To kidnap and torture and innocent teenager with the intent to kill is far worse than someone that shoots someone and ends their life quickly. This was the horrific torture of an individual who did nothing to initiate the whole situation.

This comment really touched me. I was not abused nearly to the point she was, but when Steph was describing this part, I understood immediately, like almost having a flashback to this intense feeling of “you will not break me”. It’s weird because those moments were the strongest I’ve ever felt in my life, but they’re juxtaposed by the external reality of the situation. I’ve never thought about it as beautiful, but I can kind of see it through your comment. It was also at that point where I just knew she would be okay. Yes, there’s going to be a long recovery for her, but once you feel that fire within you, it’s forever. You will refuse to be broken by the person who hurt you, even when that damage lasts

@@Milkman0101as a child abuse survivor I feel this in my bones, my mother and brother would use gaslighting, manipulation, neglect, and sometimes for fun a lot of violence, even during those moments where my brother beat me, smashed my head into walls and strangled me, I NEVER begged and refused to break. He was sadistic and wanted me to beg, but I refused to beg, refused to cry, refused to submit. I escaped at 18, have never looked back (am 33). I have permanent nerve damage to my lower abdominal wall (lower stomach/pelvis from repeated kicking) and cPTSD, I shouldn’t have those kind of battle scars but I do, they’re part of me. It’s helped me in some weird way when dealing with wannabe bullies in life, through college, university and work (before my nerve damage got too much, mostly housebound/bedridden disabled but that’s okay) because bullies want you to submit and cower in fear… but the way I grew up I just straight up didn’t fear these wannabe Mean Girls, I’d stare them down and challenge them, if they want to be bullies then they need to _try_ and break me and that won’t be happening, this happened moreso in college/uni (I dunno what it is about educational spaces and bullies but good LORD), and some kitchens I worked in with chefs unhappy in life trying to take it out on their staff. Those intense moments going through actual hell where you’re barely holding onto consciousness? The one thought that always ran through my brain was “he will not break me, I refuse”. I hope Chamilla is able to heal and knows just how strong she truly is, that she has a fighters spirit, that she’s a warrior, and even if the scars last a long time or maybe forever, she can’t be broken, she’s incredibly strong and brave. I hope she holds onto that feeling because it’s an incredible feeling to hold onto when going through your darkest day. Like battling cPTSD isn’t fun but I combat it with “but I’ll never be broken, this trauma sucks and I have to live alongside the trauma, but I’ll never have my spirit broken”, it’s hard to explain just how much that feeling really helps.

@@dimesuga2042The right to a fair trial is enshrined in our Constitution, which includes having an attorney make your best defense. I think that's why China's crime rate is so much lower than the US. The US justice system in a walk in the park compared to China. We let rapists roam free or give them a slap on the wrist. If they do go to jail for a few minutes, we have some of the nicest prisons in the world. 3 meals a day, TV, a gym, libraries, visitors, ect all on the US taxpayers dime. Commissary is for extra little treats here. Without it you can still survive just fine. If I committed a crime in China (which I wouldn't, because I know they don't fuck around) I'd be hauling ass back to the US. Much rather take my chances here.0

Had a girl like Helen in school. She didn't know who I was and came up to me cause I was talking to her boyfriend in PE and slapped me in the face. Said a lot of mean stuff and embarassed me in front of students. Most of them stayed quiet but some didn't laugh. She didn't know my dad was a teacher in high school. I went to the principals office which was my dads friend and put on the water works. She ended up suspended and my dad told her she better not be one of her student in highschool cause she'll get it coming. She was so shocked. I saw her a few times and smiled at her. She attended the high school and stayed quiet. Stopped her bullying cause if she got kicked out of school she would have to go to the high school all they way to the other town. Don't be afraid to stand up to bullies. If they're manipulative be more manipulative than them. They will never stop, if they know you'll stay silent you'll just be a target. I think Camellia is very brave and I'm glad she spoke out. I hope she's doing alright. I feel weird using the word "lucky," but she really is lucky to be alive. These monsters should be in prison for the rest of their lives. They tried to kill her, that's what they wanted to do. I don't really see a difference between attempted murder and murder...The intention was the same. And trying to light someone on fire? My God! That has to be one of the most brutal ways to kill a person. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. I was a teenage girl, I went through petty beef and was bullied, but I never wanted to physically harm anyone. There is something seriously wrong with these people. I know "The Hangover" is a comedy, but there's a line from it that I think about a lot in situations like this. When Stu is breaking up with his fiancee he says, "You're just a bad person. THIS CASE IS FROM MY HOMETOWN!! Not a lot goes on there, but this incident started sooo much discord between the locals and the immigrant population and it was so awful to see and experience. I remember for a while, a lot of the newer, less established international students could never make any friends because the other students were afraid. I can’t believe you’re covering this case, but it’s amazing to always see you spreading awareness on the effects of bullying and what can happen when teens/children don’t have correct guidance in their early years.

I’ve heard a lot of foreigners say that they don’t want to visit or send their college age kids to the United States because of how dangerous it is here. Especially the unchecked gun violence that the majority of other countries don’t have. It’s shocking to think that those spoiled exchange students were bullying one of their own, but given their cultural norms they never thought she would turn them in. I’m so proud that Camilla reported the incident to the police. This story is so sad and I’m sure has caused lifelong trauma to Camilla. The only benefit that has come from it is the three older ones were sent to prison & then deported back to China. Having said that, I wouldn’t be surprised if their parents were able to have their names and identities changed so that they could go on to have normal and successful lives after returning to China. I’m not religious but I pray that Camilla can get past the psychological and physical abuse and live a happy life. She didn’t deserve what happened to her and hopefully going forward the families that foreign students are placed with have more of a parental/guardian role in their lives.

I think, if you take her physical injuries and general appearance into account, there probably wasn't much she could have done to NOT report this. It would have come out eventually anyway. There is no way she could have made up a story around it that the police and other parties would have believed. Good on her for not trying to hide anything in the first place. It probably would have made things a lot harder for the prosecution and would have felt like another victory forr the bullies if she had been too scared to speak up about it. And it probably took quite a bit of courage to do so. So kudos to her for doing it anyway.

From my experience as a Chinese-American who often gets asked to host international students, kids who get sent to the US under random host families tend to have irresponsible parents who don't want to parent. Responsible parents try to have one of them come with or send the kid to a relative. If they can't do that, they try to get in touch with an acquaintance like me with a good education and plenty of time to watch over their child instead of strangers, and they ask for A LOT. A school with these conditions would only be acceptable if the parents are uncaring or gullible. The parents and administrators in this story failed the children on so many fronts.

Helen is a psychopath, usually anyone arrested and going to trial will look somber and repentant, at the very least look like they are taking this seriously. Her smirks, glares, interrupting the victims statement, and laughter to her boyfriend prove she wasn’t the least bit sorry. Camilla obviously had suffered greatly at their hands for who knows how long in school. My heart breaks for her and knowing several got off by fleeing the country is disgusting. I can only hope they are known online and that Chinese citizens give them a taste of bullying back as justice. Prayers to Camilla and her family, I can’t imagine their pain and anguish of sending their daughter to a foreign country, believing that she would be cared for and protected and for such evil things to be done to her, the weight of those wounds must be a heavy burden.

I didn’t think anyone would see my comment so didn’t clarify earlier sorry 🙏🏻 they even made makeshift musical instruments and composed songs and music while castaway. This was in 1965 and they were on the island for 15 months. They’d discovered the ruins of a village near an old volcano with feral chickens and things, and used these to help them survive :) if one got too upset he’d go away for quiet time then come back when he felt better, which helped keep the peace in their little society 💚

Back in the 1980's there was a really horrific crime in Australia, committed by homeless kids. All but one were under 16. What they did was absolutely disgusting, and an innocent young woman died. There were 5 perpetrators, one was a girl. Of the five, one got of scott-free. ( The girl). One boy got 8 years. He got out , and has committed horrific s** crimes, over and over again. The other three got life. Their files were marked "Never to be released". The youngest of these three was 14. He is now almost 50. He will never get out, well, except in a body bag. This was his punishment for a 3hr time period in his life. He's just got on with dealing with the consequences of those 3 hours. What I'm saying is, it doesn't matter how long the crime took out of the accused persons life. The victim is ALL that matters. Hellen and co will get out of prison eventually, and go on their merry way. But for Camellia, those hours will remain with her - every time she gets undressed. And that's all that matters.

It happened in 2003 at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, IL. during the annual junior vs. senior class girls powderpuff football game. The senior girls brutally beat the junior girls, they also threw buckets of paint, pig intestines, fish guts, blood, plus animal and human excrement on them!! They boldly filmed the entire incident, you can find the footage of online, it’s horrific! 15 students were charged with misdemeanor battery, imo they should’ve been punished MUCH more harshly especially considering the level of depravity they displayed during the attack! Smh, the fact that girls can be this cruel to one another makes me sick!

The "never learn English" part is so real, I was born in Canada so I grew up speaking English, both at school and at home, but a lot of my Chinese/Korean friends who came here at different points in their lives (ranges from kindergarten, elementary school, middle, or high school), they would never speak English to each other and only speak broken English at school (or not even speak at all and ask me after the teacher gives instructions because they don't understand) so I usually try to talk to them in English only so they could improve their speaking, they never try to learn English on their own :/

It kind of blows my mind that people willingly go to another country but don't learn the language. Do they not realize how much of a handicap that is? Do they not realize how much more difficult it makes it to function in everyday life and make your way through society? Do they not realize how much more alienated you'll be when you can't form basic relations with neighbors, community, peers? Do they not understand how much opportunities for work and projects and all sorts of experiences are taken away? I'm someone who's parents neglected to teach me my own native language of my own country and I have immense resentment over it and have experienced how much it's set me back in my life. I genuinely cannot imagine why someone would go through that by their *own* will.
