Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
A little while back during the summer I went to our monthly Backup Gun Match with, of all things, a Taurus Curve. Why do I even own one of those? Well, I found one new in the box at a local gun show for less than $200. Because it is such an unusual gun in a bunch of ways, I figured it really deserved a place in the Forgotten Weapons Collection. So, I bought it, and just left it in the box. Several months later, debating what to run at the match, I realized I still had that Curve, still unfired in the box. Well, 90%+ of the people who bought one of those would have done nothing but load a magazine and stick it in a pocket, so why not run it just that way? All I did was check to make sure the laser's batteries were still working.
...not that the laser ended up making any difference. This was my worst Backup Gun Match that I can remember. Hopefully all the failure is at least entertaining!
Also, thanks to Roger for rescuing me with his G1 Yeet Cannon on the last stage!

@@UTubeHandlesSuck honestly, Paul Harrell had a good video about dealing with cheap guns, I think that it was his highpoint video. You don't even bother shooting. You just work the action by hand. It's actually a terribly clever means to give the other guy the idea that he had the upper hand, only to pull out his actual piece. To be fair, while clever, it wasn't entirely original; Ian largely came up with the idea late one evening, around 7:00 AM, as his new bottle of rather smooth scotch was curiously empty, while watching the sword fight scene from The Princess Bride ( this scene, in fact : kzbin.info/www/bejne/onSZlZqqd7ppfdU ). Fortunately he sobered up just enough to ask someone to "Yeet him" prior to attempting this feat in the third round of competition a few hours later that day. He was obviously only sober enough to shoot competitively, without any actual sights, and was forced to take an Uber home since he was obviously in no shape to drive. On a side note, it was mostly agreed that this wasn't Ian's fault and most reasonable people still blame Karl for encouraging bad behavior by providing said "Yeeting" and not having done his part to drink the other half of the scotch. Karl will be required to use solely French firearms in matches for the foreseeable future.

Stephen Williams the customer service point is a good one. There are a number of people with Taurus pistols that have had very good experiences. There are also a number, my impression is perhaps more than some other brands percentage wise, that haven’t had as good of a time. I have yet to hear from someone that sent a pistol in to Taurus that didn’t have a hell of a time in getting a response and then in getting the pistol back in a reasonable timeframe. Most of what I read is 6 months + turnaround, which sucks. I think HiPoint accepts what they are, a low cost firearm made of cheaper materials. That’s fine and they back up their product when there is a problem. My gripe with Taurus is they make pistols that feel and look like they compete with more expensive pistols, but they don’t seem to back them up like the manufacturers of those more expensive pistols.

To be fair, he took it right from the box, with no familiarity. If it were properly oiled, and perhaps try a variety of ammo to find what it shoots best, could improve its performance. It’s still a piece of junk, but may have faired better with some effort. And I don’t get the weak laser sights, why bother? People think lasers are somehow foolproof, but I’ve got one on my pistol that is bright enough to see at 30+ yards, and no one shoots well with it without a lot of practice. Lasers take some getting used to, some good 3 dot sights are hard to beat.

My dad has one, and it only malfunctions if you run steel case ammo through it (as expected), so don't make judgements about the reliability from this sample size of 1. But a surprisingly helpful thing to do is to use the Loaded Chamber Indicator as an impromptu iron sight. Makes hitting things easier beyong point-shooting range. But if you want something that isn't extremely niche and is actually versatile, a Yeet Cannon is a definitely better choice in every way (except concealability).

I understand the purpose of testing it this way, but geez imagine the amount of metal shavings and gunpowder-laden grease that thing has in it right out of the box, being a Taurus. I imagine it would be at least somewhat useful after a decent cleaning. That's typically why South American guns come with an instruction manual that says "Step 1: Scrub the hell out of it and oil every moving surface"

The problem is that the people who buy this are NOT going to clean and oil it. But I understand where you are coming from.

I agree. I would like to have seen how the gun performed cleaned and oiled. I understand the attempt at replicating an apathetic owner, but now you have two variables in your experiment, so we don’t know if the malfunctions are due to the gun or due to the failure to properly clean and lube the gun. I actually thought about getting one of these when they came out to use as back-up - slip it in a boot or put it in an overcoat pocket while my main gun is on my waist with my coat buttoned over it.
