only premium 95ron minimum recommend in the book.. I find 98 gives better economy too

DY DY May wanna double check again. As I’m pretty sure in Vic it’s returned to power to weight ratio rules recently And is no longer the old blanket rule of No v8’s at all. That being said a Ba Xr8 is likely still prohibited for p platers. But less powerful v8’s should be fine like the early model Au Xr8’s with 185kw’s or any older and less powerful v8’s than that should be fine now.
@DYDY-ft2xq4 жыл бұрын
jake cliff yeah, but I always wanted an ss or xr8. I just fall in love with the sound of it, now I’m stuck with a v6 that sounds like fart😅
@Cliffy16164 жыл бұрын
DY DY yeah I get that. I finished up on my P’s a few years ago and the No V8’s rule was just stupid. I had an old Xc wagon with a 351 Cleveland that sounded great, but wasn’t “allowed” to drive it since no V8’s. Even though my daily at the time a Ba Xr6 was much quicker than the old V8. But yeah a shame you can’t have a Ba Xr8 or equivalent SS on your p’s.
