@zrspangle5 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowFri3nd straight up too good
@nicholasperkins46555 жыл бұрын
@@zrspangle not exactly. Racing leagues set rules based on engine volume among other things, and the hp/volume for a wankel is much greater than for any other piston engine. That creates an unfair advantage for other engines which they try to incorporate into racing as many types as possible. It's perfectly fine to race with a V8 vs an inline 6 or Boxer 6 in certain leagues as long as the volume has the same limit. Allowing rotaries would pretty much throw that equality out the window. Everyone would use rotary and it technically would be bad for car companies because they wouldn't have incentive to test their consumer car engine on a track. It would overall create a bad car culture in terms of providing data for consumer engines. I love the wankel engine. It is a genius concept but because it is too inefficient( unless mazda makes a miracle with a skyactive 10 wankel) and doesn't pass current EPA standards, allowing it in races would severely hurt the engineering car companies use for regular consumers. The race track is not just a competition but also a science experiment.

I love my RX8, the rotary is already a black-sheep genre of cars but the RX8 is the black sheep of that tiny segment of the market. It's an underdog and an utterly enjoyable one, love it!
@pauljanssen75945 ай бұрын
The main reason why a rotary engine will never be efficient is the combustion chamber designed this is the main reason and then you have seal problems the Apex seal is your main compression seal. The only reason the RX rotary engines cane popular was the high RPMs they would turn. I used to be the main tune up for a business that worked on rotary Mazda if it didn't turn a certain RPM it went back to see what was still wrong. We used to make our own custom plug wires at that time because nobody had the quality we use nothing but Belgium plug wire I literally would make a whole set of wires in less than 15 minutes. It was a fun job. I always had a vehicle ready at 10:00 to test drive down to McDonald's and get a couple hamburgers and a coke with McDonald's made real food, course disrespect in the late seventies early eighties.

I loved my 89 GXL, after 100k miles the apex seals started to go out. A friend that was part of an RX7 club told me to put an ounce of trans fluid into the engine through the upper spark plug holes once a week(if it sat longer than 24 hours it would sometimes lose compression) after that I was able to get a few more years of use out of it. Was in high school still so didn't have enough to fix it right. Wish I still had it, was in beautiful condition, one owner.

How to have a reliable rotary engined vehicle: Step one; basic regular maintenance like any other car, just stay on top of it. Step 2; regular beatings are required, unlike piston engines that can’t maintain high rpm for long periods of time and have to be babied to actually last, rotarys are the opposite. They literally do not care how hard you beat on them. Step 3; premix, research it, understand why it’s beneficial. It’s not required, but it helps. Step 4; in the event of apex seal failure, look for the root cause. The apex seal did not cause the failure (nor have they ever during their entire production run with Mazda), something external to the engine failed, address and fix it preferably before catastrophic failure occurs) and keep brapping. Step 5; realize that you are driving a sports car and not some shit beater Honda and maintenance of the car (besides the engine) will be elevated and parts will cost more in most cases. As someone that relies on, daily drives and only owns two rotary powered vehicles (1980 SA22C and 2010 RX-8 R3) I can confidently say that they are absolutely reliable and dependable as daily A to B cars (so long as you’re not a total moron). They aren’t perfect and not as cheap to own as many other cars, but they are very fun and worth every penny you put into them (although you will never ever see those pennies again).

Suzuki built a rotary motorcycle, the RE5, but they didn't trust their mechanics to work on it. The repair procedure was to pull the engine, place it in a wooden crate, ship it to Japan, and await return. There is a small cult following for the bike online now, which is pretty cool.

One thing to note about Wankel rotaries is that they do have some applications outside of cars where they are absolutely awesome. One thing a rotary can do that a piston engine has a lot more trouble doing is running full bore for hours on end. Without pistons slamming back and forth, you can just redline the suckers forever. This makes the wankel awesome for prop planes where the engine load is high and continuous for long stretches. They also work great as small, high output generators so they're certainly not dead but in cars, smooth revving and high rpm is mostly a luxury. Quick bursts of power from piston engines is all you need.
@sandervanderkammen92303 жыл бұрын
Wankel engines are obsolete because they have no advantages. Wankel engines are not used in generator applications because of their horrendously bad fuel consumption and they have never been used in passenger aircraft applications because of unacceptable reliability problems which make them unsafe for planes carrying passengers.

And so does everyone at every gas station I stop into. One of my favorite things is the pops from the exhaust. No tuned firecrackers in a coffee can stuff.
