I had 2 GMD in my career in the RN. ANTRIM and FIFE. They were very social ships best Ports always a senior 4 ring Captain in charge. After a refit and through FOST it followed that they deployed to the far east. NORFOLK went east in 1976. ANTRIM 1975 as guard ship for HMRY in the carribean then refitted at PORTSMOUTH dockyard. 1979 we went east to CHINA and Japan. GLAMORGAN went to ASIA 1980. HMS FIFE refitted Portsmouth. EXOCET was fitted in place of B turret. Refit was completed November 1982 . HMS GLAMORGAN was hit by an argentine Exocet. and was damaged badly. It was fortunate she was in a tight turn to stbd as if the excocet hit her full on. it was possible that it would have entered the sea slug magazine. That would make a HOOD scenario. The ships company of HMS Glamorgan were as one to repair a ship after such damage. I take my hat off to them.

Just as a hint, if you're interested in a little bit more realism and some time to talk, you can change both the surface and subsurface spawn ranges in the settings menu in DotMod. It can make for some interesting scenarios with NATO vs Pact vessels where the Soviets can outrange the NATO ASCMs and provide for some excitement where you're being shot but can't shoot back.

Utter nonsense. I was actually on The Devonshire and Exocet was our main and best weapon. You've clearly never served. Fucking Walt!!
@stephennelmes45574 ай бұрын
I don't know if Devonshire had exocet or not, ( Google it ) but their weapons ( County Class) were crap. Seaslug 18 NM range, beam rider, slow to load, only one fired at a time,..crap. Seacat 3 NM range, subsonic so no chance at crossing targets. Exocet 22.5 NM range, again subsonic. 10 Exocet were fired in the late 80s, 2 never left the box, 3 had faulty altimeters hitting waves halfway to the target. Only 5 worked. And at the time the Soviet anti ship missiles had ranges of 160 NMs That's a bit crap. And the Fifes galley + JRDH was full of cock roaches.
@tomriley5790 Жыл бұрын
Whoever built this modd was extremely optimisitic. I remember listening to someone who was on one of the County class during the Falklands. Sea slug was described as being used as a "bird scarer" no chance of hitting anything but the sight of it being fired put off alot of pilots from going near it! Similarly Seacat (a visually guided SAM) had such a short range that it would just about start gaining on the enemy aircraft when the missile would run out of fuel. No real need to torpedo the Oscar - could have given the crew a chance to survive.

Great video as to the County Class Destroyer her SAM's are or where pretty bad 1st Gen SAM's... though hitting a Krivak with a Seaslug or 2 would cause them a slight issue as they weighed in at around 1 ton apiece and the propellent wasn't exactly exactly good for breathing though with all that metal hitting your ship at around Mach1 or so might be of more immediate concern. As to the Seacat this was the first operational point defence missile though saying that it was a good missile is an understatement as it was only capable of Mach 0.8 as it was designed from an anti-tank missile, but always a good idea to throw at the enemy to keep them confused... gun wise the Batch 1's came with 2 twin turrets and no exocets Batch 2's came with the exocets and the batch 1's had the B Turret replaced with Exocet. But for real fun look at how they moved the helo to the pad in rough weather it would have been an interesting time for all involved...

I served on the last one of these (Antrim ). 1) Seaslug was designed for high flying bombers. Its a beam riding guidance system You can only guide one at a time. So, why fire 2 ? There is also no way they could ever intercept an incoming missle. Also the "slug", designed in the 40's was only ever credited with one hit in all its life. A cow shed on the range in Wales where it went rogue. Devonshire had a Mk1 system and Antrim had a "better" Mk2 system. Both a total waste of space. Sea Cat - a joke of a system and was visually aimed with a radar assist. A CIWS ? A longboww would have better success. Exocet, obviously a modern weapon and effective but you only have 4 and no reload. So basically the only real weapon is the gun and small arms.
