We have a 2004 Calais V8 in our family. It has an ECU re tune to suit the Remus exhaust. 104,000kms, and we really, really look after it. The way it woofles away from the lights, while still being classy as a commodore can be,lol, yeah it brings a smile. Dark blue, standard height with 18 inch chrome wheels to match the pinstripes and chrome 'Calais' badge on the rear panels.

Great review of 2 of the best modern Aussie cars. I’d like to own both of them. As you said, one for around town and the other for the highways and quarter miles. The V8 sure does sound the best. Interesting to see that the 0-100s were similar.

Having owned a B series f6 typhoon. I have to agree with everything you said. I think they fixed the issue of boost coming on too late in the rev range with the FG by using a smaller turbo? If i was to buy one of these now, id probably go with the VZ clubby. Peak aussie/tough exterior styling in my opinion.

Id take both. The f6 is great for speed but man i love V8s. Even slow v8s, as long as you have that sound, it makes life happy.

It's more about power delivery rather than just outright power. I was next to an F6 once in my VE SS and every time we both hit the throttle, my engine would respond instantly while his always had a slight delay before boost arrived. That delay though meant I pulled away 2-3 car lengths every time, even though he had more power than me, and on a longer stretch he would eventually overtake me.

The only reason I got my VF SS ute brand new and not XR6T new was the interior, it just felt so out of date and where I sat everyday that was the difference and as much as I wanted the turbo, I just hated thee inside

I would agree that the 5.4 litre boss motor was a slug if you got the 260kw. But if you got the 290kw and up it wasn’t! Plus all motor’s gain a lot from bolt on mods. GM LS V. Ford V8’s is the cost factor. Years ago LS motors were a lot cheaper to bolt mods on, get a tune, work the internals on cheaper budget. A lot less than what you could on a boss or coyote. Now it’s fairly similar in pricing. As Arnott’s said “There’s no substitute for quality!” I’m picking the Ford Barra 6, Boss 290kw and up, plus coyote.

I like the R8 VZ because it doesn't look like a poverty spec S pac. On the front. The Typhoon looks like a XR6 bodykit with different badges. Personally I'm more into old-school but I'd take the R8 ANYDAY Holden tuff💪

I have an unregistered typhoon ute with a little bit of front end damaged in my dad's factory unit, I also have a 50th annivers converted to 6 speed manual instead of 6 speed sequential automatic so for me obviously , it has always been ford's, starting with the XW 351 the XC 351 coup next and then the XC 351 these are the cars I wish I still had not knowing that then as a young man how quickly they would become rare ,and valuable but I love all the Ford's except the XB load of rubbish.but I do like the look of the V8 Commodore engine although I do not like Commodores but it is all personal choice I guess whatever you like man just enjoy they won't be around forever unfortunately.so just enjoy do not destroy

i have always imagined what a 6 Cylinder HSV would be like, and if it would actually sell, because if you get a HSV you get it for the V8. They did think about doing a ZB HSV using the twin turbo LF3 from Cadillac but was too complicated to fit onto the chassis and it electronics.
