Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
Posting a couple videos on interesting versions of the Roth-Steyr pistols recently made me think about just how nice of a pistol the 1907 is to shoot, So, I figured I'd bring it out to the monthly Backup Gun Match. Alas, I had ammo from two different lots, one of which would not reliably cycle the gun. This led to a lot of malfunction clearing and a pretty dismal score...

Inherited a 100 year old pocket watch that probably hadn't run in 80 years. Didn't expect it to run, but while moving it around to polish it - damn, that thing started ticking. Wound it up, it ran fine. At that age it did need to be cleaned, though. The watchmaker told me it ran because the original whale oil was still there, and it doesn't degrade no matter how old it gets. Unfortunately the movement did need to be cleaned, and now I have regular modern oil. I don't want to nuke any whales for the oil, but I am amazed at what Mother Nature could accomplish that our tech cannot.

Only...it was a backup gun for the Habsburg imperial cavalrymen carrying it because the pistols were considered secondary weapons to the sword and/or lance still. Funny that.
@Taolan8472
@Taolan8472 3 жыл бұрын
Well no, with the detachable stock and a bandolier of clips, this is easily a primary weapon for a cavalry or artillery officer.
@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 3 жыл бұрын
@@Taolan8472 If you were a cavalry officer, your training and tradition saw pistols as a circumstantial tool mostly for those times when you really wanted an enemy to die faster than you could close with your melee weapon. Maybe you see an ally about to be stabbed in the back over 30 feet away, so that is when you pull your pistol and shoot. Otherwise, you are expected to literally cut down your foes because that is the civilized thing to do. Thus, while cavalry alone saw pistols as offensive weapons, they were still seen as secondary to sword, lance, and/or carbine depending on the type of cavalry one was.

I wonder if Midway Arms might manufacture this calibre? They usually produce good ammo. Years ago I had a C96 Mauser pistol with a tight action; it was a large ring version. It ran good on FN and Indian ammo; other companies ammunition didn't operate it very well including original DWM ammo. Older DWM ammo was made with "balloon head" cases and l had one case that exploded in the rear of the brass breaking the extractor and magazine spring.

I love how smooth the stripper clips are for this gun, idk if that’s due to technique, or quality of ammo or clips but it’s just so satisfying

That was the pistol I fell in love with in the 70s when The American Rifleman mag did a guns of the Austro Hungarian War if I remember correctly. If I ever had the chance and the funds I would buy one. Still love that lovely gun.

Wooow that's cool. Love seeing these old handguns in action. A bummer that it didn't run well this time. Also I would argue that the gun is indeed a backup gun because it wouldn't have been the primary weapon of the cavalry man

Said it before ill say it again. Modern repro chambered for 9mm would sell really well in certain markets. I would suggest the rear sight block be replaceable though so you could run a dot sight.
