Other names of the "Elephant Toenail" include: "Sunfish" "Pocket Axe" "British Rope Knife" "Emergency Spatula" What you have in the video is a sleeve board Sunfish. Toenails are the small (3 inch to 3 1/4 inch closed) version. Sunfish can be an equal end, sleeve board, or swell center.

Funny, I bought a Frost Toenail (not a Sunfish like yours} at a hard sale a couple of years back, new. It opens and closes normally, nothing like the one you purchased. It also takes a nice edge. I suppose if I were to EDC a folder like this, I might opt for superior materials, but the one I own lives in my car's glove box and I get nice use out of it. I like the unusual shape!

That's a nice Elephant's Toenail :-) I have a few of these but with different scales and I love them. It's definitely bone though...I have several bone handled Rough Riders and that material is identical. graet video brother :-)

The Rough Riders have always been decent but recently, they have become amazing for the price. They now have an almost cult following.

That looks like bone to me. There is/was(?) another elephant toenail made with the yellow composite handles, but I don't think that's it. The black specks in your handle are an indication that it's bone and not plastic. The plastic would be a solid light-ish yellow color, based on what I've seen/read about those. I only have two RR knives so far, both with bone handles, and I can see similar imperfections/variations in the material. There's a picture here of what the yellow composite version looks like: www.wildbillwholesale.com/rorieltosmye.html

CSharp That is the same site I got my statistics from - and it indicates "Smooth yellow synthetic handles". Unless they are totally mistaken, which could be possible.

Thanks for the review. You saved me from purchasing the Frost knife. I'll go with Rough Rider for the toenail purchase. I will say that I do own a few Frost knives (Steel Warrior line) and one could do a lot worse...they are pretty good knives. Rough Rider is the go-to for me if I don't want to spring for the extra cash for a Case XX.

22Jewel Slim You're welcome - and the RR will not disappoint. :-)

Giving a kid a knife as difficult to open as that Frost is would probably turn them off traditional slip joint knives for life.

CSharp I agree - decided not giving this one to anyone and take it as a loss.

That's smooth white bone not yellow synthetic. 100% guaranteed they just sent you the wrong one probably

I Like Rough Ryder , But Frist Cutlery has step up their game. Could compete with rough Ryder & Even Case Brand. Yeah sound like far Fetch. But I've seen them checkout Frost Cutlery Painted Pony.

That is White Smooth Bone. On the side of the box, where you said "nothing much here", is the Model number. #139. Smokey Mountain Knife Works owns Rough Rider. Their catalog has the correct info. Go to www.smkw.com/rough-ryder-white-smooth-bone-elephant-toe Also since they design the knives (here in the U.S.) they know the frame names...it's not a Sunfish, Mr. Steve Huffman.

There are several companies that manufacture this pattern for under $150.00. Queen Cutlery and Schatt and Morgan Produce this pattern and their quality will blow any Rough Rider knife out of the water.

+DT Broad I know - I think I might of mentioned that in this video (its been a while, I forget) - but there isn't anything mid-range though. Like there is $20 and then $150-$200+. How about a $60-$75 E-toenail? I wish there was a company that made those.

I won't disagree with you about the quality of Frost Cutlery but a strong spring is no indication of poor quality.
