This rotten 1957 Chevy is getting it's final repair panel. When we dragged this car home it was rough and rotten from the door handles down. The car came with a pile of replacement sheetmetal except 1 lower quarter section.
These replacement panels are expensive! But I pulled the trigger and ordered the piece to be installed.
With all the repair panels stitched in place we moved onto modifying the headers. I wanted to run fender well headers on this Chevy LS. So I pulled out out a used set of big block Chevy headers and cut them up to fit LS exhaust flanges.

Dan, one of the biggest mistakes made by GM is not making a cross member for the 55-57',s... The transmission were to heavy to be hanging out in the air! Back in the late 60's the most I paid for a 57 was $275... Most of them I bought were around $100 or $150. All were in pretty good shape. The one I paid $275 for was a 2dr.ht. it was nice. Cooper or bronze factory color with an off white roof and had electric windshield wipers, all of my others had vacuum wipers. I also had a nice 2 dr. post 210. My first 57 was a 4dr.ht., black Beliar, my 2dr.ht. was a Belairs. Had a nice yellow station wagon that was a Beliar. One was a 150 with a 6 cylinder in it. One of my 210's had a 57 265 in it. Had an oil filter on the block, AC 141 long caster. 55 and 56's don't have oil filters on the block, remote on the driver's inner wheel wheel... Back when I was young I had over 12 57's growing up. I know a lot about 57's and the 283's and the 265's..., plus the early 327's, 275 hp-300hp. All 283 heads had small valves and ports compared to the 327 double hump heads. I didn't know any thing about powerglide, so I would change them over to stick shift. One of my 210's was a three speed on the column. I keep having the powerglide go out on me and had reverse only. The powerglide back then had a rear pump in the trans so you could push start the car if you needed to. Later years the rear pump was removed on the powerglide. I run a 2 speed powerglide in my race car, it's pretty fast! 66 SS Chevelle tube chassis car and is light, 2,370 lbs. with driver. Drag car only... Beautiful car!

I drove a 56 BelAir with a .060 over 283 with a Holley carb and a Duntov Solid Lifter cam and burnt out mufflers my senior year of high school in 67 . Sounded so Cool , not cool with a powerglide taking off but from 30 mph with the cam came to life the car was fast for the time period . I had tons of guys wanting to race but I just cruised and let the lopey sound of the engine get attention . God the good old days were so Cool . Great videos .

I just love the JC Witney Hood scoop be sure and keep it helps with the different theme of the car. I think about staring at the catolog everytime I see that hood. Its ugly hood but I love it. It brings back memories of dreaming about building hot rods when I was a child in the 70s. Your living the dream beside the super hard work but that is part of it. Half the fun of making a hot rod is working hard building it. It is a lot of entertainment watching you fit patch panels I just love watching it. The panels look even better than I thought they would . Bondo forgives a lot of stuff. Dont go crazy welding and think it not going to warp in the cold because it still will the cold is no match for the 10,000 degree welder. roughly 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, this still cooler than plasma torch welding, which can reach up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, but electric arcs are incredibly hot nonetheless. The cold weather would make cool fast between spot welding though. Dont destroy all your hard work by warping the new panels you cant weld big long welds. You have done a good job so far dont mess it up dude.

for the record, that car is not a pos. It's not a cheap import with a fart muffler. It's a 57 Chevrolet. :) As far as the $300 panel, in all fairness you got the car at an amazingly good deal. Even roached out a 57 under $5k US is a bargain these days. Ever since "cash for clunkers" and Covid/covus/covair the price of old cars and trucks has went to insane levels. (perhaps the shots have caused sellers to lose their minds idk). Personally, I am thoroughly impressed with what you bring in and restore. Many most of us cobblers would consider too far gone and wouldn't dare to touch.

Hi Dan & Danny. Christo Thomson here from South Africa (I wonder if you would know where that is). I love your content sir. Especially on the tri fives...and the 57 you are working on. Here in the Stycx we never had huge number of cars in the day...young country poor people etc etc. We therefore, if we do get hold of a piece of scrap car that is laying on a farm etc, it always will be a more door. I loved the vids on converting a 4 dr to a 2dr. It only we could have the access to the spares as you guys have. A 100 dollar item in your country would most probably cost 40 times that just to get it to my country. I recently needed front bearings for my 57 210.I could not find any local replacement. But luckily a friend live in San Diego. He oerdered some and are sending it with another guy to me as handluggage! It is crazy. But we try. Keep up the good work. I watch all your videos...Oh, andincidently, my 57 210 is the same colour as the graphics on your new T shirt promotion. Kind Regards!

I'm in the U.S., and I collect T shirts and hats from several different KZbin car channels. Would like to have some from yours. Unfortunately I wear an XXXL, and many places rarely ever have those. I'm not into bodywork myself, but I have seen guys install panels like that, and actually overlap the old panel with the edges of the new panel, then use body filler to smooth it out, kind of like how you do drywall. It's not perfectly straight, but it looks like it is. I'm not really a fan of headers on a street driven car. Like everybody else, I have had nightmares trying to make them fit, and the flanges where they bolt to the head tend to warp and leak.. I gave up and just use the stock manifolds, and make a couple of short header pipes that bolt onto the manifolds the same way the stock system does, then I can route the exhaust from there however I want it.

Great work! If you replaced the tip on your mig and you have to constantly straighten the whip out to make it weld? You may have to replace the Liner in the whip. Not to expensive but will weld like a new machine. Be sure to follow the directions to a T when installing the new liner if you do need one. Proper twisting of the whip is essential to trimming the liner to proper length. Also blowing the dust out of the machine helps performance. Watch out for any large capacitors. They will bite you hard.

Keep the heat on. Don't know how you work in the cold. I cant stand the cold and that is why I live in Florida. Keep up the great work. Love the way the car is coming out.

If you want something done you do it yourself.. that’s the way I have done projects myself.. Taking big block headers and making LS headers is a great accomplishment.. good work ! That motor should run a lot better the way you have set it up now ..
