I hope that when the cowards that left the kids to die finally die themselves that in their afterlife they are made to drown in cold water again and again like the children that they left to die. That would be justice.

Attention: Coast Guards of The World and Concerned Leaders: I computed 30 helicopters supported coordinated with 1 life boat each (buddies), with each saving 10 pax, easily saves 300 people. Do this 2 times say 30 minutes per travel, will save 600 people, in 60 minutes. I believe the emergency was detected at 830AM. Vessel sank 11AM. Available time of 120-150 Minutes. Time is of the essence and an organised rescue technique tactic strategy is a standard for rescue operations especially for marine SOS. It is so horrifying and devastating how the lack of concern and competence killed many lives just like that. I am not even from Marine or Navy, at all. Just an ordinary concerned citizen. I believe every passenger from now on should have access to calling the Marine, Navy, AirForce and Coast Guard Hotlines.

What's even worse is that there were US and Japanese vessels nearby. Upon hearing over the radio the ferry capsized, they raced to the scene to offer help. The local government not only refused to accept aid but ordered the vessels to leave and mind their own business. Those kids could of been saved if one or both vessels said 'screw it' and forced their way in to help. Political fallout can be dealt with later but at least those kids would of been saved and able to go home alive.

Important info for all people still watching - if you are ever in a sinking ship - NEVER put you life jacket on inside the ship - ALWAYS put it on when you are fully outside. In many ship sinking cases people died because they put their life jackets on while still inside. A life jacket will always push you up and if the water level gets to high you will not be able to get out of the ship because you will be unable to go under water and f.ex. swim outside the ship. Secondly ships tend to have narrow corridords, windows and doors - you will not be able to go out in a life jacket. This is a type of a tip that can literally save your life - ALWAYS PUT YOUR LIFE JACKET ONLY WHEN YOU ARE OUTSIDE THE SHIP

It's the same for airplanes as well. During a ditching (landing on water), it is imperative that you *don't inflate* your lifejacket until *outside* of the plane, or there is a possibility that you could get trapped inside the cabin.

Very good to know. The captain musnt have known this. I know some situations wont survive impact during certain situations however only good reason to not wait to inflate would be so perhaps ur body can be retrieved or atleast thats what i would think. I think this because certain impacts force alone would kill, or frigid waters too and if no chance of survival atleast ur loved ones would have a body to bury. Thoughts?

The kids that managed to survive were the ones that didn’t listen and refused to just stay in their rooms and die. They went against the captains orders and went up to the top of the boat where they got rescued by civilian boats. The other kids that stayed all unfortunately died because they were failed by the adults they had been taught to trust and save them. That’s why it’s important to teach children to think for themselves, it can be life or death. May they rest in peace.

The thing that frustrates me here is that in a normal rescue that follows proper protocol, it is actually best to stay in the room you’re expected to be in. Because it can impede staff and rescue efforts to have a throng of people on deck and following proper evacuation procedures, when conducted, is the best policy. But when those procedures aren’t followed, your stateroom is the most dangerous place to be, as we see here. Edited for clarity.

I think smth similar happened with Japan Airlines Flight 123. They crashed into a mountain, the US had military helicopters and rescuers hovering on site ready to help, but the government was like "nah we got this bro" and the Japanese thought "yo ain't no way anybody survived that" so they launched the rescue next morning instead. 500+ people died, but there were 4 survivors. The locals and survivors said they heard voices at the crash site all night, but in the hours that followed, they slowly disappeared... National pride is such a stupid excuse to deny foreign aid. 😢

I watched all of the news as it was happening 10 years ago - watched the videos as it streamed, watched at messages and info about phone calls to families flooded the internet. He was the first to call the authorities, but I didn't know until this video that he remained on the communications with the authorities. Then, in the months after the tragedy, the news was about "coast guards etc were tipped off about a raid and deleted files" that were related to the Sewol ferry was all over the internet. I honestly had not realized until today - if Choi's call was so long, where is the transcript of it? If it was so long, it must have been on those deleted files. And how vile and disrespectful must that person or those persons be to wipe evidence of a boy's desperate call for help when he and his friends futilely and publicly died waiting for it. The people who deleted evidence and videos from the coast guard or marines, or whatever offices they did it from have to be ashamed of themselves, and no punishment is enough for their part in covering this tragedy.

What sad was, when that one tiny submarine full of 5 or so millionares got lost, a lot of people took action even if it was a dumb idea in the first place. But when this ship full of children was at risk, no one took responsibility, no one double-checked or triple checked on them. Captains were supposed to sink with their boat but that captain(if you can even call him that) is a coward. And the way they also gave those parents hope are just disgusting, my mom would always be paranoid if I will be home late and when we don't answer her calls, just imagine what those parents were filling during those times where their children can't answer their phone.

As a seafarer, it blows my mind how 99%-100% of lives that could've been saved were not saved because of the incompetence of the crews especially the ship's captain. The chief mate and captain didn't even did an inspection regarding the ship's stability prior to departure. For context, I worked for a cargo ship before, and before we depart from the port, we make sure that the ship is stable, if not, we fill the ballast tanks with water depending on how much the ship is tilted. We make sure all cargoes are tied up and stable as well. This is very a heart wrenching story to hear. The fact that they made an announcement that killed all those students, I can't even imagine how horrifying was it for those children that didn't evacuate because of that announcement..

i remember this, a friend of mine's cousin was in the navy and at the time he was on that certain vessel. most of the workers were ready to help, like she said in the video, THEY ARE TRAINED FOR THESE THINGS! I remember him saying he felt devastated when the news came to him in the end. He felt upset about everything and so did the people who were around him. this is upsetting really because the marines would've definitely DEFINITELY saved everyone on that boat. I wish the marines would ignore their word and went in to help them.

The way the situation was mishandled, the delayed response, and the selfish captain compounded this heartbreaking tragedy. Those ruthless and heartless hinds were the reason of people’s sorrow and grief. Yet, we cannot ignore the courageous and selfless 16y.o students who were sacrificing their life jackets just to ensure their classmates’ and teachers’ safety; this act reflects the solidarity arising at times like these. They were the brave compassionate ones instead of the adults whom they’ve trusted to guarantee their safety

The government knew if the navy got involved there would be an extensive military investigation, that's the norm for anything where the military is involved, whereas if it was denied the government could hide it behind an incompetent internal investigation. The reason simply that investigations into the ferry company would reveal extensive corruption that went all the way up to that b-tch President daughter of a dictator Park Geun Hye.

As an American, I remember this story. There was a small outage about this(here). No where near enough but a noticeable amount. People (in America) were angry at our government for not finding a way to intervene. The ship was RIGHT THERE and the Navy ship just watched. Though reports from the Navy said the soldiers were begging to do something. The higher ups said their hands were tied because intervening could start a war. It just didn't feel like enough.

Can you imagine a child who had an older sibling or cousin who'd previously taken this trip? And told them how much fun they'd had and what an experience it'd been. The anticipation and excitement of a 15 or 16 year old young person yearning for excitement and experience and a little freedom from home and schoolwork and their parents. Probably from the older sibling who'd maybe teased or talked up the trip. For some of the kids it was probably one of the most exciting deals they'd had to that point. How terribly, terribly sad. Especially because those people weren't trained to do this. While the firefighters who were lost on 9/11 obviously didn't deserve to die, or be traumatized for those who survived, there is an expectation with the job that you will risk your life. They knew that. But these teachers and students were just going on a trip. The crew who didn't flee were just doing a routine job on a cargo ship. They shouldn't have even had to consider the idea of dying, and yet they gave so many more sacrifices because nobody got it together to save them, and they had to give their lives to save just the few peers who managed to escape.

I think he might have been the first largish English speaking channel to cover it and he's the first engineering focused channel I know who did. He mispronounces almost every name if Stephanie's pronunciation is accurate but he did two feature length documentaries (part one: the tragedy, part two: the cover up) covering the story, the shipping mistakes, the rescue mistakes, and how much everything about it angers him and should anger us. It's a very different style from this but very well done.

I hope their justice in whatever comes after this life is an eternity of suffering to make up for the lives they stole and ruined and lost.

The Korean disaster is similar to the Japanese crash of Flight 123 about 40 years ago. What makes a big difference, however, is that the pilot did his best to die, but the captain of the disaster killed 300 students and ran away alone.

i remember when i first heard about this on the day i was like omg that’s crazy and so sad and i was confused how every student died and then i researched more about the case later and was so pissed at all the “rescue teams” that went and basically just did a photo shoot for the news and big people that were there instead of trying to help the students

I thought the same thing. I didn't fully understand why everything unfolded the way it did and why it was such a tragedy. Most of the things I read pretty much summarized that no one could really get out there. There were so many things that went wrong and so many things that could have been done. It's so sad.
