440a fan here too. Has served me well my whole life, easy to re-sharpen, won’t rust easily.

I like the look of the green 440 more. Its my ideal knife that size stockman. My all time favourite knife is a medium stockman just cant beat it. VG10 looks very impressive cant wait for my Brother 1507 in VG10 to arrive. Have two rough riders. A carbon clip point lock back and a Black Widow Trapper. Awesome quality knifes.

Having VG10 is great, but why do they feel the need to ‘improve’ the construction? Traditional patterns, but in decent steel would be fantastic... the best of all possible worlds!

I get all that, but when there’s an open goal, they shoot and miss by a mile. The market for high-quality traditional pocketknives is growing by the moment, but the biggest complaint is always the poor quality of steel in the blades. To simply upgrade the quality of the blades, but keep it additional work and materials for the covers and the style of the construction, will be a sure fire winner!

I can only assume ... or hope ... that the powers behind the brand are looking at what sells and formulating designs around that, but surely they are watching what GEC is doing right? There is money on the table, all they gotta do is pick it up. Wouldn't take much effort to differentiate one steel from the other. Maybe the nicer knives get a special character in the tang stamp, or a special shield on the covers ..... something tasteful.

I'm going to bet the VG-10 knives are made in a different factory -- all the details of the VG-10 models are different.

I’ve still yet to pick up a Rough Rider. They seem like great knives & the fact that they’re so inexpensive is incredible! Thanks for the comparison of the steels. I always carry a Spyderco “Delica” in VG-10 & I’ve heard it’s a good steel, but I’ve never seen it tested like that. You better clean up that kitchen before your wife gets after you, Paddy!

Great video and demonstration! Thank you for all the effort in making the video. I have found over the years, you need to find and go with the steel and blade geometry that performs best for personal use and taste. I have paid and used GEC 1095, Buck 420HC and had a Spyderco in VG10. My favorite steel is still Victorinox. LOL It works for me. Wonderful we all have so many choices and now they are putting higher quality steels in RR knives. Thanks, Jeff

Nice one Paddy! A comparison of two knives that I really want. I you want to go a step further with this test, put the classic carbon stockman up against the VG10, I have both the sowbelly and large stockmen in carbon, what ever else I am carrying when I go for a walk in the country, one of those two goes with me. Good for food prep, whittling and general 'get you out of trouble'.

I think Rough Ryder missed the mark with the VG10. The blade steel is fine, but the aluminum scales went the wrong direction in my opinion. Like you said, it lacks character. If you're throwing in removable aluminum scales, why not throw on a pocket clip? Marbles has come out with a traditional Sowbelly in D2 for 17 dollars at SMKW. They only changed the blade steel. I have one coming in. If I were to get the RR VG10, I would have to make some micarta scales for it, or wood, or something more traditional looking.

I'm actually impressed with RR 440a steel, like there carbon stuff very much too. Recently picked up a vg10 mini trapper....liked it enough I just ordered a second one and will pickup a couple stockmans, thanks Paddy.

The rough rider 1824 is another beautiful knife they make that I've been eyeing. I do plan on getting one of the vg-10's too either the one you have in the video or the trapper I'm just not sure which yet. A part of me wants the three blades but the other part knows that two larger blades would serve me better. I just always preferred when the blades come out of opposite ends for some reason it just gives it a better overall look to me.

vg10 is far more enticing to me, I do think they should have either gone all traditional or actually modern, sort of like the brother knife, that said, it's nice enough as is, just not something I'd go for, albeit far more attractive than the 440a

Very good video Paddy. I did expect the VG10 to do better than the 440A and it did. I have the whole set of the RR Micarta series and like them all. I think I will also get the 2 VG10 knives. I really like the Rough Ryder knives. I have 1 GEC the Bull Buster have been looking for a Bullnose to complete that set. I want to eventually get a Proper as my expensive grail if you like. Thanks for the comparison you had to work for this cup o tea.

I wish that rough rider would just use 440C and charge $5 extra on every model. They'd kill the traditional market and would be competing with Boker and Case, and probably winning.

I think that VG10 one is designed for young people. It looks like a wetsuit or a streamlined motorcycle. It doesn't look at all like a granddad knife. I think it might convince some of the spiderco kids to consider a traditional pattern like a stockman.
