Hey Luke if you try the 3 step 3M line up, compound/machine polish/ultra fine polish and switching from wool to foam to light blue foam pad the results will finish down to the swirl/hologram free finish you are going after. That’s what we used at the production body shop where I use to work.

Luke...I have a great tip for u...courtesy of apex auto detail. Use a microfiber applicator to apply your compound first...like you are applying a wax...spray your favorite detail spray on the pad to condition it...then buff the panel...no more sling and no more spurring your pad after every pass...more efficient...great vid by the way

Ive been detailing Yachts for 20 years and use a Makita rotary with a 2 sided wool pad because it is a little more give to it and less likely to burn the paint.Gelcoat is definitely a different animal all together and needs the aggressiveness of a rotary but can be finished using a DA.I also swear by Griot's compounds.

Remove the backing plate, add a 5/8", 3/4" long nut to the spindle and use double-sided wool pads that are balanced. You'll double your overall feel of control being that much closer to the surface. The little things.

Great intro to the rotary. The DeWalt is really a nice machine. First time using mine I was shocked at how smooth a rotary is. None of the annoying vibration that a DA has. I have three DA polishers and all of them stall easily, which means I am wasting my time. From now on it's DA for wax application only, or for final polishing if there is any haze or any buffer trails. Another cool thing about rotaries is that you can find pads in any size from 1" to 7" and probably even larger.

Stopped at a body shop today to get a test panel for new Maxshine rotary I have yet to turn on. They were great! Got me a free black jeep hood with a minor bent corner. They told me I could grab whatever I wanted from the pile. Then their buffing expert with 35 years experience gave me a tutorial with his rotary and wool pad and explained his system with the sanding steps. Very cool of them. Question: Why do you normally see 5 or 6 inch pads on a DA but 7 or 9 inch on a rotary? I would think a 5 or 6 on a rotary would give you a little more control and less chance of absent mindedly burning an edge. I am going to purposely burn through the hood to test. I have a Griots 8 and 6 but it seems to take forever to get defects out with many passes at slow arm speed at buffer at 4 or 4.5. Of course I have only done 4 cars and a delivery truck so far so is probably my technique. Doing my brothers Kelmark kit car next week and not sure what the paint is but will test a section carefully first. I also see a friends boat in my future hence I wanted to learn the rotary. Thanks for all the instruction. You are one of the first detailers I found on KZbin and I have learned quite a bit from your videos. Final note: I asked the body shop expert what is meant by "body shop safe", he said it means no silicone as that will find its way to the paint booth and cause "fish eyes" in the paint. I thought the term meant it had no waxes or silicone so that you could coat the car after polishing it.

@@bobbyghost2594 Its not that bad but the wool pad is more aggressive than foam. You can get a softer cut wool pad for polishing. I use a harbor freight rotary with foam pads and a mild cut polish and a sealant with ultra fine polish (cleaner) and it saves hours over a DA polisher. BOSS PAINTER has some old videos on buffer pads and using compound on wool, he is an expert and does not use a DA to cut & buff. Hope this helps.

Luke, have you thought about investing in a paint thickness gauge? Worth it’s weight in gold. I own one and would not touch a car without using it first to get an idea how thick the paint is. Will only tell you total thickness (base+clear) but it still extremely useful. Decent ones on Amazon for about $120-130. Cheers.

Great video! I've always been pretty leery towards using a rotary buffer but it doesn't seem that bad after all. I've already got a Griot's garage DA so I guess I may want to invest in the Dewalt at some point soon for a companion tool. Out of curiosity, I noticed you used the Show Car compound/polish instead of the Meguires M105 and M205 are you not using those anymore? If so, what's the pros/cons of each product line?

Luke, thank you for such a great video. I am a hobbiest detailer. 2 questions. 1. Is a DA the same as an orbital. 2. I definitely understand wool pad for rotary on a compound job. When polishing would you use orbital with foam pad? Thank you.
@bluegrasskid4835
@bluegrasskid4835 Жыл бұрын
There are two types of Dual Action (DA) polishers, A) Random Orbital DA's (by far the most common of the 2) and generally what people are referring to when they say DA and B) Forced Rotation DA's, sometimes called Gear Driven DA, the Flex 3401 is the most common of these. When using the Random Orbital DA (or forced rotation for that matter), you can use wool but would not want to use the wool pad he is using there, it is specifically for a rotary and probably would not give very good results on a DA. Rupes makes some good wool pads for DA's. Lake Country I believe does too but double check they are intended for DA use before purchasing.

This notion that a rotary is scary to car guys explains a bunch. In the boat world, it's just what you do. When hiring detailing staff, the lack of knowledge on this tool for "detailers" I always found odd. Then again, I'm scared of car paint so... Still, cool vids! Love your vids. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5PUiZlpabKtlZI If I may add: The tools and products, pads and such are less important than technique. That and what you're comfortable with. I only hire confident waxers, even if they suck on the "interview". Typically takes car guys 6 months to be as good on a boat as they are at cars. I can teach the basics to perfection in 2-3 days but the whole class is months long. www.deckhanddetailing.com FYI, that DWP849x you're using... You're welcome. We worked with DeWalt to make that. Basically called them up with 17 improvements, they used 14 and bam! Awesome tool!
