These are marvellous pistols, originally designed for cavalry they have a very positive trigger pull; I imagine it was made so strong to avoid the misfortune of a rider having a negligent discharge and shooting his horse in the back of the head! They were adopted by early aircrew as well. I had the good fortune to document and photograph one of these pistols, with a leather holster I think, for "Explosion! the Museum of Naval Firepower" in Gosport, Hamshire, UK. (Well worth a visit). As far as I remember it was surrendered by a German Naval Officer in 1918.

The whole story of how the gun got ordered sounds very much Austrian. Comission decides something. Comission goes home and does nothing for a year and then requests some minor changes. Decission is delegated upwards and nothing happens for another one and a half years. Decission is adopted having probably taken double or tripple the time necessary. Come to think of it, this also perfectly describes the process of how houseworks or repairs are done in my home.
