@haner2940 Жыл бұрын
There`s literally no racial aspect, despite what you and some other people try to make up. The severe hazing culture in that fraternity did not make a difference between skin colors, and they severely abused generations of white students, Sanda was just one of many for them. It`s incredibly sad that he lost his life, but he was not singled out for his skin color or ethnicity. They made the other two guys do exactly the same terrible tasks as Sanda, they also urinated on them and tortured them the same way, and they made them drink possibly fatal amounts of fish sauce too. The only reason why they`re not dead is probably because they were lucky enough to throw up enough of it to not get a sodium overdose. Those frat guys are monsters, but they treated their white recruits just the same way as Sanda.

He got a three month jail sentence on top of a 20.000€ fine, while the people actually responsible for his death got a community service and 200-400€ fine. I think it’s absolutely absurd how being from a higher class family can determine your sentence and how someone trying to warn people and get justice gets a much higher sentence. Fraternities and sororities are the dumbest concepts I've ever heard. It doesn't matter what they can offer you, the possibility of getting killed or traumatized just for a few connections and "friends".... And then keep that hazing as secret? It's absurd. Of course I don't blame the victim, he saw that as a necessity, but the whole concept is so absurd.
@steveknows_420 Жыл бұрын
Hi alostkoi, I'm Steve and I'm a fratman from the Philippines. We have this writen rule that our kind of hazing shouldn't be degrading and deadly, instead it should just physically test our new brothers and how humble they are. I went through it, I never regretted joining my fraternity because some of the best people I've met are my fraternal brothers. Respect and solidarity are always required to be present whatever we're doing. I joined way back when I was in highschool, became a junior member, to avoid being bullied in school and also so I can easily protect my friends using the connection that I got from my fraternity. I get you, though. I'm aware that there are insane fraternities out there. Gangs exists and we just want to avoid being alone when we get into big fights or when we need more hands and minds to work with when working on serious projects. I got through college not being bullied by anyone, not even by crazy gang members. For me, the "tough guy" image is very handy but shouldn't be abused. The added confidence also helped me through a lot physical trainings as part of a football varsity team. I just gave myself another option when the going gets tough. I'm still an active member and I give advise to my local council.

That person would lose housing, connections, and potentially have their name tarnished by association. Absolutely horrible what happened, in this case, and Houses need better oversight if they're going to exist as organizations. A whole country has failed this hard working man. As a Belgian who just found your video I give even more context: TLDR: no changes yet, so Sanda shouldn't be forgotten! 1. Years before there was a voluntarily charter across frats and uni's that many fraternities signed. Flanders (northern part of Belgium) has many youth movements, so fraternities could be seen as a similar vibe when transitioning into adulthood. Hazing is 1 stage of becoming an active member with a ribbon and is normally a day with challenges: lightly suffering in group would create a bond for life. But it's not intented to be straight up bully/torture day. Students knew which frats tend to have psychopathic hazing and which ones are completely fine. Every frat has a designated member (that members voted for the past year) who has to check the ethics and safety of the hazing process and has to check the hazing students. In Reuzegom this mechanism clearly didn't work (utter stupidity from this person/the top of the frat as future doctor, engineer or lawyer?!) or was intentionally ignored (murder, guilty neglicence?!). Mind you that this hazing somehow started with excessive forced alcohol, delibirate denial of water, a witness from university staff on the parking lot who said Sanda needed to hydrate/go to hospital and then was sent to a weekend in a lodge in the woods for more 'challenges' (imo horror movie setting and straight psychopatic torture) instead of just 1 day in the uni city... 2. The main fraternities are based on your study field (like med students, bio engineers, maths & physics,...). Membership of such a frat is enough to get book and party discounts: hazing is completely optional. Smaller frats could be based on which region you came from. Or a specific interest like Moeder Theepot (translated as 'mother teapot': tea parties for every student and strictly against hazing). 3. Biggest universities are in Brussels, Ghent and Leuven. Belgium is rather small but densely populated in cities. Many students travel by public transport to university. Students who have to travel further or who have a budget can rent dorms in those cities. A small part are 'official' dorms catered by the uni's, many are rented by private persons or companies. Uni's can provide scholarship for renting dorms. The prices in Belgium are also an issue, but not related to Sanda's case. 4. Reuzegom was a small fraternity at KU Leuven: mainly nepotism boys originating from Antwerp (prestigious city but with less prestigious uni, hence they chose KU Leuven). Sanda's case sparked the debate about forcibly signing the charter or abandoning humiliating hazing by law and also whether racism in Flanders is still underestimated (and thus Sanda's logic to become a member of a networking frat). Since we have 7 governments and different uni's they concluded they couldn't lawfully forbid signing the charter or stop hazing. Court also couldn't prove that Reuzegom was inherently racist (indicating that every member was part of this dynamic and is guilty in some extent). The public eye found the hazing members guilty but can't know for sure whether membership also meant implicit racism. The documentary 'Pano' implied that the top members probably were guilty of (implicit) racism, based on (deleted) Whatsapp and Messenger messages and witnesses of their public activities. 5. The father and friends of Sanda tried to get media attention to put more pressure on the guys to give them closure about how Sanda died and to prevent another extreme hazing. This succeeded by a documentary program called 'Pano' (investigative journalism) of the Flemish broadcaster VRT. The documentary reconstructed the hazing process and showed the holes in the Reuzegom stories, also implying their (parents') extent to cover up their tracks. The lawyers probably advised to remain silent as giving closure could be seen as a confession, leading to (severe) punishment. 6. Court gave a lesser sentence than the public eye had expected. Many people blamed the nepotism and class justice, since one member (not related to this hazing) had a high ranking mother in the court region that investigated Sanda's death at first. The trials got delayed as much as possible by the lawyers, which is legal but only frustrates the victim's family, friends and the public eye. As reaction KZbinr Acid doxed many members of Reuzegom. He faced a lawsuit (where he chose to not have a lawyer) and punishment for also doxing members who weren't involved in the hazing which led to boycotting of the families of members. Though court faced critisicm again for giving Acid a sentence that gave more official fellonies and punishment than some of the Reuzegom members. 7. Some musicians gave a speech during their performances at festivals to support the idea that Sanda's case was class justice. There were many protests to show support and demanding change. 8. A few months before Sanda's docu the same investigative journalism team of 'Pano' had shown a student/political movement with extreme right/ neo nazi Flemish propaganda called 'Schild en vrienden'. Their leader Dries Van Langenhove had become part of the student counsil of UGent (university of Ghent), while many students hadn't known their extreme visions behind their normal looking student council goals. Their strategy was to infiltrate institutions and political parties and then to pressure their agenda. The leader got banned from university buildings but became part of the extreme right political party 'Vlaams belang', which had become eerily more popular despite also being racist. Several members of another Flemish nationalist party 'NVA' got kicked out when their membership of 'Schild en vrienden' became public. This documentary was fuel for the unease and further debates when Sanda's documentary aired: both Ghent and Leuven suffered from (implicit) racism and weak uni policy?! 9. Nowadays the father wishes to be able to mourn his son privately (instead of politics or media using the case for their own propaganda like distrust in court system and taking matters in own hands, conspiracy,...) 10. There still haven't been acceptable political changes or university policy changes, so Sanda shouldn't be forgotten, hence my lengthy comment. Many people think our governmental laws wait too long instead of preventing another disaster. 'Als het kalf verdronken is, dempt men de put' = 'When the calf has drowned, they muffle the pit.'

I had "hazing" in France, "journée d'intégration", using the word bizutage is "banned" (as it would help...). Discussing this with friends, from uni (most majors stopped hazing), med school, engineer school, classe prépa... I think they really toned down for more than a decade now... I had a journée d'intégration 10y ago at university. No one was obligated to participate, it was stated multiple times before and during, some didn't wanted to do some tasks, and it was ok to everyone. Clearly they had a lot of imagination for the task to not endanger us. No alcohol at all. They were veeeeerry strict on rules, maybe the university warned them? University hazing is suuuuper rare now. Only a few do it (med, law maybe, engineer). (I'm not talking about the army, firefighter and all because it's another level...) You have the faluchards that still has a big tradition of alcool, gross things etc. But I think it's really dying down. They are the only "strong hazing" group I know of in France. I think it's a French law that banned bizutage that helped France to get it to minimum risks. But as tradition is very strong in Belgium, I don't know if it would die down.

Alcohol is banned, and the pledges allergies and disabilities are taken into account. They've even hazed a guy in a wheelchair (he got no legs). It's also completely consensual, you're allowed to quit whenever you want and tell the people doing the hazing when you're feeling sick so they can set you aside for a bit. I'm Belgian and like many others in the country, I followed this case closely. You covered this really well, but only one correction though, the youtuber Acid is not the one who brought attention to this case. The day after Sanda died, news articles started coming out. Because everyone knows the university, it was HUGE news all over Belgium. One media site even posted a full timeline of the hazing, people were disgusted. Everyone was waiting patiently for the court case, only to be severly disappointed at their sentencing. The Reuzengommers all being part of big, wealthy, influential families was a big topic of conversation too. Everyone was outraged. Only after their sentencing, Acid released some of the names of the frat members. It was news, but he was not the reason for this case gaining so much attention in Belgium (idk about international). The protests happened because of the light sentencing. The whole country has been heavily following this since 2018, Acid is irrelevant to most Belgians.

A fraternity at my school verablly assaulted and removed a trans girl from one of their dumb little parties, then erected a large banner outside that said "No tr*nnies allowed", (or something like that but the slur was definitely involved.) The only reason it got any local media coverage was because we held protests, rallies, chalked up the campus, etc for WEEKS. (We were also just fed up cause it happened closely after the school had subtly tried to change the housing policies to be more hostile to us, and that kind of thing almost always emboldens these shit heads.)
