​@@RayDayPlays Don't underestimate the power of curiosity. It's a big blend of things, she had to be a certain type of person to get carried away or to consent to such act in the first place. But the curiosity probably was a big motivating factor. I have been pushed to do things I on a certain level did not want to do due to curiosity. Now, to reiterate, to get carried away in this sense or to want to do or especially to actually do something so terrible required a certain type of person.

Not exactly, I don't think? Depression is definitely a factor, but to say that it's just depression sort of ignores many of the unique aspects of being a hikikomori. It also suggests that depression is a catch-all, when it can manifest in different forms. I think that with being a hikikomori, there are many motivations and experiences. For some, being a hikikomori is a release, and others, an indulgence. There are some that feel happy not interacting with society, and others that feel happier to have others take care of them. For others it can be from crippling fear, while for others, it's a result or side-effect of having one obsession or another. It has many elements, and I think that differentiating it from the blanket diagnosis of depression allows society, and those responsible or invested in addressing this issue to tackle it more directly. That said, that is my own opinion, and I don't intend to invalidate your opinion by any means!

I work for the National Suicide and Crisis Prevention Lifeline and I take chat/text conversations. We get SOOOO many young people who are reclusive and do not socialize with anyone to the point where they can’t even call the life line and instead come to chat/text so they don’t have to vocally talk to another person. It’s a huge epidemic in the US as well and the ages are getting lower and lower. The youngest person I have spoken to like this was 9.

I lived with a girl that behaved just like this, I went out of my way to ask her how she was doing every day because I felt bad... Once I moved out, she stalked me for a whole year afterwards, and went out of her way to tell whoever we knew in common (literally 3 people) how much she hated me, coming up with crazy stories anytime she could get them to pay attention. The stalking kept getting more vicious and obsessive, so I moved towns. It seems outlandish, but these people are literally everywhere, they have no interest in fellow human beings, until they perceive someone to have something they do not, then they pounce. Mind you, this girl was a complete stranger, just a roomate, we never had a conversation outside of "How are you today?"

Probably the biggest reason that I watch true crime is to learn on what to do and what not to do and what to look for to protect myself etc. I can't even hold a weapon and threaten someone with it let alone murder them. The planning and the effort to do all of that is just sickening.

My friend was also getting like this because she was a huge murder related crime fan. At 1st, she used to tell me the stories and at last she would add “I feel bad for the ones who are murdered” which was normal and I felt the same way! Now after a few months, when she told me the stories she was like “curious” to now about how it feels to murder. I thought it was normal until she was talking about it non stop! She was always into these, she was always looking at the knifes and forks or other stuffs like blades, razors and more. She would stare at them and smile. But when I asked her what was wrong, she would always deny something being wrong about her. She acted like she was normal! But I guess, she was not… Gladly I did notice all of it after 3 months passed and knew something was wrong. So I told her parents, our tutors and the people she is close with.her family got her into a good treatment and her friends including me helped her to get out of that phrase. She’s still my friend and she’s totally perfect and fine now! I’m glad she’s okay now.

I think you should say ‘the victim’ if you’re talking about the person, but ‘the body’ if you’re literally talking about the dead body. The person is not in there anymore and it’s creepy to me to not make a clear distinction between a live person (has thoughts and feelings and potential) and a dead body (literally just some dead organic matter). I also get creeped out when people use any pronoun but “it” to refer to a dead body. It seems disrespectful to the person the body used to belong to, and also just creepy in general to blur those lines.

Good luck with everything you're already so amazing for taking that first step. I struggle with social anxiety and agoraphobia so I know how hard it is to actually take that step and leave. I still have to force myself to leave my house at least twice a week because I know if I don't do that I will get stuck in my house again. The only reason I took that step was because I didn't have a choice. I had a health emergency and I had to have life saving surgery. I probably still wouldn't have been able to leave if it hadn't been for my guy really make me realize I wasn't just hurting myself but my family. How can it is we’ll describe when there is no actual written study about it. So there is no constant explanation for it. Basically is it by choice? Or is it u are push to behave that way?

​@@jasminericeeto get diagnosed as a hikikomori, you have to have no other physical or mental problems. it's part of the diagnosis. if you have something else (anxiety, depression, blindness, mobility issues, etc.) that is your diagnosis instead of hikikomori. some researchers & psychiatrists do make a distinction between "primary hikikomori" & "secondary hikikomori" - the primary being you have nothing but hikikomori & the secondary being you had an undiagnosed issue (usually autism, HPDD or lower mental congnitive functions) that was a catalyst for you to become a hikikomori (as in, the stresses of daily life were overwhelming, so a more active choice was made to become a hikikomori as it seemed more appealing)... but with "secondary hikikomori", once people get a correct diagnosis & a treatment plan it has been observed to be easier to re-integrate them back into the folds of society & their enjoyment of life rapidly improves, whereas "primary hikikomori" folks really struggle &/or have no interest to be part of society. it's also common that psychiatrists will classify "secondary hikikomori" people as "reclusive" instead, i guess the nuance between those two is an important distinction for some professionals. hikikomori is still relatively new though, so i imagine with time & more research more will be understood about it & could very well be an undiagnosed issue that is not yet even known to exist.

I had a very good friend who I stayed with for a visit. We've known each other for a very long time. We would always sleep in the same bed & talk for hours. She is a true crime fan. Back then I was more into music. One night she would tell me all about these crazy cases of serial killers. When we were getting more tired & the lights were off, I was drifting away & all of the sudden she says: "I would really like to know how it is to kill someone" I didn't know how to answer & until today I'm spooked.

I graduated in 2018 and told myself I would take a year break..well it's 2023 and I barely left my house. I would only go outside if my parents accompanied me but the few times I do go walk on my own anxiety eats me up making me go back home asap. Of course documentaries, video games, etc., don't cause people to commit murder or be violent. But people who *already* having violent thoughts and tendencies can be inspired by stories of "successful" killers.

i once heard someone explain true crime obsessions as a "controlled chaos". its where your so used to having a "messy" life/childhood, and by hearing about stuff happening, you feel close to your childhood. Where "controlled" comes in, is that every time you feel/get overwelmed or something, you can just turn it off.

But more so *controlled chaos : It being someone else's chaos that you can turn off or on at anytime and be happy it isn't you this time. I agree. Whats scary is the number of people in the comments who are insinuating and liking comments that the killer's curiosity was somehow perfectly normal. In more than 2 decades of watching true crime on and off, i've never once been curious about what it would feel like to off someone and I'm pretty unsentimental. Makes you realize the kind of sickos that are watching the same videos we are watching. I'm extremely curious about the world and how things work but taking a life is something only a psycho would be curious about.

Yes, he didnt ask for this at all, no one would even think about being in such situation, but to cry for him is a bit much. He's a grown up adult, and a responsible one.. any normal person would do the same thing if they can sense any suspicious activity happening like this one. The only reason I got out of it was because I had to move into shared housing for college and had to function normally. When I watch true crime, my mind always go to how the victim feels in those moments, and how awful I feel for them. I never thought there were people out there who think about what the killer feels, and puts themselves in their shoes. The thought of getting into the killer's shoes mentally is terrifying and disgusting to me.

I agree, just not the way you phrased it. There’s nothing wrong with putting yourself in the killers shoes. What do you think the field of forensic psychology and criminal justice is all about? They do exactly that. How do I know? I’m studying to become just that. If we want to solve a crime (profiling, etc.) diagnose a criminal with a potential mental illness and give them the help they need, we HAVE to think from their perspective and get inside their head. Sometimes we even sympathize with them. Does that make me a murderer or a psychopath? I don’t think so.

My only social interaction is at my two jobs and at home/my partner. I interact with my coworkers just fine, i’ve known them for so long, its normal. Now i got a word to discribe my current state, I'm like halfway into this hikikomori state. Its been 5 years since i locked myself into my home, rarely go outside(losing my mom affected me a lot). Many people have tried and adviced me to come out of my state but whenever I try my physical health affects badly and I go back into my shell. I do believe that this girl has a problem where she is bored with literally everything in life. It could be a schizotypical disorder (which Dahmer had) or a psychopathy problem. Of course, she may envy to be Hannah, but she is also extremely unmotivated and does not have any long-term thinking abilities. The way she says "I want to kill to see how it felt" - my theory is - because she felt excited. Killing someone was so big it finally broke something in her that made her feel something, because people greeting and making friends was way too understimulating for whatever problem she had. When nothing is stimulating in life you chase what is stimulating. These types of people have very pet hobbies that make them feel thrilled and excited because otherwise they feel absolutely nothing (just like her favorite spot in the park or movie). And for this psychopath, this killing thing clicked for her.

Let's just say it was really really bad Can tell yeah I'm just grateful me and son got out when did . Guess could go little more and state he probably would of killed us if he had more time like he killed our cat ( last time saw that cat he was literally smelling of death, blood everywhere and his jaw was hanging from his face, bastard said cat probably got hit by a car though the car never went outside and he killed cats before or a rumor of him doing so ) he once through me up against kitchen wall and said he wasn't done with me yet and I did nothing to cause his outburst all was doing was the dishes and I learned after left from a psychiatrist that he throw my autistic son with other special needs into our refrigerator till my child saw twetty bird. Listening to you story tell is like getting together with a good friend and listening to their passions/newest hyper fixation and it is what keeps me coming back to your channel over all other true crime channels Also I think it is imperative you keep sharing stories from Asia because so many channels are focused on the US and UK it is too repetitive. This freaked me the hell out and had me questioning myself because when you were describing her school life, I kind of related. I’ve always been an introvert, i flew so under the radar at school I didn’t even get bullied, i don’t do well at interviews/first impressions at all, and I burnt out HARD after high school and haven’t been to college, or even applied anywhere when I was in my final year because I just couldn’t do it anymore (gifted kid burnout syndrome af). I grew up with my mom telling me she feels like she’s living with a stranger in her house because I’m very reclusive, and really do prefer to just stay in my room, but that’s because I’m just very introverted and need time to recharge after too much social interaction, like school, or work, and arguing with my mom. I’ve been doing a lot of introspection lately and slowly working through it all but I couldn’t help but cringe at the thought that if you described this girl to my mom, she would without hesitation say I’m just like her. Now I’ve never wondered what it was like to kill someone’s, I don’t even like being evil in video games! But it’s creepy just how similar our lives seem to parallel, even if only superficially, and I can’t help but wonder if other people would think I’m capable of this, and that really fucking scares me

I can relate, I’m not even able to kill the monsters in Minecraft. I literally freak out when they start attacking me and always end up dead bc I was unable to escape. At this point (after hearing all these murder horror stories) I would literally find it hard to trust anyone damn

I can kind of relate to that. Especially the gifted kid burns out syndrome thing (though mine was connected to being autistic). I think we should try to remember that as you said this is a VERY superficial view of this girl and we don’t know how she actually is or was perceived. I do think we all share certain similarities with each other unfortunately, that doesn’t mean we all kill people though…I hope you don’t feel too upset by the perceived similarities you share with this girl because I’m certain just having that worry is enough to ensure you’re not like her.

I mean you really can’t label him a good/bad person based on one interview. You don’t know him. Also I think it’s a harmful mindset to say people are just born wrong. That is almost never the case. A lot of people with antisocial behavior are victims of abuse. And to write people off as just being “innately evil” or whatever makes it so we can ignore issues of mental health thinking that there’s no way to help people like this. More than likely this woman was a victim of abuse. The fact that her parents tossed her off to her grandparent screams neglect to me. Even if she just was born with antisocial behaviors with no abuse, this does not mean that people can’t be helped with therapy. In South Korea especially discussion of mental health is taboo and ignored. Not going to lie, if she had the proper support and access to therapy, this might have been prevented. :/

the way her social life felt very similar to the experience of those with autism (including myself) is scary in a lot of ways. i hope people don’t start misconstruing everyone that might have some social anxiety/issues as a potential psychopath

Agreed. It's also important to note that psychopathy is not synonymous to murderer or a bad person. Sure it can make someone more susceptible due to the lack of empathy etc. But psychopaths can also be "regular" good people and even hold heroic professions which protect others.

To be honest my mom sent me this and said, "I'm afraid you'll end up the same" It honestly made me upset because I don't even like crime novels lol, she doesn't even know what I watch/ read yet she judges me for it just for being on the Autistic side. I saw some doc specifically on Hikikomoro and was just in shock because I thought I was the only one that felt like that. I always thought it was depression that’s just progressively gotten worse as I’ve gotten older(just turned 41). Idk if what affects me is this, but I can totally understand how it can happen and it’s very easy. Edit: Also I should mention that the doc did talk about how people would go in and try and be a friend to the son(most of those that were Hikikomoro were young boys)to try and pull them out of the depression and get them to socialize again. Though the boys were obsessed with video games, they weren’t just laying in bed all day.

I’ve never heard of the term hikikomori but I can relate. After highschool It’s like all progression stopped for me. I didn’t leave my room, didn’t socialize, go out, look into getting a job, or looked into any other options. I just stopped existing. Luckily I had a close friend. Basically family at this point. After a year of this, she had enough and dragged my ass back into living. Now I have a job, I’m in more contact with friends, and hang out with my family. It was pretty scary. It felt like I was in some timeless bubble, and outside of it time speed by Might join a gym. Just to have something to do on my days off. Being kept active has improve my state.

Totally, she didn't kill because of True Crime, she was into TC due to her violent/psychopatic tendencies, like other serial killers/murderers were interested in other killers, violent books/movies or hobbies like hunting or torturing animals before their first kill. Anyways, thanks to the taxi driver she was stopped before she commited another crime. I hope he can restore his life and that these apps stop working like this, they are clearly too dangerous. Poor Hana 😞

49:40 This is painfully true. Whenever women are SA’d or people are unalived in crimes and such, people always look for a “why” and will come up with the vilest things to make themselves feel safer. Someone SA’d that woman? Why was she alone? Why didn’t she protect herself better? Why did she go down that road? Why was she wearing that? She’s obviously asking for it. Why was that person unalive’d?, Where were they? How do their friends describe them? Were they somewhere outside after dark? Were they close to a drxg point? They obviously deserve it. A cop shot that person who wasn’t a criminal? Well, why were they resisting? Did they move way too fast and scare the cop? Why not comply to everything no matter how horrible just so they’d survive? Why did the cop find them shady? They’re obviously at fault and not the cop. It’s disgusting and thankfully we’re slowly coming out of the age of “blame the victim”, but it’s still way too high for comfort. I hate that someone can have something horrible happen to them and strangers will jump to conclusions as to why it happened just so they can feel safer inside their own lives.

True crime victims are not the only representation that you can get 💗💗 There’s so many inspiring people who have the same traumatic experiences as you, and it worries me if you only know people in tragic situations to be relatable, because it could reinforce negative feelings about yourself. Without knowing the term I was most likely Hikkikomori (as a girl). All you described I can agree to. You Start feeling so overwhelmed by all the challenges in your young life (and the fact that sometimes you simply do not get hired even with excellent grades) that you get afraid of even trying. In those days its comfy to stay at home and Don t get judged.. until its too late to go outside again. Everytime I went outside I felt like an weird animal everyone is staring at (they didnt😅) and I got so afraid of even thinking about going outside that after 3-4 years in solitude/hikkikomori Lifestyle my parents saved me by bringing me to Do therapy.
