Nice shots of this class knifing through rough seas. Spent two and half years on HMS Falmouth, watchkeeping as engine room chief. Good old fashioned steam power, run at high power 24/7 no problem.

The three Rothesay Frigates served the South African Navy well. Despite an arms embargo against South Africa, the SA Navy managed to upgrade and refit their three frigates. In the 80's South Africa had a formidable Navy. Sadly no more.

The Wasp helicopter 426 at 3:42 belonged to HMS Arethusa F38. I had the pleasure of joining it as my first ship in December 1979 as a 17 year old. I had some of the best times of my life on that ship. HMS Sheffield was my ship of choice but i dropped a mark in my final ADAWS exam in Dryad, SMOPS and was beaten to it by a lad from the city of Sheffield. He survived the Falklands but i heard he left the navy shortly after. I went on to complete 25 yrs in the RN followed by 18 in the RFA.

My dad served on many Leander class frigates (12I) The bridge section on the Rothesay is a bit marmite for me. I really don't know if I dig it, or not. 🤔 I think the leander nails the look using this platform.

Note: The Westland Wasp MATCH helicopter was only a stand-off weapon delivery system. It could not and did not carry a dipping sonar. That was the much bigger Wessex.

It was HMS Berwick F115( never get's a mention) that in 1966 did anti communist patrol in the Malacca Straights. Also 56 days in Indian Ocean on Biera Patrol. Stopped Mauella tanker on Easter Sunday taking oil for Rhodesia. It was not HMS Brighton.

I was Navigators Yeoman in HMS Brighton from late 1963 to early 1966. We were part of the 30th Escort Squadron with HMS Falmouth, HMS Aisne and a C class destroyer. In 1963 we were in the Mediterranean and ordered to Singapore because of the Indonesian crisis, came back to Malta for Christmas then home for leave and back to Singapore for most of 1964 then home for Christmas leave. Back to Singapore for 1965, home for Christmas and paid off in 1966. For junior ratings accommodation was appalling with mostly hammock sleeping and no air conditioning. A hard working but a happy ship and I have more fond memories of my time in her than any of my other ships during 25 years of service.

I spent a couple of years on one of Australia’s Rothesays(River class Mod DE, HMAS Stuart to be precise), and I can vouch for the seakeeping ability of these ships! They were pretty long in the tooth by then(Yarra had already paid off), but they could handle big seas better than the other 2 bigger classes of warships we had.

I was on the HMAS Swan, It was only many years later that it started to dawn on me that we had to get to about 1000 yards to sink a sub with those Limbo mortars.

@@TheWareek Fluffy Duck! Yeah, Limbo was of limited use, though it was long gone and replaced with Mk32 tubes by the time I joined up. I was taught they were just a point defence system too, but at least it was more than 1000yds.

@@TheWareek My mess was 3Pport on Stuart, and in the roughers the screws would come out of the water beneath us and we’d get the noise and vibrations from the blades hitting the surface. We did get quite a bit of roll too. Didn’t Swan and Torrens have a kind of roll stability system built in? I know the earlier 4 Rivers didn’t. I remember seeing 2 blokes nearly get pushed overboard by a sliding pallet of 4.5 shells during a RAS with Success with the swell coming from side on. Whatever, I’d rather have been on Stuart in the roughers than a DDG or FFG.

Great video. These ships were excellent in their primary role: good seakeeping qualities; quiet; and with a good sonar fit. I'll express a preference for 15-minute videos, which I tend to watch in one go. P.S. I can still remember PLYMOUTH coming into San Carlos Water, after being hit by bombs.

At 12.10 you mention HMS Yarmouth shooting down a Skyhawk, and that it may have been a rapier or a blow pipe missile that actually scored the kill. I know one of the Royal Marines awarded a medal for that incident, sharing the claim for the kill with Yarmouth as he was the person firing the Blow pipe!

Slight error, the Wasp didn't have a dipping sonar, it was guided to the drop site by a helicoper controller based in information from the hull based sonar.I was flight deck officer in HMS Plymouth from '75 to '77 so should know.

HMS YARMOUTH was long stop rescue ship for Apollo 13 on her faiied Moon Flight in April 1071. YARMOUTH was ordered to "proceed with utmost despatch" a thousand miles into the Indian Ocean from her UN blockade off Beira. Communications were poor to non existant and instruction had to be taken down in morse code with pencil and paper on how to rescue the broken Space Craft. Luckily it came down in middle of US Navy carrier force in the Pacific with full TV cover. Our simple Kodak Box Brownie camera and first aid facilites were not required

When talking about the caliber of ammo used in guns, you need to be more specific. Even more so if it's older weapons systems when there was even more variance in ammo calibers. Simply saying 20mm isn't useful.

People for the most part are going to know an Oerlikon S will fire Oerlikon S ammunition. It did have the advantage of being the only 20mm shipboard gun in use by the RN at the time, the later KAA coming later.
