Rotorua has a population of around 71,877 people. It's located three hours south east of Auckland in the North Island. It's nicknamed 'Roto Vegas' by locals. There's still some debate on where this nickname came from, but it's been around since the 1980s.

Rotovegas hasnt been around since the 80's as I was around there in those days...living the streets. Neither did the word Rota's. I left Rotorua in the late 90's. Paved roads through town werent around there then. All of us use to hang around Kingsize Game Parlours or Wizards. Shops like the Swap Shop & Dianna Dairies & The Majestic & Odean Theatres were around at the time. Games Lounge was our Billiards place.

I've been to Rotorua, and I've been to Las Vegas. The two have nothing in common. I'm still waiting for someone to explain why on earth they'd call Rotorua "Roto Vegas". Don't get me wrong, Rotorua is a beautiful, special place, but in my opinion calling it Roto Vegas does it a disservice by promoting the expectation of it having some similarity to the real Vegas. It doesn't.
