Three identical solid cylinders are kept as shown on a horizontal surface. Find the initial acceleration of topmost cylinder after the system is released from rest for the two cases:
a) There is friction between the two cylinders and ground but there is no friction between the cylinders such that there is no slipping between ground and the two cylinders.
b) There is no friction with ground but there is friction between the cylinders such that there is no slipping between the cylinders. Advanced problems Playlist

Sir..in second case for no slipping condition, I equated the acceleration components in x axis rather than y axis...is that correct??

Sir in first case I tried by considering movement of COM of upper sphere as x and lower sphere as y and related them geometrically, followed by conserving energy, and then differentiating the whole equation to get the same answer. Method legit?

Hmm, cengage is a good option. It's oriented for JEE and has many problems of Krotov and Irodov inside it already along with other challenging problem. But that book is big as hell so you need a lot of time to solve it.

Won't the torque of (mg of upper cylinder) should also be considered for torque calculation about the center of mass of the lower cylinder?
@PhysicswithAkashGoyal
@PhysicswithAkashGoyal 3 жыл бұрын
No. I have taken one cylinder as a system for writing equations. In addition to this system of two cylinders is not a rigid system as distance between two points in the two cylinders can vary with time so it will be meaningless to write torque equation for two cylinders.
